Bullet With Butterfly Wings

Seriously. It gets no props around here. There’s a reason it was one of their biggest hits, you know.

There’s a reason it was one of their biggest hits, you know. one time in 6th grade, i listened to that song on repeat for about 3 hours. it drove my parents nuts, and it drove me nuts eventually too. it sounds like fridge buzz to me now. i think in recording and producing that song (and even making the video), billy said 'i'm going to compromise my integrity to make the smashing pumpkins a household name' and he did a pretty good job of it.

I think they are equally great, but I can't say that drown is underrated....at least here.

I agree with what you said about the video. It’s a standard MTV stuff. Rocking with crowd, chaos at the end, etc. etc.

I think the song is just done really damn well, and it wasn’t a deliberate “commercial” attempt. It has a darker vibe than what you hear on SD, but it fits with MCIS stuff. Think Jellybelly, Fuck You, Here is No Why and Bullet stays totally in that vien.

I do agree that it does have a tendency to become fridge-magnet noize after awhile. However, I found if you stay off listening to it on the album for awhile then just pop it back on after a long wait you can appreciate how much goes into it. Jimmy’s drumming is top notch, the riff is one that sticks in your brain and James’ guitar wankery is at its finest. And a lyric like “despite all my rage I am still just a rat in a cage” really clicks with angsty teenagers. To this day, it is still the most overplayed SP song I hear on the radio, and I switch it off once in awhile myself. But its good if you don’t let it succumb to overkill.

Through The Eyes of Ruby.... lyrical genius...

and definitely Drown. When I first got into the 'pumpkins in '93 I heard Drown on the newly-formed local alterna-rock station, and I HAD TO KNOW where it came from... After about 20 calls to the local radio station, I found out it was on the Singles movie soundtrack.... I was on my way to the record store THAT DAY :) There's no more underrated song, IMO... it's genius. It belonged in the Top 10... It never even got released as a single, yet it could have easily sealed The Smashing Pumpkins on the map way before Mellon Collie....

The local station would frequently actually play Drown in its entirety.... feedback and all!

By the way, I always attributed the feedback guitar to James... but does anyone know if that's James or if it's Billy?

To be truthful, and I am embarassed to say this, I always thought that James was the whacky guitarist... I never saw Billy play live until THIS YEAR when I saw Zwan 04.14.03 ... experience of a lifetime... and I now know that Billy is the shizzaahhh of guitar as far as I'm concerned.

window paine, annie dog, with every light, we only come out at night, and toase are album cuts that seem to get no respect. but as for demo stuff and b-sides, not worth asking, blue, mouths of babes, sparrow, and egg arent mentioned much either, and are all incredible.

Wow! Your reply contains a clear, exceptional argument in your favor. You are obviously right, and I am clearly wrong. In no way do you seem like an irrational douche bag. I will take your comments to heart. Thank you for showing me how terribly wrong I am, and how life as I know it is forever changed.

yeah that song's got a lot of haters around here, but i fucking love it. overwrought, overly-emotional and overly-wordy b0lly in one of his finest moments.
