View Full Version : Thoughts on Modest Mouse?

I've always casually-liked Modest Mouse - heard some of their albums, collected some free MP3s - but the first thing I've owned by them is their new one, "Good News for People Who Like Bad News." So far, I'm not a huge fan of the album, but I do think it's an interesting mix of funky, Talking Heads-style rock tracks with dark folk ballads. On the negative side, the vocals can grate on some tracks, but they definitely give the group an even more unique sound.

I still haven't made up my mind about this record or the band, and I don't know many people at all that are into them. So I'm just curious to hear what some other Modest Mouse/rock-in-general fans think of the group and their new album.

the new album is much worse than anything they've ever done

and of course, it'll be the album that becomes the most popular and newcomers to the band will base their opinions around that album.

sorta kinda slightly over-rated... in indie circles

Modest Mouse is great.

My twelve yr old brother loves them too. It's funny seeing him singing along.

I love Modest Mouse, but sometimes I find myself wishing their music had a more industrial tinge to it.

I used to really like them, then I kind of just forgot about them. However, I think the new album is fantastic and may be the best work they've ever done. Of course, their "indie cred" will be gone very soon as it's a catchy record and getting radio play (and I believe used in a Target commercial).

Ever time I read an interview (2 so far) with that lispy fuck of a singer they have, I hate them more. That shitbag never talks about guitars, or songs or anything. He just bitches about how he was poor and how he needs money so he sells his songs to minivan commercials.

A friend of mine has some rant he made about "Freebird" at a concert. Stupidest thing I ever heard.

I was thinking that this was a photoshop until I actually went to the site and saw it. Goddamn.

And yes, I like Modest Mouse. The new album's good, but not as good as their other stuff. And fucking The Ocean Breathes Salty is the best.

they lost their "indie cred" 4 years ago when they signed to Sony, but i don't think people payed much attention because Moon and Antarctica was still pretty good.

their new album is definitely the worst work they've ever done, since before their first album at least, but it's ok. it has some moments.

Their song, "Float on," sounds like U2 off the Joshua tree album.

Dude I know, Isaac Brock sounds like a total Bono rip-off, and the new drummer could very well be Larry Mullen!!
Hell, I bet the new guitarist is the Edge in disguise.
