On a standard tv signal (not talking about dvd's) widescreen has less vertical resolution (480 for your ntsc less black lines) so black bars occupie image too, being horizontal resolution the same (only depends on signal quality as it isn't quantitised as dots or pixels). Oh, talking digital ...sometimes 4:3 resolution is the same as 16:9, being pixels rendered more square due to different aspect ratio, by this way, most times 4:3 is has relatively more detail than 16:9 :p.

I'd say, shn is to mp3 as flava is to... nevermind.

DVD to VHS

FLAC to Ogg Vorbis!! That totally works, except it's too obvious.

DVD to VHS doesn't work because VHS is analogue while DVD is digital, and both SHN and MP3 are digital. MP3 is an approximation of WAV, while SHN is a compressed version. DVD is an approximation to film, and VHS is, well, like a shitty analogue copy.

Yes, I'm thinking way too much about this. But I just got accepted to UC Santa Cruz's computer engineering PhD program, so I'm too stoked to care how I waste my time.

Nuh-uh, because FLAC is essentially the same as SHN but Vorbis is leaps and bounds over MP3

The funny of this, is that most of the people who read it never used an hi-fi deck to record and real high grade MC's (shielded case, type iv bla bla) nor imagine how good can a k7 sound on a proper system. Even the old metal maxima and metal xr's you could find in any store sound awesome on a good deck and way better than a cdr-a recorder.
On a side note, you can use jpg without media compression as some mp3 codecs too.
