Anyone knows if that drawing was a standard or did he do that himself? It is so flippin cool, I want to find a strat with hippie flowers.

If I'm not mistaken, I think that was the 72 strat he used to record the entirety of Gish, which was eventually stolen.

The paint job is defnitely custom.

If your asking if the 'Slunk' guitar is a standard Fender Strat it is not. As far as I know there is no color scheme like that for the Fender Strat line ;)

Now if your asking if Billy did it himself or if it was done by a professional guitar body painter then that's a different story which I don't have the answer too...in any case, the design isn't a standard Fender Strat one. It kinda reminds me of the Lull cd cover which was done by D'acry + James + Tanya (?)....just the psychadelic look/feel Billy was into back then.

to me, the colors of a fender start (esp. the sunburst) are great as is. I don't like to seem them 'personalized' with stickers & 'graffiti'...that's just me though.

btw ******, I always read his Gish Strat was a 74'

Of all of the paintjobs, I enjoy the one on <a href="http://briefcase.yahoo.com/bc/slow_dawn/vwp?.dir=/Pumpkins+Equipment&.dnm=This+one+was+used+on+Ruby+live.jpg&.src=bc&.view=l&.done=http%3a//briefcase.yahoo.com/bc/slow_dawn/lst%3f%26.dir=/Pumpkins%2bEquipment%26.src=bc%26.view=l">Billy's Stars and Stripes Strat</a> the most.

Fender's also released a new telecater with a Pink Paisly pattern on it, and it's just beautiful.

Just curious, who took all of these photos of the equipment? Was that from a guitar magazine or something?

I really think that one is worst, the red fucks it all up, like Billy stopped half way colouring cause he was sick and tired of it...

SPguitar got those pictures from some japanese magazine. If I remember it well, we've never learned what was exactly in the article, as it was written in Japanese characters...

The Slunk Strat looks as if Billy just got really bored and drugged out one day, and decided to paint a bunch or crazy shit on it using bright colors. It reminds me of those 'graffiti murals' popping up all over the place in inner city neighborhoods these days. :) It does look shiny on the Slunk video, although I painted my strat with a particular type of $.97 acrylic paint (no joke--I bought several colors, too), and it looks very good. It is a flat paint, although you can see some light reflect off of it. Under close inspection, the same actually seems to be true of Billy's psychedelic Slunk Strat. There is evidence of slight paint gradation and texture, as well as peeling. Judging from the paint peeling/wearing away, the true color of the guitar seems to be a bright red. He wrote something like "nice at nite 69" on the starry blue side of it with (probably) a black sharpie marker. Once Billy even mentioned that he re-painted his yellow "I love my mom" guitar to the silver one with bats all over it, during the MCIS era.

I thought it was Billy's red-orange (or some color like that) Strat that got stolen after Gish was recorded...the one in the picture of the "I Am One" CD single, by the little amp. But he also had a yellow one with weird green/blue flowery stuff all over it, that seemed to start to peel rather badly. Perhaps that was the one...

Hey stumpycat, do you have any picture of your guitar after you've painted it with those colors?
Could you tell me how long does it take till the painted color starts again peeling off? ( I mean on the most heavily "used' parts of the guitar)
Thanks

(p.s. cut 'n paste the above link b/c geoshities doesn't allow direct linking!)

That's what it looked like back in 2000, and the most of the paint is still there, except in certain especially vulnerable areas where the guitar gets banged about a good bit. The nicks are rather small, though, and only require an occasional touch-up. But I have even scrubbed stains off and quite surprisingly the paint did not come off with it. Alot of the paint actually gets more lustrous with wear. It's still just periwinkle blue, although I've been wanting to do that crazy paint job for ages. I just can't figure out what to paint. Plus I don't know, exactly, how to remove the blue coat that's been on there forever!
