View Full Version : Netphorians Top Ten Non-Pumpkins Albums of the 1990s

this should be interesting. you might remember i did an all time poll back in august but it got unseemingly pumpkins clogged so i'm hoping a slightly narrower focus may prove more revealing. you can list your ten in order of preference or in no order whatsoever - BUT PLEASE MAKE IT CLEAR WHICH so i can total up the points right.

I'm guessing OK Computer will win but I look forward to being proved wrong.

1. Radiohead - Kid A
2. Radiohead - The Bends
3. Tool - Ænema
4. Fugees - The Score
5. Metallica - the Black Album
6. John Hiatt - Walk On
7. Radiohead - OK Computer
8. Nirvana - Nevermind
9. Rage Against the Machine
10. Green Day - Dookie

HM: Luscious Jackson - Fever In, Fever Out; Outkast - Aquemini; Sepultura - Roots; The Roots - Do You Want More?; Pearl Jam - Ten; Pearl Jam - Versus; Tom Waits - Mule Variatons; Leonard Cohen - The Future; John Hiatt - Perfectly Good Guitar; Pantera - Great Southern Trendkill; Ben Folds Five - Whatever and Ever Amen; Weezer - the Blue Album; Beck - Odelay!; Public Enemy - Fear of a Black Planet; Dr. Dre - the Chronic.

Some notes: Not much variety on this list, since Radiohead occupies three of the top five spots. 1-3 were pretty easy choices, 4-9 were a little harder, especially to rank, and I'd probably have a different order an hour from now, but I'm satisfied with the picks. I have a feeling ranking the Black Album ahead of OK Computer and Nevermind will ruffle some feathers. 10 was a sentimental choice: it was the album that got me off of popular R&B and into rock and roll. One more note, I'm not including the Buena Vista Social Club it would sit at #2, but I think it kind of breaks the scale since it's far better than everything else on the list except Kid A. Besides, it's not rock music.

I hate those topics because I always reconsider my choices later and regret choosing a title instead of another one. I'll give it a shot on albums that remain memorable in my mind:

- Radiohead "Ok Computer"
- Faith No More "Angel Dust"
- Slint "Spiderland"
- Queens Of The Stone Age S/T
- Oasis "Definitely Maybe"
- Mr. Bungle "Disco Volante"
- Nirvana "Nevermind"
- The Verve "Urban Hymns"
- The Cardigans "First Band On The Moon"
- The Flaming Lips "Soft Bulletin"

Albums from the 90s that I have probably listened to the most...

(In No Order)

U2 - Achtung Baby
Tool - Aenima
Depeche Mode - Violator
Tori Amos - Under the Pink
NIN - Downward Spiral / The Fragile (Tie)
Cure - Wish
Metallica - Black Album
Tom Petty - Wildflowers
James - Laid
Toad the Wet Sprocket - Dulcinea

There are many other albums that may be better from an artistic point of view, but for the most part I can put in any of these albums at any time and enjoy it the whole way through no matter what kind of mood I am in. In the end, I think that's what makes an album great. I mean, MBV-Loveless is a great record, but how often do YOU really listen to it? I MIGHT listen to it 2-3 times a year, if that. I guess that means I'm 2MA1N5TR3AM4U.
There re about 10-15 other albums that might have made it in my top ten any other day, but today, this is what came out of my brain. Sorry REM, Nirvana,Radiohead,RATM,Pearljam,Sonic Youth,RHCP,Alice In Chains,Soundgarden, etc. No soup for you!
