View Full Version : Moments that give you goosebumps
Ram27 07-02-2018, 09:30 PM With so much sadness lately, I thought this might be fun. What are some SP songs, concerts, interviews that still make you feel something?
personally, I love when the crowd starts singing along to Disarm @ Pinkpop, despite not knowing the rhythm of the live version. They come in early and Billy giggles as they join in in time

bright_doom 07-02-2018, 09:46 PM Last week, after a few drinks I found myself watching the Lost 94 Tapes from the Vieuphoria dvd, full blast, on a big screen for the first time in years. And holy shit, Soma>Hummer>Porcelina instrumental>Silverfuck... Combined with Eric Remschneider and the psychedelic, almost surreal superimposition visuals of the members playing on top of each other made for quite an experience.
It literally is the opposite of Oceania live.

dang, just imagine writing a confessional song like disarm and watching 50,000 people singing along to your song, fucking peak experiences man. no wonder billy got fucked up, how many people can come out of that humble, after seeing that shit 100s of times.
Elphenor 07-02-2018, 10:11 PM I'm drunk right now but damn that is such a good song for real

run2pee 07-03-2018, 08:56 AM The performance of Rocket of 8-14-93 (on the dvd that came with the SD reissue) is especially euphoric
F i love rocket. Such a strange, creative arrangement, with the buzzing drone of the verse ‘peggio juxtapose with those grinding pre-choruses and choruses and post-choruses, the serpentine lead hooks biting, stinging, tangling round your brain.
Add to that a top notch jimmy part sorta stuttering in the verse, just a bit to keep u from fading, then whompa pom! send u into the stratosphere for the exciting parts
Plus when bill go “AH SHALL B FREY”
LaBelle 07-03-2018, 09:06 AM misread title as monuments.
Shadaloo 07-03-2018, 10:01 AM -The very beginning of Tonight Tonight once the strings kick in
-The static leading into the opening shredding of Bodies
-The first and last notes of Soma as well as the crescendo
-All of the 'alternate' GATGC

smashedguava 07-03-2018, 05:02 PM - Outro of Cinder
- Untitled guitar solo
- Starla guitar solo 1994-02-25
- Here is No Why (just the song in general)
BurtSampson 07-03-2018, 05:07 PM The “if you’re giving in” part coming in over the end of the solo in Here Is No Why
Brisk 07-03-2018, 06:45 PM The Speed Kills jam from Pittsburgh 1999
House of Bread 07-03-2018, 10:39 PM Been looking for some absolutely amazing live version of Disarm from the SD-era that was posted on here forever ago. It captured the song at its purest and made me feel like I was hearing it for the first time all over again, which is nearly impossible for most of their hits. Wish I had more deets on what it was.
eviltimeban 07-04-2018, 04:04 AM The middle to end quiet part of Hummer, takes my breath away every time. So delicate, so dreamy, basically THAT is Smashing Pumpkins right there.
First loud chorus of Rhinoceros.
When the echo on the vocals kicks in after the "fallen kite" line in Obscured, and the e-bow at the end.
Quiet outro of Soma.
I'm gonna say it, the intro to Quasar. And the solo after the chorus line in My Love Is Winter.
First chorus of Stand Inside Your Love.
The little middle duo guitar part in Galapagos.
The breakdown in Blue.
The quiet middle part of Geek USA.
All of Whir.

Ram27 07-04-2018, 11:14 PM I think I've posted 5 threads about that live Ruby outro but fuck it gets me every time
FoolofaTook 07-04-2018, 11:31 PM ^^^ Yeah dude. the way they switch solos and then the main riff comes back in all heavy and shit. i love porcelina and but live ruby is the best mcis era epic NO DOUBT.
smashingjj 07-04-2018, 11:39 PM never heard of it but it sounds interesting; will give it a try
Corgan's Bluff 07-05-2018, 12:09 AM "Ruby" was the song that made me a fan of the band,
"Solara" is the song that made them a fun of a band.
BurtSampson 07-05-2018, 12:25 AM Also, how great is that end solo of Untitled. Such an underrated song
FoolofaTook 07-05-2018, 01:43 AM never heard of it but it sounds interesting; will give it a try

New Art Rioter 07-05-2018, 03:06 PM The fake out in the first chorus of SIYL where it initially hits with a huge guitary wash, then when it gets to "you're all that I..... dream!" it REALLY kicks in across the frequencies - amazing moment, sounds incredible

I love this part of the song. It’s a bit of songwriting brilliance.

"Beautful" is my favorite Smashing Pumpkins song. Good call!
themadcaplaughs 07-06-2018, 01:38 PM Choosing one moment from each album:
Gish: She knows through the end of the song in "Rhinoceros."
Siamese Dream: Sort of an extended moment, but the frantic ending of "Silverfuck," into "Sweet, Sweet," and ending with "Luna." As great as other individual songs on Siamese Dream are, this stretch really shows everything the band could do when it fired on all cylinders.
Mellon Collie Disc 1: "Galapagos" "
too late to turn back now, i'm running out of sound
and i am changing, changing
and if we died right now, this fool you love somehow
is here with you
Mellon Collie Disc 2: (Besides "Beautiful")
The last minute or so of "Bodies" with the guitars in full phase and Billy screaming "love is suicide" so rough it sounds like his voice will give out.
Adore: The "barbershop quartet" breakdown in "Behold! The Nightmare." Most people point "Medellia of the Gray Skies," but this is my favorite collaboration between Billy and the Flemion brothers.
all you have to do is run away
and steal yourself from me
become mystery to gaze into
you're so cruel in all you do
but still I believe, I believe
you
Machina: My initial gut instincts were "I blow the dust of my guitaaars" from "I of the Mourning" or "desolation yes hesitation no" from "Age of Innocence," but it's hard to argue with "This Time:" as the curtain falls, we bid you all goodnight."
Machina II: "Home"
"Love is everything I want"
Zeitgeist: Outro guitar solo for "Pomp and Circumstances."
Teargarden: Guitar solo for "A Song for a Son."
Inkless: End of "Wildflower" when the ebows kick in.
Monuments to an Elegy: Haven't listened to it since 2015.

YES. Turn it up on headphones for even greater results.
Also in IOTM when the heavy guitars kick in during the "real" chorus (as my... RADIO PLAYS MY FAVORITE SONG)
spidrr 07-07-2018, 12:39 AM The build up in Quiet into when Billy yells then it drops into the solo. That’s the moment that got me into the band back in 93.
The solo in The Groover (pastichio version)
All the solos in Plume
Hummer - “It’s alright honey, it’s alright yeah!” - then gets heavier on that E and Jimmy’s fill, then the guitar leads
The second chord in the Mayonaise chord progression after it kicks in.
The end of Hello Kitty Kat
When the chorus in Stand Inside Your Love changes to the G chord
Just to name a few.
FoolofaTook 07-07-2018, 12:43 AM i have related this several times but i once had the weirdest and most intense deja vu ever. it was the first time i listened to SIYL. is was so weird. once i got to the outro (for the last time, i'm telling you how much i need and bleed...) it was as if i had heard it before. i anticipated every word, every note. it blew my mind.
and this was before drugs.

"AYE YOUST TA BAY A LITTLE GARL"
Billy's fury.
Jimmy's fills.
D'arcy's pick attack on the bass especially when the 2nd verse kicks in.
and the element that nearly brings me to tears is James Iha's lead, especially the ending solo. If you still have a wig by the time this performance reaches its end then I don't want to know you.
