View Full Version : Ya ha ha! (or, the video games thread) teh b0lly!!1 06-06-2018, 01:54 PM ok so, i'm pretty sure i'm buying that super-coo mini SNES thing in the next few days. i'm kinda stupidly stoked. will post pics. run2pee 06-06-2018, 02:13 PM YES!!!! DO IT What will u play first teh b0lly!!1 06-06-2018, 02:27 PM omg i dunno might be Contra 3 although Super Mario World may just be my most titanic fav video game of all time run2pee 06-07-2018, 09:39 AM Contra 3s good but is going to make you feel bad about yourself if you haven’t played in awhile, it’s friekin punishing right? I’d say yeah, ease into it with smw which I agree is probably still the best mario there’s ever been You an rpg nut? Ever play ffiii? That’s one of if not my fave rpg of the whole world, man.....oh god the music, the colors, the kefka Disco King 06-07-2018, 01:09 PM don't get me wrong I really enjoyed the first game in that Batman series I thought the sections where you had to take out baddies with guns that could one shot you were adequately tense and required you to go about things in a clever Batman way what was kinda disappointing is sequels came out that were more of the same thing but less fun, I never got the full Batman experience I wanted though I felt like the foundation was set City half committed to an open world thing, but didn't commit hard to a real breathing Gotham with civilians and stuff The first game is still probably my favourite because of the tight level design and atmosphere, but I enjoyed City a lot, as well. Felt that giving us a bigger world allowed it to offer a different experience from the more Metroidvania-style first game. It was still, relatively speaking, a pretty small open-world map, as it prioritized density over having large stretches of space with nothing to experience. I forgave the lack of civilian NPCs, because it was an open-air prison. It was Origins where it felt like they were just doing "same shit, different game." And this time, the lack of civilian NPCs wasn't as justified, and had the really flimsy reason of their being a city-wide curfew. What the fuck kind of major metropolitan city has curfews? And I guess also "it's Christmas" and "there's a blizzard, so nobody's outside," but that just feels really lazy. Still, I mostly enjoyed the game, because I liked City enough that I was glad to play another however-many hours of it via a City clone, but it really shows that this was some game rushed out by another studio to fill the gap between Rocksteady games. Then the final Rocksteady game came out, and they had an even bigger world with an even shittier reason for why nobody is in it. The Batmobile took over everything. For the first few hours, I was actually regretting purchasing this game, and it doesn't actually pick up and feel fun until the level on the dirigibles, which is mostly fun because it recalls the tight level design and puzzle-like challenges of the earlier entries. After that, there's some fun levels, so I was like "okay, I'm enjoying this," but overall, still a letdown. And the story is the stupidest of the series, probably a consequence of not bringing back Paul Dini, an actual, you know, writer, and just having the development staff cobble a story together. Disco King 06-07-2018, 01:15 PM Been playing a bit more Phantom Pain, and I'm starting to wonder why I liked it so much. It's one of those games were there's no reason for the open world other than extending the time it takes you to get between objective markers. It's literally kilometers and kilometers of empty desert space, and then some outpost with soviet soldiers. The gameplay isn't very varied. You kinda need more than one pillar to keep the gameplay exciting. All there is to do in this game is sneak into enemy bases. And there's really no way to get perfect stealth other than trial-and-error and playing the same level until you just memorize how the NPCs react on that particular level. That's not as interesting as allowing the player to actually strategize. Having to collect all that currency just ends up feeling like busywork and grinding. I should probably try the earlier Metal Gear games that were more linear, but the only one available on my system seems to be that hack-'n'-slash one that isn't even a stealth game. Elphenor 06-07-2018, 01:46 PM I've been playing KOTOR 2 Restored Version the first KOTOR game was an excellent Bioware RPG and I'm not even a big Star Wars fan, experience where you play the first quarter the game shooting blasters making the moment when you learn you're a powerful Jedi and wield a saber pretty awesome the sequel was rushed and missing content so I didn't play it, but mods are a wonderful thing and over the years the game has been fully realized as what it was meant to be Sonic Johnny 06-08-2018, 06:31 AM XCOM 2 is the free game on the PSN this month and it's everything people said it was. I'm hooked bad. run2pee 06-08-2018, 09:03 AM I snagged that xcom unknown enemie for ps3 but haven’t circled back to it yet The tactical turn base stuff is a genre i just never played, until steamworld heist recently, which I’ve really enjoyed, despite feeling I still don’t quite “get” what im supposed to be doing, other than moving/covering and shooting sometimes Sonic the Johnhog, would u please describe your xcom gameplays and thrilling exepreiences here in this thread to enrich us with tales of tactics and turn-baseds? LaBelle 06-08-2018, 10:04 AM I've been playing Bloodstained: The Curse of the Moon. This game rocks, if you like the Castlevania games it's a must buy. Sonic Johnny 06-08-2018, 10:52 AM Sonic the Johnhog, would u please describe your xcom gameplays and thrilling exepreiences here in this thread to enrich us with tales of tactics and turn-baseds? I also never have much been one for the genre but the thing i noticed about XCOM was that it was immediately really playable. Gameplay is fairly spartan, no needless over-complication, things like cover and movement systems are dead straightforward which keeps you engaged with what's unfolding in the action rather than doing numbers or poring over item select screens or whatever. The real hook for me though is how it lets you get invested in the story yourself. I've always found video game storytelling largely clumsy and XCOM gets around this by mostly ditching traditional storytelling and just letting you get invested in the characters of your squad. You kit them out, teach them skills, level them up etc, remember some heroic shit they did one time, and then one day you roll out on a routine side mission and you don't see an alien off to one side of the screen and your character gets merked in one hit and that's it and they're gone forever, no ceremony, the game continues like a regular enemy grunt had died, and you're left with a way more gratifying emotional payoff than any in-game-asset cutscene can lay on you. Lots of games talk about "building your own story" but it often rings hollow; not so here. run2pee 06-09-2018, 03:41 PM I also never have much been one for the genre but the thing i noticed about XCOM was that it was immediately really playable. Right now the ps3’s just sitting. Was bumping some farcry 3 on there from time to time, a little dragons crown. Now it’s all switch. When you can play AAA on your belly in bed with detached ‘cons, it’s just hard to ever make yourself go sit on a couch somewhere Been playing Layers of Fear most recently. This game is excellent. Basically a highly immersive haunted house simulator. On headphones and in the dark, game provides psychelic dread, oppressive atmosphere, punctuated by jolts of pure terror. I would highly recommend to anyone who likes ghosts/adventures Elphenor 06-13-2018, 05:59 AM I've got 60 hrs on KOTOR 2 now and while I still have 2 planets left to explore before the final showdown with Sith masters, my Jedi is an absolute god thanks to me scouring the galaxy for every bit of loot available my force push is upgraded into a 360 tidal wave of dimensional rippling that eviscerates armies of mercenaries Shadaloo 06-13-2018, 10:57 PM Doom Eternal announced at E3 Fuck yes Sonic Johnny 06-14-2018, 12:37 AM I quite enjoyed how faithfully the Doom reboot captured the spirit and mechanics of the original series but I got bored of it pretty quick. ID will need to innovate to get me to get in on this one. teh b0lly!!1 06-14-2018, 12:46 AM i would have loved to play it but unfortunately i don't own a 3000$ gaming rig teh b0lly!!1 06-14-2018, 12:48 AM can't wait to get my overpriced outdated 90's hardware in the name of sweet nostalgia Sonic Johnny 06-14-2018, 01:18 AM i would have loved to play it but unfortunately i don't own a 3000$ gaming rig yknow current gen consoles are like one tenth that price teh b0lly!!1 06-14-2018, 09:32 AM i find all current gen consoles pretty soulless and unattractive, tbh. but even regardless of being a picky old man, i just have a hard time justifying throwing down 300$ on being able to play video games here and there. it kinda sucks that playing games is pretty much impossible anymore unless you're heavily invested in it in the first place. Disco King 06-14-2018, 09:53 AM They say that the next generation of gaming consoles is due out around 2020 or so. New features will ******* emergent consciousness, support for customizable souls, and game streaming. If I hadn't won an Xbox at a staff party, I wouldn't play games. I also can't justify $300-$400 just to play vidya. I don't even buy games brand new. $70 for a video game? Jesus, who has that money? I wait until they are, like, $20 in th discount bin or something. run2pee 06-14-2018, 01:08 PM How much money do you fucken dummies spend on booze and drugs in a month? Or even eating out? Just stop it for once, save up enough for a switch and Zelda and/or Mario, and then buy $10 indie masterpieces on the eShop when (a year or two later) you’ve exhausted those If you really wanted to game, you would game. All these lame excuses about wahhh $$$$ are for losers, man Elphenor 06-14-2018, 01:44 PM or just play all the major releases 10 years after they come out on your laptop for free or heavily discounted through Steam next up for me is probably Dragon Age Origins more Bioware RPG teh b0lly!!1 06-14-2018, 05:53 PM it's not even only about the price point, or the prerequisite to be deeply invested in order to participate; the whole scale of things has changed. video games these days seem to be about immersing the player in a lengthy, seamless, heavily cinematic experience, or about delivering a monolithic open world gameplay. i miss simpler times, where games were designed to have shorter, bite-sized levels that you could pace on your own. the better games offered deep exploration possibilities, but it wasn't like today where firing up a game lends itself to burning through 3-4 hours. i'm purposely talking in extremes to make my point, and needless to say i've played fantastic games that had longer levels than Doom - but bottom line is, in today's video gaming scene, i can't help but feel like there's not really much room at all for casual gamers like me anymore. and that's a shame, cause i still have a love and appreciation for it. teh b0lly!!1 06-14-2018, 05:56 PM plan is to pull the trigger on that SNES mini this coming week, btw. run2pee 06-14-2018, 08:05 PM He’ll yeah snag that snes for sure You ever consider a dedicated handheld? A 3ds is friekin cheap right now and between it and the ds you have one of the finest libraries on any console. And many of the games are designed to be delivered in smaller, less intimidating chunks, exactly as you describe. My 3ds feels a lot like having a snes in my pocket. Another bonus: any time you’re done you just flip the thing closed and suspend it and just pop it open when you’re ready again. So you don’t have to feel like you need to lose hours at a time For me the switch is the ultimate solution: can plop on the couch when i feel like the big immersive experience you describe, or just rock thru some Isaac or Stardew in friekin bed before nightnight. If the library continues to expand, it will be THE console, for me. Bring on the ports. I want every game ever on this shit if possible LaBelle 06-14-2018, 10:13 PM Animal Crossing though, I wish I could suspend my life so I could be in Animal Crossing 24/7 (fuck you tom nook you capitalist swine!!!!!) How does one get into animal crossing? I gave one of these on the Wii to my sister and she liked it, but i never got a chance to try it yet LaBelle 06-14-2018, 11:08 PM The 3DS one, New Leaf is pretty awesome. It's the first one I ever played and was quickly hooked to it. I'd recommend giving it a spin, it's prob very cheap by now. run2pee 06-14-2018, 11:14 PM Kickass is it online Do I get to see other ppls cuddly animal villages? Does it turn from dark to day to night again? Do you fish? What do you do in it, anyway LaBelle 06-14-2018, 11:30 PM You can visit other people, but you have to be friends with them so you can invite them, you don't just meet random people. The game functions in real time, meaning the time of day changes with time, as do the seasons. The meat of the game is you buy your own house on a loan from Tom Nook (the most evilest of beings pictured below) and you do a number of activities to pay off your loan to Tom Nook who then offers you incremental upgrades to your house for larger and larger loands. You can fish, find fossils, catch bugs, collect fruit and there's even a stock market equivalent in game. The gothic, turn-based rpg about the unique stressors of adventuring? I’m friekin hooked. It’s hard as balls sometimes and your people bleed everywhere plus lose their minds, and you have to lock them in the sanitarium or pay for a night in the brothel so they can blow off steam, but i love it somehow. Still haven’t done much but F around in low level ruins trying to train up a few choice heroes, keep em from that nagging ever-present permadeath reprise85 06-23-2018, 04:18 PM no but that sounds fucking amazing and imma check it out 70% off on steam yessss run2pee 06-23-2018, 07:12 PM Do it!!! Tell me what heroes you like and we can trade stategems Right now I’m using the plague dr and lady that can stun/heal in back, large dude with mace in front, wild card behind him (either highwayman or executioner) I did it! So my first real strategy has been to have 1 or 2 ppl who can Mark and have those two + a 3rd person who has a strong attack vs. marked plus some sort of healer. for example: Crusader (dat stun, can heal a little, +24 light seems useful. tanky.) Occultist (has the best heal though it's variable, can debuff/mark) Bounty Hunter (can mark back two positions, pulls them forward to the front, attack is +90% damage vs marked) Houndmaster (+60% damage vs marked and can attack any position, and also a second attack that marks and debuffs) so i can mark anyone in any position and if they're in the back they get pulled up and their ass is beat in one round, and then stun the second most powerful... etc seems to work real good so far run2pee 06-23-2018, 11:29 PM That’s bitchin I need to mess around with markings, i’ve mostly been trying to keep multiple characters who can stun so those creepy dicks that throw stressful tempting goblets (of blood) in your mouth won’t stress everyone out, plus the lady with the scary incantation How about that narrator huh gosh i just love it when he say something like “another one FALLS” or “back to the PIT” reprise85 06-24-2018, 04:12 AM yeah it's coll, i like it reprise85 06-24-2018, 09:50 PM i just played for like 3 hours straight after being up since 4am and working all day. i am fucking toasted it's getting a little repetitive but that's cuz i suck a lot and am having problems finishing dungeons to level people. but i'm learning. run2pee 06-24-2018, 11:02 PM My biggest struggle right now is keeping enough money to do stress relief and send em to the sanitarium to cure bad habits etc Apparently there’s a puppet show that’s like cheap stress relief but I need more wealth to build it I feel there’s depth here im not yet appreciating, a lot of different ways to build a strong roster but yeah i am doing it the hardest/longest way by just running low level dungeons to level whoever will survive teh b0lly!!1 06-25-2018, 01:23 AM i don't mean to be the drooling kid but the snes is awesome and totally worth the price of admission. i think i'm gonna flash it in the next few days and put some extra games on it, Turtles in Time and Mario All Stars are the most immediate dudes to get on there but i'm also finding so many more that seem worth looking into. It doesn't matter if the gameplay is repetitive and the map is gratuitously bloated with empty space if it's fun, does it? At the end of the day, the game's only job is to be fun. I feel like it was actually not a bad decision given the circumstances to make a game that stripped a lot of the storytelling out and gave players a big, pretty sandbox and a well-refined iteration of the core gameplay mechanics. I'm not a *giant* MGS fan like some people but I found V to be one of those games I can leave for months and then pick up and play for an hour or two when I feel like it, which you wouldn't say for the other entries in the series. Sonic Johnny 06-27-2018, 09:21 AM XCOM 2 is absolutely ruining my life right now. I started over my first two campaigns within the three hour mark as I was learning and taking heavy losses, got out to about six hours on the third campaign and realised that something i'd failed to address in the non-combat strategic part of the game was going to cost me so bad i'd ruined my shot, now approaching maybe twelve hours on my fourth run at it. Told that a full successful playthrough of the campaign can take 20+ hours. It's really, really bloody hard is I guess what i'm saying. reprise85 06-27-2018, 02:45 PM Kickass i didn’t know the highwayman had a riposte, maybe i need to unlock it at the guild I tried a jester on your advice last night and did pretty well in a low level ruin, but made the mistake of sticking one of the crossbow ladies in there and she wanted the same position in the party as the jester, so that sucked; she could only do like 1 combat skill from 2nd to front Right now healing and stunning are my two must haves, so my back two are always filled with plague dr and vestal, then of course someone’s gotta consistently hack n whack those baddies... This is the 1st game in a long time got me wanna get out some paper and do some homework planning the perfect party got desmos to level 6 so he's on ice right now. replaced him with a leper. i got a great trinket for him that's +3 speed, 11% crit so he's doing crits all over... almost 20% with chop. and he does so much fucking damage basically been alternating level 3 (about to do first level 5) runs with low level runs with antiquarian, low level jester and either low level vestal or occultist (for healing) and one damage person like houndmaster etc... just to get loot/money. i rarely worry about stress healing in town now, but of course diseases i still have to cure. also jester's battle tune or whatever it's called is stupidly great, +3 spd, +8 acc, +5% crit (at upgrade 4, still really high at any level) all party members... seriously my leper crits constantly. i want to start locking in positive quirks but that shit's expensive, 16k each right now Shallowed 07-01-2018, 03:07 AM Half Life: Opposing Force good reprise85 07-01-2018, 09:02 PM @Run To Me I took my first foray into the actual Darkest Dungeon within Darkest Dungeon. My all 6-level group wiped. Womp Womp. Figured there was a good likelyhood of that. Got to the boss of the mission but couldn't beat it. run2pee 07-03-2018, 02:56 AM It sounds like your triumphant pride precipitated a dizzying fall, tsk Man i suck fux at this game compared to you: 10 hours in and i don’t have any level sixers, im broke, i haven’t killed the necromancer or done anything but level 1 ruins trying to get $ to cure my vestal from trying to pants everyone when they’re not errect (dark fascination etc) What am i doing wrong?? You know i always suspected that deep down i suck at the vidya. i mean i love me some vg but when they get hard i just crumble, like it’s deep within me to suck fux run2pee 07-03-2018, 03:00 AM Part of my problem is you can’t play this like “ignore all stats math and skills instead grind for days until you are op then mash a button to win” which is how i used to beat all rpgs back in the snes days Like for example I have a party in ffiii killed sooooo many trex and brachiosaurs in that world of ruin forest that i could 1 hit kill silly kefka. Wish i could import sabin to bodyslam these dix in this dungeon game. And yet i can’t stop playing it reprise85 07-03-2018, 01:36 PM yes you can't ignore that stuff. i've realized that my party i explained before is great for level 1 and some short level 3 runs but that crowd control and blight/bleed (because with high protect % you can't just beat them down) becomes much more important in high level and that's why i wipe.. and keep wiping. i found a secret boss and i fucking killed him but the things he summoned killed my party. shit. also i've realized people are expendable until level 4/5/6. don't waste too much money on them. especially because my stagecoach can recruit level 3s now... also i realized the jester is great again for low level... but higher, you need to be able to take out the stress inducers and use camping if stress gets out of control.. so you need people who can hit (preferably stun) the back row and/or shuffle their party and also bypass stealth/guard. i still try to take someone who can stress heal (jester or crusader) but I was just spamming it before. crusader stress heals for less but also regular heals at the same time but i've played 30 something hours lol don't feel bad. also fyi, plague doctor can cure diseases (his own and another's) while camping. so you can take him along and not waste time/money curing someone Tchocky 07-05-2018, 08:59 AM IT IS DONE. <a href="https://ibb.co/dX2JUo"><img src="https://preview.ibb.co/efkGFT/IMG_20180620_145444.jpg" alt="IMG_20180620_145444" border="0"></a> hell. yes. I really prefer the appearance of the international SNES to the purple piece of crap we got in the States. run2pee 07-05-2018, 01:21 PM Yeah looks more fun I have soft spots all over my heart/butt for the purply one but thats puro nostalgia at work for the games it allowed me to play. Which are still probably my fave games just in terms of how often I’ve returned to them thru the ages. It truly is an ugly old box, tho, objectively speakin teh b0lly!!1 07-05-2018, 08:28 PM i had an american version as a kid so i have a soft spot for it, but yeah famicom is great too. this snes kinda made me realize just how much i missed as a kid. i didn't have many games. i'd never played a zelda game before cause i kinda missed that train, never played super metroid, never played megaman series. MAN if i played any of those as a kid, particularly the first two, my head would have probably exploded. even all these years later you can see why those games started multi million dollar franchises. they're just that good and have so much heart and care put into them. pure classic magic. but anyway, i already hacked mine and it was a total breeze. made sure i can put NES stuff on it too (and theoretically, almost any other contemporary console - genesis, gameboys, etc, but i've no real use for that). slapped some games on it: * Contra (probably the first childhood classic for me) * Final Fight 3 * Mortal Kombat 2 + 3 * Turtles In Time * X-Men: Mutant Apocalypse * Mario All Stars * Spider Man Maximum Carnage probably gonna add Earthworm Jim and Sunset Riders soon. anyone got mean recs? though, tbh, it's too many great games anyway and i don't have the time to dive deep into them anymore. but still nice here and there. i'd be playing zelda for weeks as a kid. reprise85 07-05-2018, 08:45 PM rpgs? chrono trigger and earthbound would be my suggestions. chrono trigger is a great fuckin game. earthbound is pretty good but it's novel cuz it's 'reality' based, like your character gets sick and goes to the atm etc run2pee 07-05-2018, 09:14 PM Both them shits on the classic already But yep teh b0lls if u did not already play the F outta both. Just go with whichever grabs you 1st they are both god-tier all time greats of the vidya entertainment genresphere reprise85 07-05-2018, 09:21 PM ah my bad hey so my hamlet is poppin, i got 30 people, all level 3-6, doing level 5 missions of different groups to see what kinda synergy i can manage before i send them to darkest dungeon. fuckin' plague doctor seems to be the best utility character... insanely high blights, can stun two in the back row or one anywhere. can heal blight/bleed and do a tiny bit of healing. can't do much damage or help with stress (or really regular healing). can also cure diseases during camping. hellion can hit the back person from the front row, and hit them hard. can kill most of the beasties i've seen in the back row in one or two rounds. i've adopted the highwayman again. his reposte is just too good. also i had an idea that works great, if you're going on treasure runs. bring the antiquarian and have them do their move where they force another person to guard them. BOOM, anyone attacks the highwayman OR the antiquarian the highwayman counter attacks. so i've been giving him lots of dodge, accuracy, and PROT from trinkets. pretty cool combo. i think my next foray into darkest dungeon will be highwayman/crusader/abomination/plague doctor. crusader with lots of healing trinkets so his heals are worthwhile. abomination heals himself when he transforms automatically and also has a move. plague doctor stuns whoever can do stress damage and crusader can do stress healing. i have a trinket so abomination does 40% less stress to companions when he transforms. abomination can do his non-transformed moves from third position, but not transformation ones. so if i want him to transform he has a move that moves him to second position. crusader cannot attack, only heal/stress heal from third position but if abomination is transforming you need some dedicated stress healing anyway. as you see i've been thinking about strategy lol teh b0lly!!1 07-05-2018, 09:23 PM pretty sure Chronotrigger was left out, looks 10/10. will check it out, thanks reprise85 07-05-2018, 09:30 PM chronotrigger is the best rpg ever. #realtalk run2pee 07-06-2018, 12:01 AM Dude they left chrontrig off the classic Omg u gotta march that sht back to nintendo tell em they done fuckd up Big Time That’d b like when jeff shriaddero left the smash hit rat in a cage off the legendary Siamese My Drem and then butchered it in the studio for his next timeless offering Meloncolin and the long lasting Teardrops run2pee 07-06-2018, 12:04 AM ah my bad hey so my hamlet is poppin, i got 30 people, all level 3-6, doing level 5 missions of different groups to see what kinda synergy i can manage before i send them to darkest dungeon. fuckin' plague doctor seems to be the best utility character... insanely high blights, can stun two in the back row or one anywhere. can heal blight/bleed and do a tiny bit of healing. can't do much damage or help with stress (or really regular healing). can also cure diseases during camping. hellion can hit the back person from the front row, and hit them hard. can kill most of the beasties i've seen in the back row in one or two rounds. i've adopted the highwayman again. his reposte is just too good. also i had an idea that works great, if you're going on treasure runs. bring the antiquarian and have them do their move where they force another person to guard them. I hope the scaplers out there are starting to sweat a little. Disco King 07-14-2018, 08:10 AM Kinda going crazy with getting whatever Metal Gear games I can get my hands on, seeing as I'm enjoying The Phantom Pain quite a bit. I got Ground Zeroes, which is the "prologue" to TPP, but it's more like a glorified game demo. Not that I'm complaining. I've already finished all the missions, and they were fun as hell. Even though it's got a single map, I feel like the level design of that map is better than any of the camps I've encountered in TPP so far. I was initially avoiding Metal Gear Rising Revengeance (who the fuck comes up with these titles?), because the entire reason I'm checking out the Metal Gear games is that I like stealth games, but this game appears to be more of a hack-'n'-slash. But one DLC mission in Ground Zeroes let you play as Raiden and I liked it, so it piqued my interest in the other game. Played the first boss fight of the game, and damn, this game is edgy as fuck. Embarassingly edgy. It's, like, the stereotype I had of video games before I started playing them more. Buttrock that sounds like Fuel or Breaking Benjamin plays during "intense" moments. One villain literally says the "nothin' personal, kid" line. So far, it doesn't seem like my kind of game. It seems like a game from a totally different series that they slapped the "Metal Gear" logo on. I also downloaded Peace Walker and bought Sons of Liberty for my old Xbox. Can't wait to play those ones to get some taste of some more classic Metal Gear. run2pee 07-15-2018, 10:44 PM Anybody else has been eyeing that Octopath Traveler? If you do the first few story missions, you should get to know 2 or 3 characters whose icons on the map will show you where you can go next to move the story forward. IMO the story, characters, and dialogue are the best part of the game, even better than the world, so just start playing. you can do most of the collectible stuff later, or at least after you have dug into the main quest line. although there is some variability in the mission order and you can do the strangers quests and collectible achievements at any time, nothing you do will change any dialogue or outcomes. There is only one ending. So don't worry too much, there is no better order to do anything in. My personal advice: be a good guy. It's the canonical choice as you can tell from Marston's character, and there isn't much benefit in being some evil motherfucker who gets fired upon as soon as you enter a town Elphenor 09-07-2018, 11:25 PM I remember I galloped off a cliff with my horse like 5 minutes in and landed and the horse just died as I crashed to the ground and I was laughing and then I skinned the horse and was like damn now I have no horse Sonic Johnny 09-08-2018, 12:44 AM I don't normally buy games at release but I had an EB store credit so i picked up Spider-Man. It's pretty good fun, nothing particularly new but it basically does for Spidey what the Arkham games did for Batman, which is to say: feels just right. Web traversal is a criminal amount of fun, and there's been a couple of really nicely cinematic missions that felt appropriately tense, but I have a feeling that once i've clocked it it'll get put down and never picked back up again. I'd say unless you're a spiderman die hard, wait for sale prices, definitely would have felt ripped off if i'd payed full price. run2pee 09-08-2018, 10:17 AM from mcfarlane ranch you are gonna want to go to Armadillo and start the storyline with the sheriff there. I don't know why, but I always find first-person an immediate turn-off. I have to go through life in first-person mode; at least give me the option to escape that in a video game. I feel like I'm not patient enough with video games, so it's hard for me to give them the time to allow them to pull me in, to get over that hump of just learning the controls and mechanics and get to where I'm just fluidly playing without thinking about that shit and just enjoying myself. Just like with Hitman, I played the first mission of Dishonoured just so that I could say that I at least finished a mission. I dunno, I should probably force myself to play it a little more, because on paper, it seems to have a lot of what I like in a vidya game (stealth, open-ended gameplay that allows for multiple different strategies, etc). I haven't gotten far enough in Isolation to actually encounter the 👽. So far, it feels a lot like a first-person version of Dead Space, but with less gore and more paranoia. Right down to the apocalyptic logs left everywhere, and the grafitti on the space-station walls. I'm guessing that has more to do with Dead Space itelf being influenced by the Alien movie than any connection between these two games themselves, but I've never seen an Alien movie, so I dunno. I'm liking it so far, even though the game often makes it pretty confusing where it wants me to go, and so far, things have kind of felt more like an interactive cut-scene than an actual game. Literally all the game has been so far is going through doors, or finding objects to help you bypass doors that are locked. And then meeting a Scotsman and doing the same shit with him. But I'm sure it'll pick up soon. The game gave me the option to use my mic so that the alien could be alerted by sounds I make in real life, and I'm just wondering, why the fuck would I want to do that? Lose a video game because I coughed, my pizza pops were ready, or a family member came into the room and started talking about their day or something? Who actually selects this shit? After defeating Harkon, I realized Serana is the best follower I have ever had (or maybe just the one I let stick around the longest), and her vampiric beauty was very striking under the moonlight, so I whipped out an amulet of mara and asked her to marry me. To my surprise, she said NO, that kind of thing isn't for us! In my despair I asked my housecarl and my thane, Mjol the Lioness, and it turns out BOTH of them want to marry me. But I love Serana. So I just had her turn me into a creature of the night instead reprise85 09-21-2018, 07:04 PM Started playing Ayy LMAO Isolation and Dishonoured. I dunno, I should probably force myself to play it a little more, because on paper, it seems to have a lot of what I like in a vidya game (stealth, open-ended gameplay that allows for multiple different strategies, etc). you get motherfucking magic powers from (that world's version of) THE DEVIL soon so it gets better in that regard. but i like FPS soooo Skradgee 09-28-2018, 03:01 AM hey there gamers i like...digital pinball? also i play Sonic Mania, Mortal Kombat, Wipe(3)out, and South Park games ain't that some stuff? drop me a PM to meet up on PSN...or don't run2pee 09-28-2018, 08:16 AM Started playing Ayy LMAO Isolation and Dishonoured. I've barely started, but it's looking like a fairly faithful Baldur's Gate homage so far. The squat, distended body of an elderly dwarf woman dangles from a thin, crooked bough that sags at the tug of her noose. The bloated purple flesh of her neck, worn away in patches like moth-eaten linen, bulges over the rope that suspends her, and her lifeless head lolls forward rigidly from one side to the other when the breeze shifts. reprise85 10-01-2018, 06:54 PM sounds cool i beat dishonored 2 and just got vamporium, which is like a first person cyberpunk dungeon crawler (with automap of course). lots of different loot and ways to play, i restarted after a couple hours to change my gameplay (there's a significant choice early in the game that can't be changed). dishonored 2 was better than 1 imo and i might play it again going full chaos kill-everything just to have a romp and see the other ending. Disco King 10-26-2018, 03:48 PM I'm all about waiting for game prices to decline. I was gonna get a PS4 and Spider-Man, but then I saw that the used Spider-Man price is only slightly lower than the new price. Not paying $65 bucks for a used game. Gonna wait until it is at most $40. Disco King 10-26-2018, 03:48 PM Okay, maybe $50. But not more than that. redbreegull 10-26-2018, 03:51 PM certain games seem to never drop significantly, and Rockstar games seem to be prime among them. You can sometimes get a good weekly deal and stuff if you browse Xbox marketplace deals vigilantly but I'm pretty sure GTAV is still $50 and it's half a decade old now Disco King 10-26-2018, 03:57 PM That's true. Games kept alive with online shit seem to retain their value. I see that there are package deals for PS4 Pros that come with RDR2, for the same price as a PS4 Pro with no game. If I'm going to get a PS4 for Spidey anyway, may as well get that and a free game with it. But at the same time, the Pro is more than $100 more expensive than the regular, and I don't know if I care about 4k gaming or whatever other features the Pro has enough to justify the extra cost. And there's no regular PS4 that comes bundled with RDR2. Then there's the slim, but I'm pretty sure 500 GB is nothing, and I'd end up having to buy an external hard drive, anyway. redbreegull 10-26-2018, 03:58 PM That's true. I've heard some peeps talking about upgrading their systems for RDR2, but getting a PS4 Pro for example... is that really worth it unless you have an amazing tv? Disco King 10-26-2018, 04:12 PM Probably not. I don't know if my TV is even 4k. And the current price of the game's special edition is $100, so if I purchased that and a regular PS4, I'd still be saving more cash than if I just went with a regular model. Add to that the fact that I'm in no special hurry to get this game and am willing to wait until the price drops, and the only reason I was considering getting it right away is that it comes free with a console. So, I should just get a PS4 for older Sony exclusives, play the first Red Dead while in the meantime (never played it before), and save money in the long run. Disco King 10-26-2018, 04:13 PM If it really does "redefine open-world gaming," I'd love to give it a whirl, because too many open-world games have that Assassin's Creed syndrome of just giving you a nice and wide space to complete pointless and unrewarding tasks in. I've heard a lot of things thrown around like, "redifines open world gaming," "takes sandbox gaming to the next level," etc. Would you agree or is the hype over the top? It's probably a little early for any sweeping statements, but I can definitely offer that it looks amazing. Safe to say, it's very much a faithful update of the original game with an impressive attention to detail. I like that your hair and beard grow over time, that the quality of animal furs depends on your method of hunting, and that NPCs feel more like individuals than you'd expect from a large-scale open world game. They achieve the cinematic feel they were clearly going for and I'm certainly pouring most my leisure time into playing it. redbreegull 10-29-2018, 09:44 PM I'm about 8 hours in and I don't really even have a grasp on all the mechanics. My initial impression is that hype about this game "redefining" open worlds is a bit much, but as is the expectation with Rockstar, each big release raises the bar from the last and the detail in this one is really incredible. I've heard people call this a short game, but it looks like it can be pretty long if you're a completionist, considering that it took me five hours to complete only the second mission with all of its side objectives. Fonzie 11-04-2018, 10:54 PM Have you banned it before the played it, or have they played it before? My kid plays it and loves it (he’s 11). I don’t have a problem with it as he’s a good kid and we control when he plays it, so no dramas here. vixnix 11-04-2018, 11:10 PM I banned it before they played it, and then kids of friends of ours installed it on my 13 year old's iPad while we were visiting their house on evening. So he snuck around playing it for a weekend before I found out about it. We removed it and put a password back on his iPad, and I said I hadn't changed my mind about it. I banned it because I think the premise is in poor taste with all the high school shootings in the U.S. You're not even fighting an enemy, you're chasing down and killing your friends - that's the only objective. I get that it's basically a virtual game of tag or something like that. But I'd rather have my kids outside playing actual tag. We rode the wave of gaming obsession with Minecraft, Pokemon GO, Battlefront and Overwatch and I just figured they could skip this craze and join in with the next one. But I'm not sure how long this one will last. I know my friend's sons played COD in teams all through high school, so maybe (hopefully not) this game will be around for years yet, in his peer group. Not many kids who are the same age as my younger kid, play it. But my 13 year old is one of a tiny handful in his year that don't play it. I did say I think it's basically a version of tag, and that being the case, I'd rather they were outside playing tag. I don't mind them playing laser tag so much because it involves running around and practising some motor skills. I did have two reasons for banning it though - not just the nature of the game. Also just to show them that the world wouldn't end if they "sat out" of one gaming craze. But now I'm just wondering whether for the next five years all of his friends will continue to play it, and he'll be left out, so maybe I should reconsider for his sake and mine so it isn't a huge battle when it doesn't need to be. Or whether its popularity is waning anyway so I can stay my course and let it blow over. Did any of you guys play it, or is it more for kids...or not popular in the U.S./Canada? redbreegull 11-05-2018, 01:47 AM It's super popular here but I have never played it and until you just explained it, I didn't even know the premise I personally never liked multiplayer games. I would rather get lost in a game by myself. It's introvert time. Disco King 11-05-2018, 03:45 AM I don't mind them playing laser tag so much because it involves running around and practising some motor skills. If kids are going to learn to be mass shooters through violent games, may as well git gud at it. This could mean losing girlfriends, wives, relatives, jobs. And Maybe your mind. It could mean not eating for three or four days. It could mean freezing on a park bench. It could mean jail. It could mean derision. It could mean mockery, isolation. Isolation is the gift. All others are a test of your endurance. Of how much you really want to do it. And you'll do it, despite rejection in the worst odds. And it will be better than anything else you can imagine. If you're going to try, go all the way. There is no other feeling like that. Seems like it starts awful slow I also just started playing the first Red Dead (well, the first Red Dead Redemption— apparently, the first Red Dead game was a third-person shooter called Red Dead Revolver that nobody remembers). I like it so far. It hasn't totally swallowed me whole, but it's fun, and I'm actually preferring Grand Theft Horse to Grand Theft Auto for whatever reason. I think it's the missions? The missions seem more interesting. My main barrier is rockstar’s style of doing npcs/peds has never been my favorite How am i to care about this world when it’s populated almost entirely by ppl who at bottom merely = dots for my pacman to eat? Not sure ive ever played an open world where i was truly satisfied by the npc interactions, but this and the gtas err hard on the side of arcadey/goomba-stomping type interactions, which breaks my immersion I agree that the NPCs seem like faceless, interchangeable peons, but I actually feel like Rockstar does NPCs better than most games. The NPCs actually seem to have things to do and places to go. You see them doing shit like getting in and out of cars, doing yoga in the park, buying food, and getting arrested, instead of just loitering and walking around in circles. You get the illusion that they actually have routines, purposes, and lives independent of the player character. Sometimes, it's satisfying to see some of the crazy shit happening in the background that isn't even being caused by you. It's some NPC that's driving recklessly and hitting other cars and running people over, instead of them all being perfectly coordinated with the player being the only source of chaos and mayhem. Still, one thing that bothers me about traffic in Rocksteady games: vehicles that are turning at intersections don't seem to yield to vehicles going straight through, yet because they are all part of the same hivemind, somehow this works out without confusion amongst the NPC drivers. But as soon as you try to go straight, some turning jackass will drive into you. I don't know enough about video-game AI to know how difficult it would be to programme in the rule that turning cars should typically yield to ones going straight, whether the car going straight is another NPC or the player. Probably much easier to tell them that they can just turn or go straight so long as they won't hit another NPC. Disco King 11-07-2018, 09:57 PM Wow, this makes me think about self-driving cars: since rules about yielding exist purely because we need some general rules we all follow since we can't read each other's minds, when most cars on the road are automated, they probably won't need such guidelines, because they will all be programmed to know when they can move without hitting other objects. So, they wouldn't need general rules about who yields to whom at an intersection, because they would all know what turns would be possible without having a more-than-acceptable risk of hitting anything. run2pee 11-07-2018, 09:58 PM Lol dks still pissed that the npc drivers in a GRAND THEFT AUTO GAME aren’t able to obey the rules of left turn yielding Maybe they will fix it in gta 6 my guy run2pee 11-09-2018, 01:04 PM Put off the final battle with king koopa in mario odyssey for like a year b/c was sad to see such a fun game end after a swift like only like 25 hrs or so Had judged it to be a bit of a ripoff in terms of content, and also way too easy af; was really feeling bitter about mario odyssey But now bowsers dead and omg now it turns out it was just a false ending: there’s like a bunch new platforming areas unlocked in the old worlds, with much greater more difficulty, and like omg like 10,0099,0,0039990.389 more moons to collect, which will open even MORE worlds, gosh! So glad i decided to kill koopa finally. Still don’t buy it’s a 9/10 3d mario yet, but definitely had judged it prematurely run2pee 11-09-2018, 11:15 PM I take it back, at least a little bit, about the rockstar npcs complaint i made earlier Friekin spent, like, at least like several minutes watching a blacksmith start his day in r d redempt last nite, was ENGROSSED and IMMERSED af yall Games good. Workin for the snake oil dude now or something Disco King 11-09-2018, 11:20 PM One complaint I have about the game is that combat is made harder by the fact that it's hard to even see those goons against the backdrop when they are far away and shooting at you. Can't even tell where the bullets are coming from. I get that it wouldn't make sense for a Western simulator to go through route of every other game these days and let you see bad guys through walls and all that shit, but at least design them so they stand out a bit, instead of being brown and grey blobs against a brown and grey background. The problem isn't even the graphics, which are really good, especially for an eight-year-old game made backward compatible on a newer system. It's more of a design issur. redbreegull 11-09-2018, 11:52 PM Are you having an issue when it is night? I don't recall it being especially difficult to pick out the enemies from a distance but it's been awhile since I played. RDR2 indicates what direction you are taking fire from as well but I can't recall if that was a feature in the first game Yeah, the first game doesn't have that feature that tells you what direction you're taking damage from that a lot of games have these days. I usually favour minimalistic HUDs anyway, but it would probably help in this game. It is worse at night. Sometimes, the problem is telling friendly NPCs from hostile ones, especially when you're fighting a gang that has taken hostages or something. Speaking of Rockstar games, I recently screwed up my L.A. Noire save file by saving a replay file over my main campaign file. I thought that since I was replaying the latest case, I would be able to continue the story from there, but replay files don't let you progress to the next case after they are done. They just take you back to the main menu. So, if there's no main campaign file, you can't progress. You'd think the game would tell you this, or would make it impossible to overwrite a main story file with a replay file or something. It sucks because I was in the middle of the Vice desk, and now I have to start from scratch again. On the bright side, there are benefits from starting from scratch. I had forgotten a lot of the plot details from the earlier cases, and playing it from the beginning lets me see how the story fits together and remember who the recurring characters are a bit better. Didn't even notice that the partner from the Homicide desk shows up in the first patrol case. I always found it funny how the Homicide desk isn't even grand finale, because I kept on thinking "how are they going to follow up this serial-killer murder mystery with some arson stories?" And I know they are building up to something with the Vice partner, because of how he kept on showing up earlier, with all that foreshadowing about his corruption. So, the "corrupt gang-involved cop" story isn't even the finale, either. There's gotta be some big twist to the arson one in order to justify it taking place after both the homicide and vice ones, so I look forward to getting there and seeing what it is. redbreegull 11-10-2018, 10:48 PM Yeah, the first game doesn't have that feature that tells you what direction you're taking damage from that a lot of games have these days. The story in LA Noire is so great and the characters are done so well. That really sucks about your save file, but the game is absolutely worth finishing. I think I played it through 3 or 4 times and each time I picked up on new stuff Disco King 11-10-2018, 11:35 PM Yeah, fucking up my save file kinda has some silver lining. I don't finish games very quickly, so I was playing through Noire slowly enough that I would forget most of the details. Playing it all again from the start, and playing through it more consistently than I was on my fucked-up playthrough, is making me appreciate the story even more. redbreegull 11-11-2018, 12:07 AM As for a plot twist. Shaking trees gets fucken old, and i can only really game in the dead of night so the real world clock is kinda bummer) Okami HD (never finished this on the Wii, forgot how supremely unfunny/irritating is the insect pal and the handholding for the puzzles is like OMG FUCK OFFFFFF, plus also the combat is laughably easy to the extent of being a boring meaningless nuisance - have i even been hit once - but all that aside gosh it’s pretty to gape/vape at) Dead Cells (hmmm another one that got a lot of hype and i think im liking it but am i going to have to figure out all these stats and numbers on my own or does it even matter or what....but i will keep playing b/c it’s gorgeous and controls are reeeeeeally nice) Doom (2016) (holy crap this is wild, but i suck fux at fps heeeeeeeelp meeeeeeeeeee) The Messenger (so far so good, i dig gaiden and 8 bit artworks and this musics pumping reeeeeal nice) Earthbound (always and forever - in the desert outside fourside diggin diamonds, beatin #3 strongest moles) And red dead redemption (not the new one the prior one) if i ever get to use the couch/tv Fonzie 01-13-2019, 04:36 AM That’s a lotta games to be playing. run2pee 01-13-2019, 12:54 PM That’s a lotta games to be playing. I got the Castlevania Requiem pack on PS4 that has that and Symphony of the Night, which is the game I'd recommend to absolutely anybody who wants to try a CV game. Huge world, Super Metroidish exploration, hundreds of uniquely animated 2D enemies, beautiful atmosphere, not white-knuckle difficult like the older games, and one of the best soundtracks in all of videogaming. I've played it dozens of times and always come back. Watching the excellent Netflix series reminded me just how much I missed these games. :) run2pee 02-19-2019, 04:32 PM Cool, i need to try symph/night, everyone says it’s the GOAT of all time. Maybe i can download it to my PS3 or something, too bad it’s not on switch I’ve tried to get into the NES castlevanias but they’re friekin so punishing and something about the graphics and sprites is alienating to me. On paper im supposed to love castlevanias b/c it’s friekin monsters and whips and chains and sexy dudes with pecs and ladies with lipps butts/breasts etc just goin at it on your screen all the time. But i also tried a 3d one on PS3 and couldn’t get the hang of the whip combos and moves and one on my 3ds but just didn’t keep up with it, it was like weirdly anime or something and ridiculous storywise which put me off a bit Surely it will click for me someday and the time will be right but this is the one franchise i just can’t seem to claw my way into for some reason Shadaloo 02-19-2019, 05:50 PM Yeah, you pretty much jumped into the uncomfortable ends of the pool on both sides. The NES ones are cruel and unforgiving, and the DS titles are mostly fun but are ridiculously anime and dumb as fuck. I love them all for what they are but not every game is for everybody. Symphony is the one that paved the way for all the handheld GBA and DS games, and it had very little in the way of anime influence compared to what followed. It's also on the easy side, and the more you get through the game the more you can absolutely annihilate the hell out of everything with the right weapons. Pretty sure on PS3 as a downloadable (though I think only the PS1 original had the voice acting that was so hilariously bad it became legendary). Gotta say I'm personally a big fan of the first PS3 Lords of Shadow game. Being a reimagining, it pissed off a lot of purists but I loved the earnest attempt at a gothic horror vibe, influences from the 1992 film here and there, and it's just about the only CV that tried to have a plot. run2pee 02-23-2019, 11:15 PM That Feeling When.... Fantastic game, with a level of quality that every classic remake should aspire to (you paying attention Square Enix? This is the level of quality we're hoping for from the long-gestating Final Fantasy VII remake, whenever they decide to drop that). I got it for the PS4 but I kinda wish I bought it for the PC cos my PC has more horsepower (i.e.: fewer frame rate drops). The game made me jump a few times, too; it's legit scary at times.
