gosh this sucks. they didn't break up but they might as well

so, due to a friend who works for some music zine, i had the opportunity to hear belle and sebastian's new album ("dear catastrophe waitress") today.

it was absolutely fucking awful. and this is coming from the biggest b+s fanboy on this board. it was TERRIBLE. and, my expectations of stevie taking over the band haven't even come true! most of the songs are stuart-sung, and they still REALLY SUCK

i'll do a track-by-track runthrough:

Step Into My Office, Baby: as opposed to the peel session version, this is mostly sung by stuart. stupid lyrics.
Dear Catastrophe Waitressnothing special about this. and it's the TITLE track. ehh
If She Wants Me/"Roy Walker"/"(I Believe In) Travellin' Light" none of these even stood out. one is a stevie song. forgettable ********** music
"Asleep on a Sunbeam": decent but inferior to the peel sessions version. overproduced and too cutesy, and not in that normally acceptable b+s-cutesy kind of way
"Piazza, New York Catcher"the ONLY great song on this album. soley stuart and his acoustic. very pretty
"You Don't Send Me":don't remember anything about this either
"Wrapped Up in Books": i had high hopes for this track, as it apparently was supposed to be a "classic" b+s song. wrong. forgettable. sounds like someone pretending to be stuart singing it.
"Lord Anthony": a live favorite dating back to 1997. during stuart's hot streak! fantastic song! played live but never recorded until now. i really didn't see any way they could have ruined this song, but the band somehow did.
"If Find Yourself Caught in Love"this was my favorite of all of the peel sessions songs they did about a year and a half ago. despite the fact that it has great lyrics and is very catchy, they managed to fuck it up. ehhh
"I'm a Cuckoo": another i can't remember
Stay Loose: okay, this song sounds like elvis costello and the police. except b+s just CAN'T pull it off. it's them doing new wave and ultimately embarrassing themselves. stuart doesn't even sing like his normal self at all.

this isn't belle and sebastian progressing. it's not them exploring new territory. it's my favorite band crashing like a plane into a mountain.

i was really anticipating this. too bad. I really hope the memory of the songs how they were live influenced your opinion, and they turn out somewhat less worse than described, but i'm afraid that this album is going to suck ass then.

1995-1998 hey

there have been some great singles released since then

and great individual tracks! perhaps 98-2003 was the band wheezing like a dying old man, but at least they had a bit of life in them!

i kind of suspected the new album to be like this, but i'm still going to give it a chance when it comes out.

2003 sure has been full of disapointments from good artists. save pig lib and mt. eerie.

Maybe they can hide a bad album with some sort of bullshit about being a 'cartoon' band and have some sort of 'Mystery' thing that the fanboys can get into...

Oh wait. It's been done.

I had this dream once that they were horrible and then I woke up and remembered that they were horrible.

LOL.

there were some really beautiful songs on tbwtas which only emphasized the mediocrity of the album as a whole. fold your hands child was just wtf. i can appreciate a handful of postmortem songs but all in all allowing stevie and isobel anywhere near a microphone sounded the death knell for me.

I'm just going to assume that you don't know what you're talking about, wait to hear the album and decide for myself.

My purist mentality is that I prefer their good songs to their new mediocre ones.

Anway, P. Stein has already retracted this opinion. He likes the album now.

I hope it is good, as I will be purchasing it upon its release.

The new b & s gets better with each additional listening. Rest assured it's a very fine album.
