A lot of you will dis this topic an some lame o-board crap (I probably would too normally) and I'm sure its been done before but I think some of the responses would be interesting to hear. I might be in a weird mood though.
What SP songs can you personally relate to or identify with? I don't think I've ever related to any but I guess there are a couple such as Cherry and In The Arms of Sleep. And Pennies. I'll do some more thinking on this later, I have to get to work.
I'm sure you guys have a buttload of them.
Also, describe the parts you relate to and that type of thing.
Whoopee. :erm
PS: I am not lame.

Hm. I could relate to a lot of the angry songs way back in the day when I was silly and angsty.
I think the reason that I only listen to Siamese Dream and Adore is that, besides just being beautiful albums, I can relate to the themes on both of those albums. They seem a lot more mature than Mellon Collie, TAFH, Gish, or Machina. I think. Like the theme of death and loss in Adore....anyone can relate to that. And the themes of angst and depression in Siamese Dream, which may seem immature, but they are presented in a tasteful way on that album, I think.
Who knows.

Pennies - pretty much the whole thing I can relate to. One of those songs that "came out" at the right time.
Try, Try, Try (Machina 2) - the first 2/3rds of it; "it flows down the back of this bitter son, desperate for love and loves everyone" and "at 13, i lost my compass, but i know it's all accomplished" especially
Galapagos - "tell me are you still, the man i'm supposed to be?" and then the music is just, in my opinion, the most beautiful music they ever wrote

Yeah Disarm has more.. something to it.. reality? and rat in a cage is just.. abstract or something.. not as "deep". Words are failing me atm, sorry.

That got out? Hahah I couldn't remember. I wasn't entirely satisfied with whether it "worked" as a whole. She wasn't the greatest babe but she fit well enough.
I have a Saturnine and something else in the works possibly in the near future. I thought In The Arms of Sleep and especially Mouths of Babes really worked well.
I am liking this thread. I'm going to go through the albums later and pick out some of the songs I related to in some way.

What do you see pennies as being about? I had this whole elaborate meaning worked out regarding the pennies for sale a few years ago. I'll see if I can remember it later.
Its nice to have a more mature thread going on here. A welcome change. :D

Well, the song as a whole, I thought was about a guy singing to his ex-girlfriend who he's clearly not over. He's tried to move on (I've got a new girlfriend) but he can't get over her (she looks alot like you, dear, no one could ever do, dear). There's a sort of resignation to the song like that he doesn't think he can change things anymore, but that he still feels the need to talk about it.
As for the "pennies for sale" part, I guess I always thought of the old "penny for your thoughts" saying, so I guess he's saying he has lots of thoughts about her/life-in-general, and he's not holding back, he's letting them out.

I'm probably way off but I always thought the pennies for sale part was Billy belittling Penelope (his sort of mom like figure who for awhile looked after him as a kid). . which fits the lines "and you say the fates were cruel for throwing us together". But as a whole the song to me is more about taking a jab at an exgirlfriend, I think there's a sarcastic tone to the whole song, esp in the lines "it's a pity we're apart", and "that i loved you so, especially when you'd GO AWAY and leave me here". I guess in a twisted way, that's pumpkin humour.

thats pretty cool, i never even thought of it that way. Theres still the "but I've got a new girlfriend, she looks alot like you dear" line though that contradicts that.

A couple years ago I was walking around downtown, listening to Porcelina on my CD player, and I saw this girl I liked across the street I was about to cross. We made eye contact and waved at each other. Now I always think of "a distant shoreline" as a metaphor for a street and everything...the whole song really becomes very simplified.
Yes, that was the lamest, cheesiest paragraph you've ever read.

I'm surprised that no-one has mentioned For Martha yet.
I had relative of mine who I was pretty close to die (It was in 1999, not that long after Adore was released), and a lot of the lines in that song related to the way I was feeling at the time pretty well. The lines that stood out for me were the likes of:
If you have to go don't say goodbye
Your picture out of time, left aching in my mind
:(

I always kind of related to the line in Perfect "one day we'll wave hello and wish we'd never waved goodbye" plus some of the other lines in that song. I like when they would play a really sad-sounding version of it in 98, it totally changed the meaning of the song almost.

Wah you're right. Let me think of the line from Perfect...
OK I guess its just the theme of Perfect where things are messed up but next time they will be good. And its like looking back on the past sorta like the line in This Time. I identify with that whole theme.

Yup. I can relate to this and maaaaaannny more cuts from the Siames Dream era. That album was definately the soundtrack for my life for probably 4 or 5 years. I really need to listen to it now and then I can make a better post.

So I just finished listening to Siames Dream for the first time in prolly 6 months. I cannot stronly assert enough that this is definately one of the best albums of all time, but more importantly, I don;t think there is another album that defines 90's rock like Siames Dream (yes, SD kills Nevermind and all the rest).
Here are some of the songs that appeal to me and the reasons why:
1) Cherub Rock, Quiet, Today, Hummer, Rocket - Can you imagine a better 5 track rock fest on any other album in history? I cannot count how many times I used to drive around in highschool with these five songs blasting in particluar. The urgency pschydelica of Cherub, the possibly best drumming of JC's carreer in Quiet (especially durring and following the guitar solo), the opening lick to Today and the ironic lyrics, the race car meets middle eastern intro (and the vast amount of changes within the song) of Hummer. And then there is Rocket which basically is too good to put into words. IMO the multied layerd guitar parts (which used to frustrate the hell out of me when trying to learn it on guitar) and lyrics are the best parts of the song. "I torch my soul to show the world that I am pure deep inside my heart" and more importantly "the moon is out the stars invite, think I'll leave tonight", folowed by the "I shall be free!" lines are breathtaking and define how felt alot of the time in highschool.
All of these 5 songs contain a feeling which just cannot be described (along with a few others such as Drown, Snail, etc.)
2) Mayonaise - If SD was the soundtrack for my teens to early 20's then Mayonaise was the one song that definetly spoke to me more then any other in my life then and now. I used to play this one song before going to sleep everynight. The song to me basically summed up the fact that everyone around was faking to be someone else and admittedly so was I and all for the sake of trying to be cool. I was scared to be myself as I felt I would be pursecuted. You have to love high school life :)
3) Soma - Ah yes. This song always spoke to about the girl that wants to be your friend but will/can't go the extra step to be your lover, yet she always crawls back to you. This is what I took from the song and what I related it to in my life at the time. About the girl that you like too much, and she just does not like you the same way. Heart breaking.
4) Luna - This is one song that IMO does not get enough love. It is also a far better album closer then Farewell and Goodnight IMO. This song was the song that I wanted to be "our song" for me and the girl that I was in live with (see Soma) but it was never meant to be. :(
There are so many other SP songs that I could talk about more (Obscured, Whir, Glynis, 1979,etc), but no other album has ever touched my life in the way Siamese Dream has.
