I feel lucky to have experienced a place like this. Before reddit and 4chan and social media homogenized the Internet, communities had the potential to evolve independently, and connect people to each other in a really unique way. Out here in the cyber-balkans, things get a little weird and I like that.

Anyone been a part of other boards that have existed for as long as this place, with mostly steady membership of the same people, members fucking each other, uniquely encapsulated board culture, etc? I feel like it must be rare for someone to pay to keep a board from the year 2000 open this long.

I mean... hipinion? I think that counts. There must be other band ones.

But I agree, netphoria is its own little world and it's really interesting for it.

Yeah, HPN started when it was the Pitchfork board, and quite a few of them have history/meet ups/IRL drama, etc.

I'm sure there are others, we just don't know about it. I'd love to read some long form article about any other ones, though, especially if there is any drama or IRL crime involved.

I've had accounts at a couple other forums for a long time

theforce.net forums since 2001
gloriousnoise.com since 2001

There's also a cycling board that I've been a member of since the late 90s.

i dunno if Something Awful still does their Weekend Web feature... but a lot of those featured forums would pass for that category. except those were way more batshit/stupid than netphoria could ever be

i'd say there's as many "netphorias" as there are things to be culty about, i think most of it though would have to be established before social media though. I'd be kinda surprised if there was an MB for stuff like game of thrones tv show but not if there was one for song of ice and fire does that make sense

i've been on xmen boards, baldur's gate boards, and even an arcanum board. Arcanum was a pretty obscure steampunk game from the 90s that was made by a few of the creators of Fallout.

mickey you're trolling people through rep on a site you've been essentially banned from so if you want to talk about sad...
