Very similar to '6 degrees of kevin bacon'. If you don't know it works, you try to link a celebrity to billy in 6 links or less. If you are confused, here is an example.

Chris Cornell
-is now in Audioslave with Tom Morello
-who went to high school with Adam Jones
-who is in Tool with Maynard Keenan
-who played in A Perfect Circle with Paz Lenchantin
-who is now in Zwan with Billy corgan.

The only rules for this version that we will play are:
-No more than 6 connections.
-playing the same festival can't be considered a link. Lollapalooza and the three Woodstocks made this too easy.
-no stupid things like "Chris Cornell who my hand, and I shook Billy's hand. That's retarded. I mean, duh.

Let me think of one to start things off.

Stevie Wonder.

Jimmy Chamberlin
-Was in a band called The Smashing Pumpkins with James Iha
-James Iha started The Smashing Pumpkins with Billy Corgan
-Billy Corgan hired D'arcy Wretzky
-D'arcy Wretzky got rich
-D'arcy used her riches to buy some crack
-Jimmy loves crack too

hmm, stevie wonder was sampled by will smith in 'wild wild west.'
will smith also sampled 'rock the casbah' in 'willenium,' which was co-written by joe strummer.
in an interview with billy corgan, he jokingly said joe strummer came to him in a dream and came up with the band name 'smashing pumpkins.'

well in the kevin bacon game you have to link actors by the movies they have appeared in together, right?

hm, i guess you'd have to have remote associations for this to work with billy.. but mere meeting or name dropping in interviews seems pretty damned remote.
I mean, I'm pretty sure that billy has mentioned Stevie Wonder in an interview before. So what is that? 1 link?

and markus, you didn't leave a name to continue the game. dig?

Yeah, I agree... the links should probably be through musical collaborations.

Stevie Wonder is a really tough one, mostly because I have zero knowledge of his music and the people he has played with. The only way I can think of doing this *******s a rather weak link (the first), but oh well:

Stevie Wonder's "I Ain't Gonna Stand For It" was covered by Eric Clapton on his "Reptile" album.
Eric Clapton had Mel Collins play on "Slowhand".
Mel Collins was in King Crimson with Robert Fripp.
Robert Fripp played with David Bowie.
David Bowie performed with Billy Corgan on his 50th birthday show.

Eh. That's the best I can do, and I had to google search to find the first two. Oh well.

Bjork? (not through the Stigmata soundtrack, though, I don't think that should count)

Bjork duetted with Thom Yorke on "I've Seen It All"
Thom Yorke sang on U.N.K.L.E's "Rabbit In Your Headlights"
U.N.K.L.E's James Lavelle remixed Garbage's "The World Is Not Enough"
Garbage's drummer, Butch Vig, produced Gish and Siamese Dream
BILLY CORGAN WAS IN THE MOTHEFUCKING SMASHING PUMPKINS

Oooh.

Frank Zappa's '77-'78 band i.ncluded Adrian Belew.
Adrian Belew played with David Bowie in the late 70s.
David Bowie, of course, performed with Billy Corgan on the former's (just for you, dishpan!) 50th birthday party!

The Bowie link is quite useful.

Jimi Hendrix!

Jimi Hendrix famously touted King Crimson as "the best band ever" or something to that effect
King Crimson = Robert Fripp
Fripp played for David Bowie
Blah blah blah 50th birthday.

Morrissey!

Courtney Love almost definitely has slept with numerous people from Roatan, Honduras.
Courtney Love slept with Corgan.

It's almost too easy.

huh...

ok, new rule, no courtney love inclusions, for the reason listed above. Similar to ******s "no festivals" rule.

uh, musical comparisons are ok, but no "slept with" connections.

Stevie Wonder:

His "You Are the Sunshine of My Life" was covered by that epochal orchestra-pop group, The Starlite Orchestra.

Said group also covered "What the World Needs Now is Love" by Burt Bacharach on their Plays Burt Bacharach album.

A group called Zwan also covered "What the World Needs Now is Love" during their formative live shows.

Billy Corgan is the lead singer for Zwan.

Flawed. The Japanese got the U.S. into WWII by bombing Pearl Harbor; though Roosevelt strongly believed the United States needed to enter the war, he couldn't convince the public until Dec. 7, 1941.

ok, but the fact remains that Roosevelt was very pro-war, in that he wanted to join the war, but isolationists wanted the US to stay out. In any case, he was the Commander in Chief of US forces during WWII, which is enough of a link.

Kim Gordon of Sonic Youth performed in Free Kitten with Bassist Mark Ibold.
Mark Ibold was a member of Pavement.
Pavement did a Mock cover of "1979" by the Smashing Pumpkins, a band fronted by
