i don't agree.. 4, 8 and 9 definitely belong above 10.
If anything, 10 is overrated in that list.

Frankly I still don't understand how any fan of square rpgs can appreciate that frustrating mess of a game, except that he must be swayed by the superficialities; namely the graphics and speech. The main component of square rpg gameplay has always been rooted in the battle engine. I don't care how many times you swap lulu for wakka, or use auron to kill that stupid shelled creature, that shit ain't the least bit fun.

But each to his own, I guess. http://forums.netphoria.org/wwwboard/icons/icon12.gif

I'm guessing it was because the list was compiled before the games release.. I don't think it could be the fact that it was a collaboration, as mario rpg is there. Ergheiz, Tobal and Brave Fencer don't seem to be around either..

VIII was too damned easy and the story was way too soap opera for me. Not to mention the Junction system was ridiculous. X's story, though I have my issues with Tidus' faggotry and Yuna's babyism, was mostly top-notch, and as far as the battle system goes, I think it was a nice change of pace from the same old same old. Plus, I enjoyed the sphere grid and Monster Arena a great deal.

As far as IX goes...nothing about the game really stood out, IMO.

And all those other games you mentioned probably sucked.

heh, i love geeking it out with rpg discussion. here goes..

SaGa Frontier 2 - A sincere apology for SaGa Frontier.

saga frontier wasn't bad actually.. The problem was that they were a little too ambitious. The game allows you to choose one of 7 different characters in the beginning. Each with a totally different storyline.. The only problem is that they were reaching a deadline, so 3 of the characters have decent storylines and the rest are terrible..

But anyway, why 8 and 9 are good:

8) Having played through this game again recently, I have a new appreciation for it. The story is probably the most complicated so far, with the exception of FFX, but it's diverse.. the story shifts from focusing on seed missions to assassinating the sorceress, to finding out about laguna.. FFX on the other hand was such a linear story, jumping from one monotonous temple to another hearing all about the 'faith' and 'sin'..
FF8 does have it's low moments.. such as finding out that everyone went to the same orphanage, etc. The draw system wasn't great either, butI found that the junctioning system was a good way to customise the strength of your attack and defence abilities in relation to both element and status effects..

on a whole, 8 isn't great.. but it's better than 10.

9) one of the criticisms of FF7 was that even though it allowed you to customise your characters via materia, the characters were essentially clones of one another, not really possessing any real individual abilities.. FF9 is a step back to games like FF4 where you have characters that specialise in an type of class, while still allowing customisation in the way of weapon junctioning, and allotting level gems to certain enhancements.
The difficulty level in this game is great. Gone are the limit breaks in exchange for ‘trances’, which are not excessively powerful and permit more human interaction. Furthermore, quite often the more characters in your party, the better. The gameplay in this game is top notch.. it's just a shame that the story and ending weren't that great.

vagrant story is WAY under-rated. i've actually started playing this again. there is so much you can possibly do in this game. the game isn't meant to be played through once and then thrown away. of course, when i s tarted playing again, my girlfriend decided she wanted to start back up too, thus limiting the amount i can play it, even though i was the one that wanted to start playing it again. she's on her 4th time through now and still has a LOT of titles left to get.

final fantasy tactics is MUCH better than FF8. ff8 had an annoying story, good graphics for the time, a horrible magic system. FF8 is where the game became pretty reliant on guardian forces and summonings, which to me is basically an equivalent of a fighting game being centered around only doing special moves/combos. i thought the seed ranking thing was horrible. the characters were totally forgetable. there were also things that they put in to try to make it hard but it ended up just making the game incredibly tedious. i can't think of anything i actually liked about FF8. FFT has a good difficulty level where the stuff is the same level as you, able to posess the same skills as you... even at higher levels i sometimes have fights where i end up dying because it's pretty unpredictable. FFT was a little shorter than i would haved liked it to have been... and it didn't necessarily NEED to have cloud in it. but then again, they felt the need to stick FF chars in a disney-based game.. i dont know if i can forgive them for that. FFT is a game i need to get back to playing because i want to totally complete the game at some point.

i don't know if i'd put 6 at the top.
the fact that you can have everyone learn every spell and economizers are relatively easy to get (thus making all magic 1 mp) makes the game so ridiculously easy. everyone has different skills, but there are characters that are rather worthless/annoying... but when you can cast ultima for 1 MP...
or maybe i'm the only one that got almost everyone to 90+ and had them learn every spell and had almost every rage and most of the lores? definitely a fun game, but the best square game ever? i think not.

"015: Final Fantasy - Your father’s Dungeons & Dragons combined with your little brother’s Lego."
what age group are they targetting with this description? d&d and legos were both pretty big when i was a kid, so how old are the kids of parents who played d&d all the time?

020: Final Fantasy III - A punishing ordeal as one of the most demanding installments of the series.
most demanding? how the fuck would i know? maybe they should RELEASE IT HERE.

i also think it's ridiculous that square does all sorts of merchandising for the games in japan, yet the US gets practically NOTHING comparatively (no, i can't say i was particularly interested in spending hundreds of dollars on squall's leather outfit, but...)... and digicube and such won't take orders outside of japan..

re: saga frontier -- i bought this game and i totally hated it. it was way too open-ended. just picking up the game i didn't really know which characters were supposed to do what. i dont' think i'll ever even attempt to play it again as it was not interesting at all (on top of that).. i just view it as a total waste of money... and saga frontier is reason enough for me to not even think of buying saga frontier 2.

i wholeheartedly agree concerning tactics and vagrant story. They're two of my favourite games. I'm looking forward to seeing what they do with tactics advanced.. But i wish they'd make a sequel to Vagrant Story; I think the story could easily continue..

FF6, well the economisers make the game easy, but only if you know where to look (the forest with the bracheosaur), otherwise the difficult level is fine. In that game Skills like the Blitz and the Swordtech made battles much more engaging than others in the series.

As for FF3, you can play the unofficially translated version on a NES emulator.. I've only played the intro to it though.

And with SaGa frontier, I'd recommend at least giving the game another chance with either Red (the guy with the blue hair :erm) or the girl with the green hair (who's a semi-ripoff of Terra.)

I don’t think legend of mana should be in that list.. instead they should stick in chocobo racing! http://forums.netphoria.org/wwwboard/icons/icon6.gif

I miss video games.

yeah. a vagrant story sequel would be great... especially if the game itself was a little longer too. my girlfriend did the no saves/fast time titles yesterday and went through it in 3 hours.
then again, that's with an ultimate damascus weapon too, so..

yeah. i definitely used the skills more than i did in other games. i will give it that.. i didn't necessarily "know" where the economisers were.. i just happened to find them.. i was looking for good xp and MP (or whatever they were called) so i could get people's levels/spells up and found that fighting the tyranosaurs was the best thing to do.. occasionally i'd hit a brachosaur and then i started getting economizers..

i would probably wait on a real version than play it through an emulator.

there's too many other things i'd rather play/replay than saga frontier again.. i might have actually given the game away.. i'll have to look for it.

chocobo racing was such a forgetable game. there wasn't really too much special about it.

I wasn't really serious..but still..
the story, albeit short, was so likeable.. characters like mog as the sneaky rascal, and fat chocobo as the greedy pig led to some humorous moments.

other than that it's just mario kart, except you use FF magic instead of shells, etc. I dig it.

Secret of Mana should be way higher. I love everything about that game, and while a lot of it's tied to nostalgia, I wouldn't be making those connections if it weren't a fantastic game to begin with.

Agred, but I still loved FFV. It's my fourth favorite in the series. (VI, VII, IV, V). I haven't ever sat down to play any of the post-FFVII games, mostly because my brother's played them all and they look hella convoluted and boring. X made me want to kill somebody just sitting in the room with him playing it.

Tactics looks pretty cool, though. I might steal that from him before I go away to school.

OK, but FF7 was convoluted in a good way, mostly because outside of Kekfa, Sephiroth's the ultimate FF badass. 8 and 9 just made me yawn and scratch my head.

i just want to say this; i've played ff 7-10. and in my opinion 8 was the best. 9 was the worst. i just had a blast playing 8. and i loved the story. part 9 to me was just kind of uninteresting. and yeah the last boss was just retarded. where did they come up with that one?

I think it was final fantasy III (US) but I’m not sure. Anyway, it was the one where the guy is on that train for lost souls and he sees his dead wife and son on the train and then all of a sudden it pulls away and he’s running after it like “NOOOOOO!!! COME BACK!!!” but then the train pulls out.

Yeah, that was probably the saddest moment in videogame history for me.

Does anyone else change the character names in FINAL FANTASY or do you keep the names the game gives you originally? I try to name all the black guys “Lando”.
