View Full Version : My bike has been my main whip lately
Bread Regal 08-26-2015, 11:08 PM Since my car finally gave up the ghost, I've been riding my bike everywhere for the past two weeks or so.
i'm amazed at how much my endurance has improved since i started. i can't say necessarily that i've been sleeping better or anything, but it is a good feeling seeing measurable changes in my own body.
any bike commuters here?
Bread Regal 08-26-2015, 11:09 PM bicycle, not motorbike in case that wasn't clear.
wHATcOLOR 08-26-2015, 11:15 PM in my initial read I assumed motorbike
cyclists get hit all the time by cars in this city, I'm too fearful of that to own a bike.. but I definitely get the appeal!
is this like a 10 speed or a 21 speed? or a single gear?
Bread Regal 08-26-2015, 11:22 PM single fixed gear road bike. it's only fixed gear because i neglected the bike outside for many months, and the rear wheel no longer spins independently of the pedals. i.e. can't coast. so my legs are pumping constantly. it's quite a workout!
wHATcOLOR 08-26-2015, 11:31 PM How does that work when you need to slow down quickly?
This may be a super dumb question I realize
Bread Regal 08-26-2015, 11:35 PM it still has breaks
wHATcOLOR 08-26-2015, 11:36 PM There we go. I thought about that just after I submitted

dreams of glass 08-27-2015, 01:10 AM been biking it since last October, haven't driven a car at all.
there was a pretty rapid body transformation (i.e. I lost a bunch of weight) that people noticed and commented on, which felt good and gave me motivation to continue.

avian chaos 08-27-2015, 03:53 PM What happens if you stop pedaling but don't use your breaks? Do you just fly forward?
I used to ride my bike everywhere when I lived in a more neighborhood-y neighborhood that was across town from all my friends. I miss it, but most places I go these days are only a few blocks away so I just walk. I can feel my bones turning to jelly.
I haven't had a bicycle all summer. I miss it so much. Next spring I shall return to the streets of KC.
yo soy el mejor 08-27-2015, 04:45 PM i refuse to ride my bike in chicago. actually, i sold my bike because i never rode it. i was hit twice in texas - once going home from work and another time going to target. one guy didn't look before switching lanes and knocked me off the road and another ran through a light that had just turned red and hit me. that was the worst because he was going mighty fast and i flew over the handlebars and into the intersection and hit my shoulder then head on the pavement. luckily his license plate fell off but i have no idea what happened to the guy because i was so out of it but refusing medical help cause i didn't want the bill. my fucked up bike and i got a ride back home to my apartment.
chicago drivers are crazier, stupider, and ruder so i really have never felt safe riding here. too bad. it's a great workout and legs be lookin' good.
avian chaos 08-27-2015, 07:06 PM Dude, Chicago is the #1 place I would want to ride a bike. That shit is flatter than a witch's tit.

the heat/humidity is really something. i try to avoid going out between 11 and 3-ish because the heat index is like, lethal.
but, otherwise it's nice. i ride on the sidewalk if i think it's too unsafe to ride on the road. alafaya has a bike lane, but fuck that shit.

i'm not sure what you're asking. the pedals just keep going, so your feet do too, unless you want to get your calves all bruised up (which mine already are).

sppunk 08-27-2015, 08:46 PM I wish I could bike.
MyOneAndOnly 08-28-2015, 09:29 AM I recently bought a new bike for commuting. my commuter has a rear rack and bags for cargo. I've been riding it around town quite a bit.
Dogfighter28 08-28-2015, 09:53 AM Atlanta is statistically the most dangerous city for pedestrians. I'm thinking bikes probably have a similar rank. I've seen only one bike lane and it only goes for a couple of blocks.
As much as I'd like to get around that way, I don't want to take that risk. And certainly it's not safe to ride at night.
I'd like to take up mountain biking, though. North Georgia is gorgeous. Anyone have tips for getting started with that hobby?
duovamp 08-28-2015, 09:57 AM Adults don't ride bicycles.
Cool As Ice Cream 08-28-2015, 10:08 AM my gears are fucked. my chain skips all the time now. i have to be very careful not to use too much power on the pedals, because i could hurt myself if it skips at that moment. really annoying.
not sure if i should try to get it fixed (possibly expensive), or get a new bike.
this one is old. it has more issues.

probably just needs a new derailleur cable and an adjustment. That's a cheap fix.

I'm lucky. my city is most of the way through installing a hundred miles of bike lanes which makes it easy to get around. it sure feels safer than darting in and out of traffic.
Rairun 08-28-2015, 10:58 AM I've been cycling to work every day for the past 3 years now. It's just 3 miles each way, though, and only a short stretch on the actual road (there's a dedicated cycle lane on the sidewalk). I cycle to the city center sometimes too, but I don't need to go there very often.

Bread Regal 08-29-2015, 12:39 PM hey scotty, do you do maintenance and repairs on your own bike? mine could use a lot of work and i need a little advice on what repairs i can do while minimizing the cost:benefit ratio.

I do most of it myself.
what city do you live in? there are a lot of cities that have bike co-ops or community repair shops where you can get free use of tools and sometimes even free help with repairs. We have one here like that. anybody can roll in and ask for help doing repairs. sometimes they even have parts for free or cheap.
Cool As Ice Cream 09-02-2015, 03:24 AM but i don't want to talk to hippies or let them touch my bicycle.
vixnix 09-02-2015, 03:48 AM Lol sure, your old bicycle with lots of issues that you're thinking about replacing is too good for hippies to touch, huh. C'mob CAIC you big grump why don't you live a little

run2pee 09-02-2015, 04:30 PM I fucken love2bike I would do it all the time if I could. Unfortunately work now is like 40 miles away down a rural 4-laner with debris-strewn shoulders and the crankiest craziest drivers doin like 80-90 mph. I don't think I could bike it safely (or in less than several hours).
But man I love pumpin down the trails on nights n weekends. We have a gorgeous trail that runs thru the state converted from an old railway. Always see some kickas birds and animals.
run2pee 09-02-2015, 04:31 PM This summer it sucked though there were thunderstorms like everyday from May to probably early Aug so I barely got to ride

I was thinking about this and man...it must be supes flat where u live cause holy shit, some of the hills round here would have those pedals spinnin so fast they'd damn near chop your legs right off!
I hope u can get it fixed soon, that sounds rather dangerous in any event
ohnoitsbonnie 09-03-2015, 05:33 PM It's Florida. It's below sea level as it is. And what did CAIC say?
Bread Regal 09-03-2015, 08:07 PM there are more than a few hills around here. nothing extreme, but enough to get me out of the saddle halfway up. also i haven't fallen off this bike and i don't really want to anytime soon, so i try not to go down too fast.
reprise85 09-03-2015, 08:54 PM there are absolutely no hills here in South FL. When I moved to Louisiana when I was 15 it was like another planet.

I know, it's the worst user name. But I feel it could also be, like, a perverse badge of honor to be named after what's universally acknowledged as one of the worst bill songs in history. Maybe?

pale_princess 10-11-2015, 09:42 AM I used to commute via bike all the time. Where I live in regards to where I work would be a fun bike to work since it's all downhill but biking home uphill after a long day would be a mess. I use my bike from time to time. Wish I had it in me to use it like I used to but what ya gonna do!
MyOneAndOnly 10-11-2015, 09:43 AM got this surly 29er+ this summer. did a lot of upgrades including velocity dually wheels.

thanks! the cross bike has garbage components, but it was cheap and i really like the look of the frame. hopefully i can ride it for a year or two before upgrading the parts, but i'll probably do it next summer since i'm kind of addicted to senseless upgrades.
this is all being funded by selling my camera gear. i made a killing on exchange selling it to the states. $3800 USD = $4950 CAD i had used my camera once in the last two years, so it didn't make sense to keep it. can always get another one down the road if i get the bug again.

That looks really badass. And heavy. You must have strong legs.
Mooney 10-11-2015, 10:22 AM not just the weight, but you have the extra rolling resistance of super wide tires to overcome. i don't really understand fat bikes. unless you are trying to bike in loose sand or snow.
