Pick one, and only one album that defines your musical tastes across the spectrum, the album that you constantly drill into other people's heads as being "The Best Album Ever!". The one you made all of your close friends go out and buy.

There is no album that defines my taste across the spectrum cuz I listen to rap, classic country, classic rock, 90s alternative, new wave, and indie rock, but based on the "album you make your friends get" criteria, it's most definetly:

Chutes Too Narrow just didn't have anything that stood out like New Slang, Caring is Creepy, Know Your Onion, One by One All Day, or Pressed in a Book to me.

do you have the Know Your Onion single? My Seventh Rib is my favorite song by them actually, for some reason.

anyway, if i were to contribute to the thread, it would be:

I think that "Saint Simon" and "Gone For Good" are better than anything off the first album, even "New Slang", but I hope you don't misunderstand me--I think the first album is a good piece of work, too. I don't have that single, would you say it's worth picking up?

My Seventh Rib & Esphangum Esplanade are both golden.
My Seventh Rib is probably in my top 3 Shins songs. I had even put it on a mix cd for a certain netphorian.
I was hoping to hear My Seventh Rib live and they played it both times I've seen them.

so is some kind of process of elimination involved for this "definitive" list?

i'll agree that it the songs don't have the same kick as they used to, but i love what they did with New Heart for Xmas. and the two newer songs (race the dream, is there anyone here alive) aren't bad, really. in fact, the latter is my brother's favorite.

anyway, i've probably recommended the soft bulletin more than any other album, and since that's already been posted i'll just say that i've got about six people to buy take me to your leader this year and about four people to buy that jenny toomey record last year. neither are must-own, but those are my recent success stories.
