i've heard that he duct taped a big muff to his guitar before. (siamese dream rhythm= strat-big muff-1984 marshall jcm800 head, lead uses a marshall jmp1 preamp i think). as for the quiet solo, the cabinets were in the studio, but the head was with billy in the control room, and he stood around a foot away from it (making for really easy feedback), he uses a univox wah pedal, and being so close to the head would make it feed back easily, and the pitch of the feedback could be controlled by the sweep of the wah pedal, so the high sqealing noises are caused by different positions of the wah pedal. i usually just play the high parts as pinch harmonics though.

umm, bieng close to the head has little to do with feedback ... it's all about speakers

I seem to remember the adverts for the EH Small Stone saying that 'Smashing Pumpkins relied on the Small Stone so much, they taped it to their guitars' or some crap

But then again, they did originally market the Big Muff as a 'distortion-free sustainer'

i'm 100% certain that in an old guitar world article (96/97?) james had a pedal taped to his Flying V, i think it may have been a big muff. not much compared to me putting a DD-3 inside my guitar, so the signal from the neck pickup runs thru it though...

I found out that he used his Alesis 3630 before his JMP-1.
