Bailter Space - 'New Man' (1987)

super funky track from a band who would become a heavy/shoegaze band during later years. And by later years, i mean pretty much the year after this single was released.

I still think it's ok for most ppl to blend NZ and Aussie pop into one category. I mean I get it , you being from there. But shit even those record stores you can find aussie pop just as easily whereas it's rare in the rest of the world.

I realized recently I need to start getting more foreign import style releases. I get new stuff from Belgium and uk regularly but that's as far as it stretches.

i've always felt that Aussie pop was more produced, more 'grand' if you like. bands like Aussie Crawl and the Church, just to pick two, sounded pretty polished, whereas NZ bands of the time were generally a bit more raw.

The Bats are one of the more boring bands to emerge out of NZ during the 80's. that said, i don't mind them too much

I love the bats. I didn't discover them until I was at uni in dunedin in 2002.

I'd gone to arc cafe to hear demarnia lloyd play, after liking cloud boy's release the year before, and happened to get sucked into a trivia night quiz that was running beforehand, with a bunch of nz music nerds who kept talking about this band called the bats that i'd never heard of. That was the same year I heard my first david kilgour track, high on nitrous oxide. oh the good old days. Dunedin could be a great place...I'm going to be back there in a few weeks actually...will have to see if I can track the arc recording down, that had the David Kilgour track on it - it had a terrific recipe in it, for a vegan salad - watercress, roasted sweet potato & couscous, with a mustard, lemon & tahini dressing....

Arc was a lovely little place still, in 2002. $2 pints on a tuesday night! Hippies the city over made the pilgrimage. Looks like it hit the skids shortly after, though...
