Latest addition to the long list of questionable decisions... :dammit: As if their performance of 'Fly' by Sugar Ray with Mark McGrath wasn't bad enough, this is just as cringeworthy

You say that, but let's not forget that Billy included excruciating videos of McGrath in the Shiny tour and even made him the worst part of that stupid Silvery video. Would it shock anyone if Hanson showed up on the next tour?

I love how, for the last 20 years, Billy consistently pointed to pop stars, boy and girl groups, and celebrity culture as the death of alternative culture. He even mentioned in some interview that the band used to joke that "Spin magazine in 1998" signaled the death of the band. Yet, since then, we've seen him hang with (and he's been complimentary of) Paris Hilton, Tila Tequila, Mark McGrath, Fred Durst/Limp Bizkit, and now Hanson. Admittedly, the Hanson connection make a little more sense because of James Iha's connection to the group; but still.

People are so emotionally invested in this band that they feel vicarious embarrassment when Corgan does something "uncool," because these fans are insecure about looking uncool in association.

It's okay, don't listen to the other kids at school who tell you that your favourite band is lame because they hang out with uncool pop stars on stage.

Let me guess Billy, you're playing the heel again. How edgy and ironic.

It almost feels like he's trying to really ramp up and exaggerate the heel aspect of his performance in an attempt to prove to people that he really was just playing a heel during all those years when he was being a complete asshole.

Story time: Tulsa native, late summer 1995, I’m a young kid cruising the neighborhood on my bicycle. I have a cassette player, I’m jamming Pisces Iscariot. I live right next to Drapp studios. See some kids in the parking lot and ride over to them. It’s the Hanson’s, they’re chilling after a day of recording. I let Taylor Hanson listen to my yellow Sony sports cassette player. He really likes what he’s hearing. Fast forward fourteen years. My band finishes a set at a downtown bar to about ten drunks and a few vagrants. I sneak off with the $24 I made and decide to spend it on a barbeque dinner. I walk up to the joint, it’s the side stage of Tulsa’s historic Cain’s Ballroom. I go in and the food area is closed. There is a band playing. Its Taylor Hanson’s new band Tinted Windows. James Iha is standing out on the small stage and they play some of the most godawful music I’ve ever heard to about thirty people. Fast forward to last night. I am front row, dead center at a 2018 SP show. I am not having a great time. Already got into a fight during the opening band. There are late 40’s, early 50-year old’s spilling beer everywhere. It smells like marijuana and sweaty ass. Billy has gone completely batshit insane, Jimmy is completely tuned out (he spaces out multiple time and Billy even comments about his attention), James is absolutely beaming with ear to ear smiles and is genuinely having a great time. Jeff and the other nameless dude are whatever. They announce a special musical guest. It’s the fucking Hanson’s and they are getting to sing with the fucking band. Life, full circle or something.

Yeah, I was kinda done with them at that point too. Really wasn't digging Rollin' or My Generation at the time, though I do like both now.

Quite honestly, I didn't actually listen to the full album until only like 5 years ago (my musical interests moved quickly in those days), but there's a lot of shit I quite like on it.

got damn if i hadn't grown up w/ that album so to speak (or well, if my friends & i hadn't listened to it during our 11 y.o. summer) i am not so sure i'd give it much benefit of the doubt at all. Still tho, at least Wes Borland kept the guitar side of things relatively interesting, when he wasn't relegated to "my first guitar book" power chord sheeit for Fred to go @ Trent Reznor over

I mean, I haven't listened to Hanson since Middle of Nowhere in 1997(?) but their career isn't really that embarrassing, especially if we're using SP/BC as a measuring stick.
They escaped the bubblegum pop and apparently make legit music, have a craft beer, etc. I bet their older lady fan base could be a little embarrassing but I really doubt they are embarrassed by their career tbh.

It is. I still ride for Middle of Nowhere, as evidenced by my comment above.

That's fair. My point is really though that Billy tends to go out of his way to go to bat for/perform with people that aren't exactly looked on as having a lot of credibility: Hanson, Mark McGrath, Fred Durst. He probably sees them all and himself as underdogs.
