I can't decide if hair metal or new jack swing is the all time worst genre of music. The mid to late 80s was truly a terrible time for popular mainstream music.

Disliking new jack swing and metal
true markers of a dull sour puss personality

Even with hair metal I can find a few small redeeming things. I actually like Panama and Hot For Teacher by Van Halen. Everything else in the genre that I've heard I've found to be horrible. But with New Jack Swing there is just nothing redeemable at all. It's the most shallow vapid empty corny music I've heard.

I thought you were talking about electro swing. Now that's a shitty genre.

slunken
01-16-2015, 08:54 PM
what does anyone even mean by 'worst genre'

i mean everything has its highs and lows and i know what genres i like the best that but that doesn't mean any other genre is somehow lesser because of that

are you talking about outdated genres, or laughably faddish genres, or dead or retired genres, or what?

Catherine Wheel

Synth pop is outdated too but it has substance and depth. New Jack Swing is just all style over substance. There is nothing beneath the surface with it. It's pure entertainment with no pretense of being artistic.

Pretty much all time periods are equal in that most of the mainstream was embarrassing shit

The music that's popular now seems way more embarrassing to me than New Jack

This seems like a case of thinking white music is smarter than black music idk

No I like contemporary R&b from time to time. And I like neo soul too although it's not what I find myself listening to these days. I just think in general that the 80s was the worst period for black music.

Nerdcore rap is my nominee

The exploding boy

I dont know what it is but i can pretty much guess just by the name and yeah it sounds like it.

But also...can that really be called a genre? I refuse to accept new so called genre unless one can name more than ten reasonably known artists who fit the definition. Like Witch House. It might be on wikipedia but it's not a genre.

"I dont like rap at all but i like this. Its great, youd love it brendan. Its a rap abt optimus prime palying magic the gathering isnt it hilarious?"

"Theres so many grammatical errors in regular rap but MC DM has a rap abt that. You gotta hear it."

I prefer nerd rap to jackoff backpacker rap like Sage Francis and Buck 65 and shit.

"I like rap music but I don't like all that stuff about bitches and murdering people" = "I like metal but I can't stand the screaming"

Sonic Johnny

Also if we have to nominate a worst genre of music ever I reckon probably Gabber

Sonic Johnny
01-16-2015, 11:11 PM
Also who gives a fuck about popular mainstream music

People who are grown up enough to assess music based on if they enjoy it or not, not based on how many other people enjoy it.

I disagree. Nerd culture in jokes and references are fucking annoying and generally infantile.

"I like rap music but I don't like all that stuff about bitches and murdering people" = "I like metal but I can't stand the screaming"

I disagree.

Also, was going to get inquire about "gabber" but I am slightly afraid my world will be flipped upside down (in a bad way)

I'm sure a non-chalant google search will get the best of me within the next hour or so, tho :(

Imagine if someone who liked awful rave music listened to Napalm Death and totally missed the point

"I like rap music but I don't like all that stuff about bitches and murdering people" = "I like metal but I can't stand the screaming"

Extremely valid reason not to like (some) rap though. And it's not like all rap is about bitches and murdering people. Are you saying it's an essential component of rap? Because it sure isnt.

Also kind of a bad analogy.

your analogy would work if you said i like rap but i don't like all the spoken lyrics

The exploding boy

Btw as much as i would someday like to slap slunken across the face at least once for all the videos that start upon opening threads, this combination of Burroughs and hot for teacher playing at the same time somehow works. I think someone should take a a bunch of Burroughs readings and put them over 1984.

I actually don't consider Montell Jordan's song This Is How We Do It to be a good example of New Jack Swing. To me it's more hip hop soul. Something similar to Jodeci. And when it came out new jack swing had pretty much died out.
