View Full Version : Pastichio Medley Box Set

I know this has probably been done before, but since I've never seen one online and have some extra time on my hands, I'm exited to compile my own SP chronology. The box set I am to create shall hope to ******* every known Pumpkins song (teases, side and/or solo projects not *******d) in alphebetical order. I will be including all known covers performed live and various collaberaions, as well as every clip featured in the 25 min. Pastichio Medley placed where they should be in the alphebetical Pumpkins history. I have decided that to start, I will use studio versions for songs where one is available, and if no studio version exists, then the best available version shall be used (be it a demo, live performance, or whatever). If this goes easily and I have more time on my hands, I may consider a second set using all live versions. I have no idea whether or not people other than myself might find interest in hearing Smashing Pumpkins songs in a collection organized like this, but any curious or interested parties could easily obtain copies via snail mail trading.
I am posting this because although I am a huge Pumpkins collector, I do not have everything. In undertaking this compilation, I realized there are about 5 to 10 songs I don't think I have. I know some of these are from the elusive 8/10/88 show which for some odd reason, people don't seem to trade. But if anyone could help me obtain these songs, or any other random songs that spfc may not have listed, then I would appreciate it very much:
Armed to the Teeth
Holiday
Mandocello (live)
Screaming
Sunday Bloody Sunday (live - complete song or tease??)
Walking the Dog (live)

I've decided to not ******* the "Last Instrumental" for obvious reasons (it's not available and I'm waiting for the full show to come out). But any other pointers, advice, or general opinions would be great!
Thanks for your help...

-Dan.

...hmmmm...

in my posting???

oh well...
that's what I meant.

That's a pretty insane project. Good luck (not being sarcastic)!

Last Instrumental is much more widely available than Armed to the Teeth or Screaming (incidently, I'm not sure why you listed those two from 8/10/88, but not 6234 or I Fall...). There's a bootleg of the first half of the 12/2/00 show available... it's minidisc-sourced, and it's not bad. Last Instrumental was played during the second set, so it's on the bootleg.

Mandocello was released on Cheap Trick's live album "Music For Hangovers". But I'm not really sure if you should ******* side projects and covers like that... and Walking the Dog? Yeah, I definitely wouldn't ******* covers if I were you. It seems to defeat the purpose of a SP chronology... and then you face the question of whether or not you should ******* "Robo Lover" or whatever it's called (Red Red Meat song with JC on drums) and "Raped" by the Frogs (JC on drums, although I don't think he was credited). There are a million others. Side projects and covers would just get too crazy. Mandocello was just BC playing guitar at a Cheap Trick show, on a Cheap Trick song - there's nothing SP about it.

And why alphabetical? You should try chronological order. Now that would be interesting - from The Vigil to Last Instrumental... that would be perfect.

btw - as for Sunday Bloody Sunday, I'm not aware of any complete cover. I only know that it was teased on 12/12/95. spfc.org doesn't show any others. The 12/12/95 tease was coupled with a tease of the Rolling Stone's "Emotional Rescue", and it's pretty funny. But if you insist on including covers in your project, then you should really stay away from teases. Teases are meaningless, and there are way too many of them!

I once downloaded (from the NSPAA) a "Pastichio Medley breakdown" that you might be interested in. I don't think I have it anymore, but I'm sure someone does. It was all of PM, cut nicely into separate files. I can't remember if it was .mp3 or .wav. Probably mp3. You could use those for the PM riffs that you can't find elsewhere (i.e. Gravity Demos, Electric MCIS demos, etc.).

Sorry if I'm a bit incoherent, but I need sleep. If you decide to attempt chronological order, you might wanna try something like this-
http://suicidekiss.org/gish/songs/
That was my attempt at putting the 1990-1992 songs into chronological order. It's probably not perfect, but it's a start.

by the way - the word in-clude isn't allowed on here, because that word can be used in html code to screw around with the board. So the admin decided it would just be best to censor the word.

Maybe he already has them. :D

people dont trade it because they're "better" than us.
loads of people have the shows. but not trading them is what makes them speshul. let's not take that away from them.

Thanks for the info/advice. I'm very tired right now too, and kind of sick. I think 6234 and I Fall escaped my mind when typing the post, but I do need those as well.
I knew that Last Instrumental is out there, I've just decided like many others to wait until the full show comes out to hear anything from it. I'm anxious as hell....especially after seeing the 79 and Fuck You performances. But thanks for the info...
As far as teases go, I know there are way too many. Some of them are so great and long they were almost considered, but I figured, ya can't just use one or two and not ******* others...
Sunday Bloody Sunday/Emotional Rescue for some reason isn't on my copy of 12/12/95, and so I've never heard it. I remember at one point hearing someone say they were covers, so I wasn't sure. But as far as cover songs/collaborations and thing like that go, many of the covers the Pumpkins have done have been as timeless as some of their own songs (NLMD, Landslide, Godzilla, etc.) I couldn't disclude those songs, so I think I'll use most covers, definitely one's that were played multiple times, and probably not ones that were played once and there's no decent sounding recording of it. I am also aware of the amount of collaborations and side projects, which is why none of that will go on - and also because much of it isn't SP music at all.
So yeah, I'm doing alphebetical because it's going to be easy. I have attempted to decipher the chonology before, but that is a task way beyond my availability. I'm a full time college student who works, has a girlfriend, plays in a band, has a social and family life. I knew the alphebetical would be easy because I know it and I knew that with the addition of the MP box set, I had almost every single song. It shouldn't take me any time at all after getting these last few important songs.
I started by dissecting the Pastichio Medley. I separated each song into it's own 10-20 second track using Sound Forge and faded in and out the ends of each .wav file. Wasn't hard at all, only took me about 2 hours. After I completed that I knew that I could almost begin compiling the set. I was asking my girlfriend what she thought and what I should title it. She said it was basically one big Pastichio Medley, so I decided to name it that.
This is pretty much just a fun thing for me. I'm sure no one really cares, I didn't really until recently, but I'm slowing down a bit on trading lately, and thought It would be cool to have a never ending Pumpkins compilation to keep in my car for when I'm driving around. I'm also probably going to make cover art for each disc. I wonder how many it's going to be? If it's easy and fun, I may make a second or third like I said, and a chronology is something I may consider. But for now, I guess I'm making an alphebetical medley of all songs SP other than the Last Instrumental that may or may not ******* the 5 songs I'm dying to get to complete my collection. So so so...anybody out there have a copy 8/10/88 for trade? Anybody.... Even just the songs I need??? Hmmm.... Should I cross my fingers???

-Dan.

p.s. please e-mail for my bootlist: ragingday@msn.com thanks!!!

Yeah, you know what? I think you're right. That's a good idea.

I think Pastichio Medley is a bad name for your set though. There already is a Pastichio Medley! You should call it something-else Medley, or Pastichio something-else.

I'm curious... could you post your full list of songs that you're going to *******? Maybe your tentative list of what you have so far?

Here's what I've got so far. I haven't done much extensive research, but using the spfc list, the covers list, and my own personal knowledge of songs they missed, here's what I've got. A few songs may be deleted, a few songs may be added, and a few songs may never grace this compilation because of those "special" folks who have decided that all other Smashing Pumpkins fans are not "worthy" of hearing one old show that has been transformed from an actual concert performed in the 80's to a legend of such. That show must contain the meaning of life or something for those few people to keep such a tight grip on it. But whatever, this comp. should be fucking awesome with or without those couple of songs:

I went through the list and made some suggestions. I'm really sorry if I sound like a dick here... I don't mean it that way. This is just supposed to be some constructive criticism, and I'm sorry if I seem rude. I wouldn't be doing this if I didn't think your project was cool.

6234 (??!!??8/10/88) - might as well leave it off the list, because it ain't gonna happen
the aeroplane flies high (judas o) - you should use the version from the Zero single, with the full outtro
and I stumbled onto you (gd) - ugh, you're gonna ******* <i>demo versions</i> of released songs? You shouldn't. If you decide to just ******* <i>some</i> (like, the Gravity demos), then where do you draw the line? BWBW demo from Gravity? BWBW acoustic demo? You should just leave off the demos.
armed to the teeth (?!?!?) - again, these Avalon songs aren't gonna make it.
bhe black rider (666/pm) - yeah, that's a tough call. The PM one sounds better, but the 666 one is more complete. I guess I'd go with 666.
bleed (cr-05) - something to consider... maybe you should use the MP version? I mean, think about it - when Billy made his own compilation of songs, that's the version <i>he</i> chose to best represent Bleed. Both are good though. Acoustic RTS is another possibility, but I think I'd still go with MP.
blue skies bring tears (mach I/judas o/live) - with so many versions, I think I'd just stick with the official Machina I version. Otherwise it might get a bit out of hand, with alt. versions of songs.
boys don’t cry (live) - I thought they only teased this...
cash car star (mach II) - with two to choose from, here's my personal opinion: the LP version is better. :)
chump (mp) - this is just an alternate title for Slunk. You shouldn't ******* alternate titles on your compilation... you'd have two Slunks on there!
cinnamon girl (live?/mp?) - there's a studio version on the electric RTS demos, and it sounds great.
cross (?!?!?) - studio version is available on Nothing Ever Changes.
death don’t have no mercy (live) - too many obscure covers! if you're gonna use covers, you should just use the classic ones like Once In A Lifetime!
depresso (gd/pm) - full Depresso is on the MCIS electric demos, not the Gravity demos.
drown (spgh - ?!?!?!) - the GH version is abbreviated; use the track from the Singles soundtrack.
east (alternate) (89) - alternates! bah!
fly by night (live) - I'm not checking spfc on each one of these, but did they really play this in full? hmm...
Glass’ theme (mach II) - whatever you do, don't ******* the spacey version
Glimpses (live) - I highly recommend 7/5/97!!
Happy birthday (??!?!?) - oh please
Here’s to the atom bomb (judas o) - this is a tough call. Both versions were officially released. I guess I'd go with the Machina 2 version, because it was released on an album - the other one was just a b-side.
Holiday (?!?!?) - available on Nothing Ever Changes
Home (mach II)
Honeyspider II (89) - just use one version and end it!
I am one part II (89) - in this case, I guess I'd let this one slide. I really consider it a separate song, and I'm still skeptic about this being the correct title.
I fall (?!?!?-8/10/88) - not gonna happen. hey, I don't have it either, so we're in the same boat.
If there is a god (mach II/multiple) - Machina 2 EP version is my favorite, but I consider the LP version to be more "official" because it was released on an album. It's a tough call.
I need you around (blessed from adore demos) - demo :( oh and the song is <i>Blissed</i> and Gone
Infinite sadness (mcis bside) - I guess MP would be the best source, since it's digital (not vinyl-sourced)
Inna-gadda-da-vida (live) - just silly teases
The innocents (galap from gd) - :( I'm not gonna keep making these comments for the rest of the alternate/demo songs you have on here, but just know that I dissapprove :p
Join together (live) - I like 5/1/00, but there are lots of good ones
Kill your parents (live) - not a song. if you're talking about the Siva intro, then that was <i>a Siva intro</i> - not a song.
Kitty kat (mp) - booooooooo
Last instrumental (?!!?!?) - available on the partial 12/2/00 bootleg
The last song (33 single)
Laugh (mad)
Let’s dance (live?!?!?) - teased only
Lookout Loretta (live) - I consider this to be just an extended I Am One outtro played live; not a song
Mandocello (live?!?!?) - mentioned in previous post
Methusela (gd/pm) - not GD or PM; MCIS electric demos
My dahlia (89 or mp) - MP for best quality
My eternity (mp?) - yes MP please
Never say never (live) - tease??
Norweigan Wood (3rd waltz) - this was after the Pumpkins broke up.
Offer up (rockin’) (live) - I believe this is actually Jellybelly (early version)
Once in a lifetime (live) - I suggest 4/29/00, or the S+P SBD comp
Real love (mach II) - Rotten Apples version is best quality
Space jam (pm/live!) - gotta go with classic 1/8/97, even though some of the others are great
Speed (pm/gd/doubledoor) - double door!
Suicide kiss (geek ’92 - ?!?!?) - some versions to check out are 9/6/92 and 12/11/92, but I don't have a favorite
Time has come today (89) - make sure you use the full version from whatever show that was
V-8 (pm) - I could be wrong, but I think this was in 666 too...
Walking the dog (live?!?!!?) - this was at the First Waltz, right? it's too side project, if you ask me
Weeping willowy (pm/gd?) - yes GD
We love you (live) - I recommend 2/6/00, just because it's so classic
Your whore (live) - I don't consider this to be a real song. It was only done once, and it sounds to me like improvised vocals done over an extended Siva intro.

Towards the end I got a bit lazy about commenting on every little detail, but I think you had a few more covers in there that were never more than teases, and maybe one or two alternate versions of songs that you might want to reconsider. It's tricky though... Disco King, for example. I'd say Disco King should be okay to *******, but Arising-era BSBT shouldn't be. Then there are some, like Gravity demo BWBW, which are obviously off limits (if you were to ******* tracks like that, then it would become a project to compile every known recording of every known song). But what about Virex? Suicide Kiss? I'm not really sure... it all depends where you wanna draw the line on issues like this.

I hope some of this helps. At the very least, it cured my boredom.

Dear Smiley,

...thank you, thank you....
...oh yeah...
and thank you.

(dead: fuck off)

Some great pointers, and trust me, I've considered all the things you've said before. I'm doing this because it's going to be a great collection of songs in a random order to keep me entertained, and I'm not all that concerned about how accurate or realistic this is going to be. I know that Boys Don't Cry never got past the first chorus, but damn it, I love that little mellow version, so why not put it on? BSBT Arising version: totally sweet. Lookout Loretta, played 4 or 5 times, that's enough to make it a song to me. And I've gone through the trouble of dissecting the Pastichio Medley, so why not ******* the 10 second officially released snippet along side the full length Gravity version? So I may or may not use some of the things you pointed out, and yes, I think I'll leave the "Waltz" shows alone for sure. But I must sincerely thank you for many great pointers as to where something came from, or which version available may be the best. I had a good idea, and I typed up the list in like 45 minutes without having any of my boots nearby, so I had mixed up a few of the GDemo and EDemo songs. But with your help (and if anyone helps me track down a few extra songs) this should be a fun project.

I considered making something truely epic and accurate at first, but with the kinds of jerk-offs who criticize fans on Netphoria, and the anal-retentive nature of the SP community in general, I figured I'd let people know, ask for some advice, and leave it at that. I've wanted to own something or create something that the SP fans would admire me for, but it's just not going to happen. I've been a Pumpkins trader since early 1995, and have had my share of "rare" items over the days. But everything ended up making it's way out there, and it's pointless to try to beg and bribe and barder your way into getting some kind of "rare" recording. A new friend recently gave me some really great advice, "just talk to people and make friends and some day someone will just give them to you." Great piece of info, and guess what, it's already worked. But I just really don't get it when folks like our "dead" friend here suggest that I'm some cocksucking-hub-poser-newbie-derelict when I've been nothing but an honest, reliable, and friendly trader for 8 years now. So maybe the avalon show will come my way, maybe it won't. But one thing's for sure, it's not going to come my way by telling some hoarder: "I'll trade your my old 7/23/93 cassette plus my 1st gen 8/17/91 video and 78 other bootlegs for half of the 8/10 show." When I get it it will be because someone truely likes me and wants to be nice; or cause some ass hole breaks into somebody's house, steals it and spreads it around.

So thanks again Smiley for the help. And I'll tell you what I'm the most stoked about: curing another man's boredom!

-Dan.

You're welcome. :) Oh, and just one last piece of advice, regarding the whole thing about covers and teases - if I were you, I would really consider putting them on a separate compilation. You know, that way you'd have one for just SP stuff, and one for covers.

I'm pretty sure that was Todd White. It was back when NEC and those other Marked demos got spread. I have the topic saved somewhere on my HD, but I'm too lazy to check right now.

can we please forget that SP ever "covered" transmission?

while we're at it, i'd like to erase the existance of the song 'rock on' (all versions) from the history of the world. the world would be a much better place.

On the issue of incIuding covers or not, my thoughts are that it might be best to ******* covers that have been done in studio (such as NLMD, Landslide, Rock On, etc) and maybe only use live covers that were done repeatedly, ie Don't You Want Me Baby and OIAL. Covers like these seem to be more "pumpkin-ish" than the once in a while ones or only-done-twice ones. Those such covers could be *******d on another disc, maybe still part of the boxset, but still slightly seperate.
anyway, you're the guy making the thing, so its up to you. Good luck with it too, i'm quite impressed.

anyone wanna make bets on how many discs this will take?

it's not about good drumming. it's about it being a horrible, horrible song in the first place.

Thank you Smiley and Injektilo for the opinions and advice. I guess I'm still deciding exactly what to do. But most likely things will get worked out (meaning deleted or changed) during the compiling process. Including only the common covers was my first decision, but then I started thinking about the really cool one-time-er's and the fact that I wanted this to be a collection of every song the Smashing Pumpkins have ever played. So if I want that to be accurate I must ******* EVERY song...but we already know that isn't going to happen  So most likely final decisions will be made AS I start making it, which I was REALLY hoping would be this week. But I've got finals next week so it looks like this may be an early summer project. Either way, I can't wait. Thanks for the nice comments.

Oh, and Dead: I'm sorry, didn't mean to be an ass either. Just my great history of perfect trades and kind gestures didn't warrant a hand job remark. No hard feelings...

yeah... the thing about cd burners though is that you can always add songs when they eventually come out... ie maybe leave some room on the disc where you would ******* Armed to the Teeth in anticipation that it will probably become available someday. Then you could go ahead and make the box set now where every song now available is included, and then you can always update it eventually.

personally i wouldn't be supprised if some songs we don't even know exist were to happen to leak someday, or ones no one has ever heard before, ie Tulips (even if it is a demo of another song or something), so you may never have EVERY song.
it's still a hell of a goal though.

Ugh... so now improvised things are going to be *******d, too? If spfc.org removed it from the songlist, then they did so for a reason... they realized that it's not a SP song! If it gets *******d on this compilation, then there are a bunch of other things that need to be on there too... like the moshpit queen song, and the "they're from Chicago" song from Vieuphoria. What's next... stage banter? There's that b-o-r-e-d-o-m song that Billy sang at one show... where do we draw the line?

I'd really like to see a compilation of just SP songs - no covers, no jamming, and no alternate versions. I'm talking about just the actual Smashing Pumpkins songs.

Fares,
I like facts, please inform me.

Smiley,
I am enjoying making this compilation, and once I get those few final songs I will most likely compile the ultimate Smashing Pumpkins song chronology that will not ******* covers or alternate versions, and spend some real time researching to hope to find the actual choronology. But for the time being, since it isn't actually an "every song" box set yet, I think I'll ******* everything I feel like, because, after all, this is just a fun and cool set for me ;) Thanks for all your feedback!

No, Billy never gave me anything and specifically asked me to not trade it freely; I am merely enlightening those who refuse to consider the other side (the real side) of the story. The problem with too many people around here is that they fail to put themselves in someone else’s shoes. I can assure you that if Billy gave Dave 8/10/88 and said "trade it out please!" it would be out. The same thing happened when Agnew was given M2 - Billy requested it be traded and traded it was. In this case (8/10/88) Billy said "You can make copies if you want but be picky".. (we ALL know this cos Dave even scanned the disc and let us see – how nice of him;)) We have people on these message boards who are college graduates and still have trouble understanding this simple concept. I am not doing this to knock anyone, nor is this a personal attack on anyone – I am merely using this space to bring some understanding to this “hoarders” dilemma we so badly suffer in this community. This is where the problem lies!!! READ THIS NEXT PART CLOSELY!!!

Billy just gave you something rare, this isn't the first time he's given you something. Added to this he's specifically requested it not be traded out to the general public. You just got home from visiting mr. corgan and you have this never heard before material, boy are you excited!!! You can't wait to pop these things in your boombox so you can totally rock out. but what fun is there doing this alone? So you get on the phone and call Joe, Bobby and sally and tell about this new finding. In no time at all they hop on the next bus and head over to your place. You put those cd's in and man are they good! You're all content - your friends are peeing their pants cos they just heard this. After it's all be said and done there's this moment of clarity, Joe has to go home for supper but he wants to hear this stuff 24/7 - He can't get enough of it. So you say "ok listen, you and I we've been best buds since like jk - I have no problem making you a copy. But if it gets out all over the place and mr. corgan finds out, I'll not only be cut off from anything else but Billy will hate me and probably never want to talk to again". Your friends understand, they can easily put themselves in your position. Joe’s been like a brother to you since softball league way back! He’d never screw you over. Does this make sense to some of you out there? Are you drawing the parallels here?

Dave is NOT going to make –you– a copy if he doesn’t even know you! Or if he simply knows you as this faceless name on the internet. People really need to understand this, had Dave given Joe a copy and not done the same for Sally I’d understand your concern. But let me assure you this isn’t the case.

The story does have an ending and it’s happy… for the most part. Joe, Sally and Bobby got copies and to this day they listen to the discs exclusively and count their blessings for having such a good friend like Dave. Dave on the other hand has to deal with a variety of other problems, like people trying to be-friend him in hopes they too can get a copy or even resorting to publicly calling Dave names in a fit of anger because Dave won’t be their friend or make them copies.

There are 3 categories here. Those who were Dave’s friend and were freely given copies. Those who tried to become Dave’s friend to get copies, who later failed and bitched. And those who simply understood what the circumstances were surrounding the situation and just hoped that one day if they played their cards right they too could get a copy. Because you know – Joe, Sally and Bobby have friends too and Dave just might be willing to extend his generosity (and further put his balls on the line) for those people too.

This is the story of Dave Asselin and 8/10/88. The same thing can be applied to Frank Quinto and the Hideout.

You can’t call these people “hoarders” for not sharing this material! This is all politics is and for those of you who don’t understand it you need to take a step a back and shut your mouth because you really do come off as an idiot to those who are informed. The problem these days is that the morons are simply outnumbering those who get it :-/ such is life.
