I like it better than The Woods for sure. Like each of their previous albums, though, I think I'll need many listens to decide where it ranks for me in their discography.

Band sucks. What a gimmick, all women singing bad songs abt feminism and bein a victim. They cant even play their instruments. Obvs some affirmative action shit. Comedians shouldnt pretend to be musicians its pathetic. so you couldnt have a man in the band? Thats what i call discrimination #gamergate

Not sure if srs, but I agree. They sound like a shittier Go-Go's. Corin Tucker's voice is like nails on a chalkboard and Carrie Brownstein tries way too hard with her angular guitar playing and windmills and kicks.

So they're not worth checking out? I need some new music to listen to and I was considering checking out what all the fuss is about. I checked out some songs on youtube and they all seem pretty amateur... In a non charming way.

not sure what to make of this one, so far it doesn't do much at all for me.
probably haven't heard it often enough yet.

but I love the last track - Fade. and Bury Our Friends.

in (un)related news: Marriages released the first single of their upcoming album.
it's fantastic.

i'm really ambivalent about this album, ultimately this is the jagged, ugly side of SK that i never really liked that much that much

so i might even go like

WOODS
DIG ME OUT
AHOTBO
ONE BEAT

then it's a tossup between this and call the dr. i don't like the debut at all

i still haven't listened to the hot rock or maybe i did and i don't remember it

Someone doesn't like that thing that you all like...quick, lynch the offender! We must neg rep him at once, that'll show him to not come round here having an opinion. Suck it scotty, SK sucks...even their band name sounds nauseatingly indie. Bunch of try-hards. Breeders are a much better band. Hell, even Veruca Salt was better.

for me it goes:

1. Dig Me Out
2. AHOTBO
3. One Beat
4. Sleater-Kinney
5. The Hot Rock
6. Call the Doctor
7. Woods

The Woods just never clicked for me. Although listening to it again this week for the first time in a long time I just can't figure out why. I do like their more "jagged" sound, though I wouldn't call it ugly at all.

On this one I'm liking Carrie's guitar work a lot. As usual the drumming is first rate and the bass playing is solid. Corin's voice is better, IMO, than it was in the 90s.

Best songs for me so far are:

Fangless
Surface Envy
A New Wave
No Cities To Love

SK doesnt have a bass player bruh

scottytheoneand
01-23-2015, 05:08 PM
I believe most of this album has a bass track. Its pretty clear on a number of songs and it sits well under both guitars. Which was my meaning. It doesn't sound out of place. Live they typically are just a three piece with two guitars.

On many of their older tracks Corin or Carrie sometimes play a defacto bass part on their 6 strings, depending on who is playing lead.

Trotskilicious
01-23-2015, 06:29 PM
they are playing 3 tuned down guitars, they added a guitarist for the tour with the quote "dont worry we didnt add a bass player."

So shut the fuck up, scotty!

scottytheoneand

You can't just play the bottom string on a regular guitar and pretend it's the bass. That reminds me of that Flight of the Conchords where they had to sell their instruments and they still did gigs miming their parts. Anyway, even if you turn the guitar down some it still won't work as a bass. You could get it down to the range of a baritone guitar, which only shitheads play, but it's not a bass guitar that can give you disco dump.

TuralyonW3
01-23-2015, 10:14 PM

Poots

raise your hand if this has happened to you:

You go into a bar to watch a band play, the waitress has just brought you a beer, and the guitar guy plugs in a baritone guitar and you mutter "what a fucking shithead" and you throw $5 on the table and kill the beer and walk out.

Trotskilicious

SK isnt calling anything a bass, they dont have a bass guitar. Its obviously deliberate. Scot is the only person who is confused

Its better not to have a bass player if theyre only gonna play root anyway, but in general I still find it harder to enjoy a band that has no bass. It's like that. I like my conventions.

Most of the early Pumpkins stuff is just playing the root. If the guitars are going apeshit (e.g. all of the Pumpkins shit) the bass pretty much has to anchor it all or you will go into Jazz Odyssey.

scottytheoneand
01-24-2015, 11:16 AM
yeah, I'm sure I'm mistaken. But listening to Fangless or during the verses on Bury Our Friends, for example, it soulds like a bass playing and not just another guitar.

great album either way. I can't think of another band in recent years that took such a long break or even stayed together that long and put out such a good album.

yeah they're basslines written by a guitarist.... Nothing shall be played that might overshadow the guitars. though there are some more interesting ones here and there. I got into pumpkins around the time i first started playing and i found it a bit disappointing their songs were not that interesting to play on bass.

when you've got two guitars, you've got a rhythm player to anchor it anyway. Unless both are going apeshit.

True, it can be done, but I don't think Billy gives much of a shit for adventurous bass parts. The bass was just following his chords to make his guitar sound ultra fat.

yo soy you should start making a series of youtube videos where you do sign language against a song while it's playing (and the sign language is the lyrics of the song in case that was not clear).

I think I finally "get" Sleater Kinney - took only 20 years, and one concert.
how can you not tour for so long, and then kill it like that? I'm in love with these ladies now.

and this album is like a strange trick-box: after the first listen I was underwhelmed, then it creeps up on you, and now I wonder why on earth I didn't hear right away how great these songs are.

I dig the vibe and the songwriting but their vocals are screechy which has made it hard for me to dig into their catalog.
