liquid slide, this isn't directed towards you specifically, but you just reminded me of it-

Why do people say "Zwan are..." ?

If it was Radiohead, you'd say "Radiohead is playing". If it was Pearl Jam, you'd say "Pearl Jam is playing". Why is it "Zwan are playing"? That just sounds wrong.

It should only be "are" when the band is a plural noun. Examples: "The Beatles are playing"; "The Smashing Pumpkins are playing"; "The Frogs are the greatest band in the world". But when it's just a single word like "Bush" or "Zwan", it should be is.

Okay, that's my rant. Sorry.

i say "are" about every band.

I say Papa M IS ( because he's the only member)
otherwise I use plural all the time, too ( if there's more than one member in the band)...

yeah i know what you mean, but i always use the plural, in the sense that 'we're a group, this is our collective name, but we're all still musicians', kinda like it pisses me off when people say 'manchester united is the best team in england' as opposed to 'man u are the best team in england'. anyways, it's all good

yeah, unless the band is just known by the frontman.

you wouldn't say 'ozzy osbourne are playing'.

The band (singular noun) is what we refer to when we're talking about them. We're not referring to all of the members separately. We're talking about them together, as a single unit. That's why they have a band name. So...

Good:

"Zwan is good!" = "That band is good!"

Bad:

"Zwan are good!" = "That band are good!"

In conclusion- Zwan is going to be playing at Glastonbury.

well i always use the plural because i consider them a group of musicans, as opposed to a singular entity. i always use the plural, as in 'radiohead are playing' except when using one name 'marilyn manson is playing'. basically adding nothing new to this thread, so have fun at glastonbury everyone....

Firstly "the band" and "zwan" are not synonymous, however both "are" and "is" are more or less correct. It all depends on whether you are viewing the name of the band as an entity, such as a singular production; or merely the collective title for the group of members.

I prefer the latter.

i don't think "zwan is good" should be interchangeable with a movie title for example, like "schindler's list is good".

the band should actually be a collective noun for the "group of musicians"
and it has the same effect of saying "the people"
that is why it is wrong to say "the people is good".

Could you imagine saying "the beatles is good?", it just sounds wrong.

that hilarious image is old..

but arguing on the internet is no different than arguing in life, concessions don't have to be made.

If you don't like arguing or debating then i think you're in the wrong place. www.zwan.com is for you.
There you can suck each others' cocks freely.

The point is that neither I nor noah is retarded, just you,

you braindead fuck.

the main difference between arguing on the internet and arguing in life is that arguing in life is much more instantaneous, and the fact that everything is much more tangible and that people really know each other usually stops even stupid people having "debates" or "discussions" as moronic as this one.

Smiley is right. It doesn't matter if you consider the band name a substitute for the collective group of musicians; it's still a group of musicians or a band.

Zwan is playing. The Beatles are playing.

I'm 100% sure about this.

that whole tangibility argument is such a fucking irrelevant issue to raise. Yeah, let’s just dispose of all types of discussion that is not face to face.
It's funny that you have a problem with this discussion, but yet you don't seem to have a problem with discussing d'arcy's shoes or something just as pedantic.

I'm sure english teachers would disagree with you that this topic is 'moronic'.
But it's only defined as moronic through your own narrow subjective belgian brain, I'm not surprised that you don't care about the correct use of english, just take a look at what you fucking call a sentence.

But isn't The Beatles just a collective name for a group of musicians in the same way that Zwan is?
