View Full Version : name a few bands that fellow netphorians have gotten you into

08-12-2003, 06:52 PM
yeeha james iha mentioned loving creedence clearwater revival's 'have you ever seen the rain?'. i loved it, downloaded more, and soon bought their greatest hits.

rp has gotten me into a ton of music just by having his soulseek file up (aesop rock, aisler's set, broken social scene, his name is alive deerhoof, etc)

yeah, that's all i can think of right now.

I'd say Irrelevant and mention a SHITLOAD of bands. But he never really got me into individual bands.

What he does is he'll turn me onto a genre and play an album or two by the most important band from it (say Entertainment and Closer from post-punk).

Before him, I was just boring indie rock, garage, some electronica, and RadioheadRadioheadRadiohead.

I've gotten into:

Godspeed/Silver Mt Zion/etc etc
Sigur Ros
Black Heart Procession

I've bought, but haven't gotten into for various reasons:

Trail of Dead
Mars Volta

and I've downloaded tons of shit that for whatever reason (shitty, not listened to enough yet to buy, etc.) I haven't picked up in the stores. All from general discussion of said bands, not due to one particualr persons recommendation.

Undone recommended Fennesz.

Peabody boasted about Bjork until I got around to buying Homogenic.

That's about all I can think of.

deviousj suggested that i check out gybe and sigur ros.

modest mouse and mogwai i checked out - well, i guess because i'd seen them mentioned by other netphorians whose tastes in music i could relate to or respect.

Oh yeah, I got quite several things from Ryan Patrick. (but not sean casey)

Oh, BELLE AND SEBASTIAN. I totally owe that to Suze. She got me into Bach and Chopin and Bob Dylan and Jacques Brel. I love her.

Uh, a bunch of stuff has been a combination of here and Pitchfork. Dismemberment Plan, Flaming Lips, Sigur Ros, Fugazi, Magnetic Fields, My Bloody Valentine, New Pornographers, Yo La Tengo, Modest Mouse... not really from anyone specific, but just the ones that seem to pop up the most. And uh, whoever compiled the list of np's that they liked who put Oblivious from Galaxie 500 down got me into them. And Eulogy may have gotten me into Fiona Apple since I really liked the two songs he recommended and have since checked out her second album, which is actually quite good, and I may get soon.

I've been exposed to a lot of bands through this board, but the two bands I will always associate with certain Netphorians...

Modest Mouse - Ghostchild
Mogwai - noyen

I will forever love both of you for that.

And, I think it was failure who kept on about Supergrass, but now I love them. I can't even remember who it was who brought them to my attention, but thank you. And the guy who introduced me to Grandaddy. You rock, sir.

far too many...

I got into Radiohead because of this board, I noticed lots of people liked the band and I asked what cd to get and I ended up with the bends. First time I heard Kid A I was "wow, the Pumpkins really suck!"

Vincent got me into Modest Mouse, Death Cab for Cutie, and he sent me a Jim O'Rourke mp3 that I liked. I also got a Black Heart Procession mp3 from Vincent via jenniferkate. It was neat.

I was into Manic Street Preachers for a little while because of this board, but I think they're a little too silly for me to take seriously as communists. The last part of their career since the lead singer died is pretty awful. That disco dancer song is painful.

I bought Quality Control by J5 partly because of buzz on this board, but mostly because a couple of my friends liked it, and also because I downloaded like 7 mp3s by them and liked every last one of them. That almost never happens.

I downloaded Sleater-Kinney because of buzz on this board a year or so ago. I eventually bought All Hands on the Bad One.

I think that's about it, I think most of you are scenesters.

I did DL a few MSP songs on the basis of recommendations here. Their cover of "suicide is painless" is very cool, and I like "a design for life".

08-13-2003, 07:06 PM
Tessellation got me into Wang Chung.

08-14-2003, 02:08 AM
Graveflower has been the most helpful in getting me into most of it, either by sending me mp3's or by just mentioning it:

Jim O'Rourke
Xiu Xiu
Aphex Twin
Dr. Octagon

Otherwise, some bands that general discussion on this board has got me into *******:

Dream Theatre

That's all that I can think of, although I'm sure there's probably more...

08-14-2003, 03:31 PM
modest mouse
dismemberment plan

08-14-2003, 04:07 PM
Seeing threads about lateralus when it came out. I bout the album blindly without even knowing of the band. Instant fan.

08-16-2003, 03:08 AM
COIL- jenniferkate :)

08-16-2003, 03:28 AM
jenniferkate and joel deserve much recognition as of late!
