Springsteen and Hendrix for sure. I bet James Chance is, too, but I haven't heard any live stuff and I'm not even sure if any exists. Maybe I should look into that box set, eh?

I love Nirvana more than almost anyone here, but I have to disagree. I have heard MANY bootlegs. They were very hit and miss live. It all depended on the mood Kurt was in. They also had shit loads of fuck ups and whatnot. I guess that was part of their charm. Though I still think there are a lot of other bands that could take their place. Pearl Jam are AMAZING live. Bruce, The Stones and so on.

seriously, not only they're the first on that list, but they don't even have true competitors
What I tell everyone and I will always: go see them live, you'll burst
this is also valid if you hate the album or whatever.
they are too much
you told me about the Beatles, let's put it like this:
- there will never be a studio band as great as the Beatles, no way
- there will never be a live band as great as the Mars Volta, no way

don't make me laugh. The mars volta is not the greatest live band ever. Their stage presence and attitude is terrible (too good for an encore), so their crowd interaction. They're quite energetic, but so are the datsuns. Their socalled jams are way too long, utterly boring and uninspired, coming back on the same guitar effect every time again and again. They have a good drummer, an awesome bassplayer who gives quite the uncalled for 5 minute solos, and a worthless piece of shit guitar player (yes, i know who he is). It's a nice and overall excellent concert experience, don't get me wrong.
Luckely they grew as compared to their early days. I saw them in march 2002, and they sucked ass. I even liked the apes, who were headlining together with tmv for les savy fav, more than tmv then.
Again don't get me wrong, i quite enjojy tmv, but this claim of yours is ridiculous.

don't make me cry. they are.
there is nothing as insanely devastating and beautiful as them, and dunno about you, but I've seen quite _many_ gigs.
You too admit that they've grown and they are now great live, right ?
well, betray your poses a little more and you'll reach to understand that they're far greater than that.
Let's put it this other way, if it makes it easier: no one is better than them, live
Nothing/everything

i've seen quite many gigs as well, didn't count them all, but i visit the local club (where i saw tmv twice) at least three times a month.
for me, a measure of how good a show is:
1. For if i know an album/albums: do i get excited by certain songs, does the band live up to my high expectations because of the album, do live versions sound better than album versions etc etc you catch my drift.
2. For unknown stuff: can the band keep me interested all the way through
For the mars volta: i knew deloused quite well, of course i didn't knew the istrumental and jam bits. The stuff i recognised i enjoyed quite well, the other stuff bored me to death, see previous reply for some things that struck me.
Another example: Madrugada. I knew their cds by heart, enjoyed them thoroughly. Their live show was such a made up, play the same set every night piece of crap, that i'm not really listening to them anymore.
Last example: Pedro the Lion. Knew nothing about the guy, knew the name. Awesome liveshow, shivers down my spine, in my opinion the show stopped way too soon.

in no order.
-Pink Floyd/Roger Waters
-Led Zeppelin
-Eric Clapton/Cream
-Les Claypool's Frog Brigade(i'm hoping one of these days to see Primus, since i sadly missed the november Aragon show :( )
-Jimmy Hendrix Experience
-Pearl Jam
-Murder by Death
-Smashing Pumpkins(geesh, how could i almost forget putting them in?)
i guess reluctantly, i'll throw Kill Hannah in, too, since i've had so many great memories seeing them in concert(after all, they were the FIRST ever indie band i liked in my life, and i've grown so much to like many more indie bands, since then).

waters is a bit of a snooze-fest.
it was a decent show, but i wouldn't say there's any way it could be in the top 10 ever.
i saw 5 shows over two tours and have heard recordings of other tours. it's ok, but if you see more than a show, it starts to get a little boring.. especially considering he never varies his set really.

True, but is a bootleg truly an exact representation of a live concert? Especially if it's one of the "Top 10 Live Bands In History"? If you are one of the aforementioned, I'd think your performances would go beyond a bootleg, you know?
Example: One of the best shows I've ever seen was The Flaming Lips on the very last show on the Soft Bulletin Tour... It was fucking magical--at least in my mind, ayways. But that's what it's about, the real-live, in person connection of the artist and the audience. A bootleg cannot capture that. When I listen back to the bootleg of the show, it's not the same...
I'm sorry but I saw the Mars Volta twice a few months ago and didn't think they were that good, their shows got kind of boring at times. At the Drive-In were much better, though I wouldn't call them the best live act ever. I agree with Sawdust Restaraunts, I've heard and seen a lot of Jimi Hendrix bootlegs and not one of them has been anything less than amazing.

hmmm, i watched part of that recent Roger Waters DVD myself(since my dad bought it). i mean, even if often he doesn't vary his sets very much in concert, i still gotta admit that his performance of Dogs was VERY MINDBLOWINGLY great(Dogs is still to this day, one of my all-time favorite Pink Floyd songs).

Flaming Lips put on an amazing live show, maybe not in the 10 ten of all time, but of recent years.
No one has mentioned Robert Randolph and the Family Band. Has anyone seen them? Fuckin incredible. Stuff off the albums was great, covers were well done, stuff I hadn't heard was very exciting. Whole room of people dancing and just losing themselves in the music. He's gotta be in the top 10!

How about the Velvet Underground and/or the Sex Pistols (w/ Matlock, not Vicious)? I'm way to young to have seen either of them, but their gigs have been cited by dozens of other musicians as the reason they formed their own bands. I'd think if your live show inspired that many people, it must have been pretty damn good.
