gosh this sucks. they didn't break up but they might as well
so, due to a friend who works for some music zine, i had the opportunity to hear belle and sebastian's new album ("dear catastrophe waitress") today.
it was absolutely fucking awful. and this is coming from the biggest b+s fanboy on this board. it was TERRIBLE. and, my expectations of stevie taking over the band haven't even come true! most of the songs are stuart-sung, and they still REALLY SUCK
i'll do a track-by-track runthrough:
Step Into My Office, Baby: as opposed to the peel session version, this is mostly sung by stuart. stupid lyrics.
Dear Catastrophe Waitressnothing special about this. and it's the TITLE track. ehh
If She Wants Me/"Roy Walker"/"(I Believe In) Travellin' Light" none of these even stood out. one is a stevie song. forgettable ********** music
"Asleep on a Sunbeam": decent but inferior to the peel sessions version. overproduced and too cutesy, and not in that normally acceptable b+s-cutesy kind of way
"Piazza, New York Catcher"the ONLY great song on this album. soley stuart and his acoustic. very pretty
"You Don't Send Me":don't remember anything about this either
"Wrapped Up in Books": i had high hopes for this track, as it apparently was supposed to be a "classic" b+s song. wrong. forgettable. sounds like someone pretending to be stuart singing it.
"Lord Anthony": a live favorite dating back to 1997. during stuart's hot streak! fantastic song! played live but never recorded until now. i really didn't see any way they could have ruined this song, but the band somehow did.
"If Find Yourself Caught in Love"this was my favorite of all of the peel sessions songs they did about a year and a half ago. despite the fact that it has great lyrics and is very catchy, they managed to fuck it up. ehhh
"I'm a Cuckoo": another i can't remember
Stay Loose: okay, this song sounds like elvis costello and the police. except b+s just CAN'T pull it off. it's them doing new wave and ultimately embarrassing themselves. stuart doesn't even sing like his normal self at all.
this isn't belle and sebastian progressing. it's not them exploring new territory. it's my favorite band crashing like a plane into a mountain.
:(
