U2 at Slane Castle 2001
The two concerts at Slane Castle near Dublin were certainly among the highlights of the 2001 Elevation Tour. In August 1981 U2 had performed for the first time at Slane Castle - as opening act for irish band Thin Lizzy. 20 years later they returned to this location during their Elevation Tour and played two shows within one week. Except the concerts in Berlin and Turino these were the only open air events on the entire tour. 80 000 tickets per each Slane Castle show had been sold out within minutes.
The first concert on August 25th 2001 (setlist) occurred just one day after the funeral of Bono's dad. Supporting acts amongst others were Coldplay and Red Hot Chili Peppers. Playing a cover version of Thin Lizzys 'Dancing In The Moonlight' U2 were evocative of their first appearance at Slane Castle. They also performed 'A Sort Of Homecoming' for the first time in several years. The second show on September 1st 2001 (setlist) was professionally recorded. Production company Dreamchaser collaborated with SpinCam enterprises who shot exceptional pictures like 360° views ( Picture 1, Picture 2 ). Nelly Furtado, Moby, Ash and more also provided top-class support acts on this evening.
Much more information is to be found in our U2 Tour Special and in our U2 Elevation Tour Special.
The TV Special: U2's Beautiful Day - Live from Slane Castle, Ireland
After professionally recording the second Slane Castle Concert on September 1st 2001 rumours were afloat for which purpose this material might be used. In fall/winter 2002/2003 the recordings were used for the first time. TV-Specials named U2's Beautiful Day - Live from Slane Castle, Ireland were broadcasted in various countries around the world and showed a 50 minutes long recording of the concert. The different transmissions *******d the following songs in several variations: Elevation, Beautiful Day, Stuck In A Moment You Can't Get Out Of, Angel Of Harlem, Out Of Control, Sunday Bloody Sunday, Where The Streets Have No Name, Pride (In The Name Of Love), One and Walk On. Furthermore the TV-Special covered an intro including information on concert and ticket-sale as well as short backstage scenes.
The online petition: 'Release Slane Castle on CD/DVD'
There was enthusiasm about the TV broadcast of clippings from the second Slane Castle Show but on the other hand it evoked disappointement because this concert could not be aquired completely on CD/DVD. Therefore the fan sites U2tour.de, U2achtung.com, U2place.com and U2star.com pleaded for a release and started an online petition. Already a few weeks later several thousands of fans throughout the world signed the petition. We'd like to thank you a lot for your commitment and support! Finally on February 26th 2003 the petition was consigned to Universal, Vienna.
More details on the online petition are to be found in this Special.
