Answering for Europe: never heard of them before. That one started off like some sappy stuff I actually enjoy (Starsailor or I am Kloot - the whiney stuff people love to make fun of), but the vocal melody is kinda... awful. dadadada *DA-hightnotepuke*.

How can you resist the uplifting chorus of "It's a good life if you don't weaken"?

"For a good life we just might have to weaken
And find somewhere to go
Go somewhere we're needed
Find somewhere to grow
Grow somewhere we're needed"

Beautiful stuff.

Or how can you not like the bridge in "Bobycaygeon" at the 2:04 mark that the song busts into totally unexpectedly?

This is one of those bands that takes a few listens to enjoy

errrt, wrong. the 90s you speak of was, in fact, a total bullshit generation of music where garbage started to get pumped out and copied to a greater extent. the entire grunge movement was MTV branding that resulted in an entire generation thinking that STP was a classic band with lots of talent and they were being individuals and exploring freedom by wearing doc martins, flannel and chain wallets

I mean yeah, some of the electronica shit that's all of the rage nowadays is pretty cool. I even heard one of those new Robin songs come on at the grocery store I work at and was digging it. all the rage these days criminy

it's robyn and she's with royksopp which is a norwedgian edm duo who she's worked with before. i haven't even listened to any of it yet and i already know more about it than you. do you see the disconnect? you speak with authority about "today's music" and then show how little you know about it, which is basically nothing. people haven't called it electronica since 1998

when is that going to sink in?

Incorrect. They just don't get praised or recognised on the same level. Everyone has already made up their minds that certain artists are legends, that their greatness cannot be surpassed, that they can't be fucked with, and the idea of that status gets handed down to each generation of music listeners.

I really liked 90's rock. But then you realize it was just an extension of 80's rock in a watered down form once you know a little more about music.

It's pretty hard for a new band to compete against 50+ years of great music

Yeah that's true. But I think back then bands kept on building off of the past bands sounds and kept on pushing the boundaries and took the music in new directions. So general "rock music" (for lack of a better term) kept on evolving and there was always artists building upon the sounds from the bands they idolized.

Black Sabbath really doesn't do much for me now, but can you imagine how that shit must have sounded when you first heard it in 1970 or whenever? It would have knocked you right on your ass.

Each decade from like the 50's to the 90's had it's rock icons and important influential bands who broke thru to enjoy success. What bands have made a cultural impact in the 2000's? Coldplay, fucking Kings of Leon? It's pathetic... truly pathetic.

fuzzyroes
07-25-2014, 06:40 AM
Of course in the 90's for every Soundgarden there was 5 Hootie and the Blowfishes. It's been like that in every decade... But the cream of the crop still rose to the top... No good bands are rising to the top these days.

Even the "indie" culture is fucking pathetic. Vampire Weekend, Sleigh Bells, Grizzly Bear? Gimme a break.

Elphenor
07-25-2014, 06:47 AM
I don't feel like anyone in 90's Rock was really pushing anything though.
They were just taking all these 80's genres and combining them.
And then MTV called it "grunge"

fuzzyroes
07-25-2014, 06:58 AM
Yeah, but you still got some genuine, awesome music out of it.

Look, every genre ever that's made an impact was influenced by the music that's came before it. I don't think that necessarily cheapens it at all. It's only cheap when a band isn't influenced but is shamelessly aping another band. That's another story.

Obviously bands like Nirvana and Weezer were extremely influenced by the Pixies and it's clear in their sound, but really, both of those bands are still tremendously different than the Pixies.

fuzzyroes
07-25-2014, 07:01 AM
And the bands that made it big in the 90's had their ear to the pulse of what was going on and were all artists who were obviously into and influenced by some really good music... If they weren't the 90's would have just been more artists like the plethora of cookie cutter hair-metal bands that were out in the 80's and in the very early 90's.

Elphenor
07-25-2014, 07:03 AM
The thing with popular 90's Rock is that it was more retro than anything. It wasn't a "movement" like Punk.

What Nirvana and Weezer did was awesome and all but it was more emulation than it was innovation.

Elphenor
07-25-2014, 07:05 AM
Music from the 90's that could be considered pretty innovative would be like MBV

fuzzyroes
07-25-2014, 07:30 AM
I see what you're saying... But the same thing can be said about punk... Bands playing simple fast songs with powerchords. the Who was doing that shit in the 60's. And it's impossible not to hear the Beatles and surf-pop influences in bands like the Ramones.

Elphenor
07-25-2014, 07:34 AM
It's really not the same thing though.

Elphenor
07-25-2014, 07:39 AM

The 90's WAS a golden age... Especially when you compare it to the 2000's and the 2010's (so far)....

The 90's was the last decade that had an influx of fantastic bands... There hasn't been any outbreak of good bands in like 20 years, so I'd say it was pretty golden back then

This one time I was in some Pita Pit store being served by this guy probably in his 50's, and while he was assembling my sandwich I heard a couple of songs by The Who played back to back on their radio. I made a comment like "This radio station sure loves The Who" and he said "I'm surprised you recognised it, they're a bit before your time". I was wearing an Unknown Pleasures shirt at the time.

Fuzzyroes is to the 80's and 90's what that guy is to the 60's and 70's.

Almost all of my favorite bands formed in the 80s and got bigger in the 90s...does that make me hipster?

I genuinely love that period of music history but I enjoy some new bands that take what I like to a new level.

I was like the only kid in high school that was listening to Soundgarden but I wasn't posin' or rebeling against the current music at the time. I just identified with those bands in a weird way and I truly loved them.

Obviously there was tons of shit like Seven Mary Three and crap like that, but I never listened to any of that shit so it wasn't ever really relevant to me.

heh... riiiiiiiiiiiighhhhhhhhhht. I was listening to the golden ages of the 90's when Elhpy wasn't even a jizz stain on his fathers trousers

this makes very little sense by the way, elph wouldn't ever be a "jizz stain" because that sperm wouldn't fertilize an egg. "wasn't even" is a confusing tense here and i'm not sure what this is supposed to mean at any level

it's funny how the two greatest sports victories in my fandom also coincided with two netphorian events

giants not only made the playoffs but won the superbowl which resulted in a bananaban
spurs not only won the finals but beat the everloving shit out of miami, proving fuzzy wrong about how the NBA is fixed

What happened to banana anyway?

I read an old school thread and the amount of douchebaggery actually had me in awe. I didn't realize it could translate that well through text. They should bring him back.

Jesus Trots, that song sucks ass. Sounds like something I would have played in my band when I was 14 years old.

It's actually fairly incredible that Rammstein enjoyed so much North American success. When does a band or artist ever achieve huge mainstream success over here when they sing in a different language?

That thread isn't relevant to my topic.

This is a discussion where people discuss and share their all time favorite music videos.

Now buzz off already. You're like one of those yappy little dogs, constantly annoying people by nipping at their heels.

Someone on the O-board introduced me to it. It's really good post-punk that wasn't made over a decade before I was born.

I highly recommend checking it out.

Bloc Partys one of my favorite bands of the "new millennium".

I reckon that these guys are a little too current for your interests since you're into all of these ancient dinosaur bands
