Pretty great honor. I remember at the time plenty of people figured Green Day would be just a flash in the pan.

Other inductees include: Stevie Ray Vaughn, Lou Reed and Joan Jett

Green Days been one of the top grossing Rock acts over the last 20 years. I'm pretty sure American Idiot is right up there as far as sales go for Rock artists in the last 10 years.

They're one of the few bands from the 90's that still sell out arenas. You really don't know 2 shits about music do you?

Not in HOF: the Cure, Kraftwerk, MC5, the New York Dolls.

I feel like getting a spot in the HoF is actually an insult. I'd much rather be mentioned with the bands that didn't get in for the most part. It's almost a sign that you've become safe enough for the masses to accept you

Well it is called the hall of fame

So, the Hall really does have a lot to do with mainstream success... Whether some purist fans like it or not.

It is what it is, it's not for everyone. But it's still a tremendous honor for a lot of artists.

green day was the band i learned to play guitar to. my skill level stopped somewhere between them and nirvana.

I learned to play bass to Green Day. I moved on later though..actually i felt i had already moved on from green day by the time i was playing along their records (i was 17/18 then) but i just really liked those basslines and its not like i had tons of music to play along to back then so i had to learn to something. Also this was fast paced so it was nice to learn uptempo playing.. I pretty much only bought Nimrod to see if there were songs worth learning. Sadly this would start going downhill bass wise form this record on.

I cant' really deny Dookie (and 1039 and kerplunk) because it was a records i listened to during a phase of my teens even if you know...i never lsiten to them. Also in terms of pop punk, worse shit was yet to come. Its funny but GD almost looks legit now compared to bands like Blink 182 and sum 41 and all this shit. The thing is they were about to maybe age gracefully you know in the early 2000s and then they did American Idiot and pretended they were kinda emo (look wise) and were suddenly hipper with the kids than ever and i just had to roll my eyes because that's when I knew they were not gonna redeem themselves in older age, just gonna keep on pretending they're snotty kids. And i mean oh but they're tackling like political punk now! Yeah in the lamest way possible...

The exploding boy
12-17-2014, 03:06 PM
Like i'm convinced they would have faded into obscurity had it not been for suddenly wearing eye liner and dying their hair black. This is the move that saved their career. Nobody would have cared about American Idiot otherwise.

Yeah, you have a point. I've read that a lot of the record executives figured that the writing was on the wall as far as Green Days popularity was concerned after the Warning album kind of flopped.

Their image was definitely an important factor for their resurgence during American Idiot, but most importantly: they had the music to back it up.

People shit on American Idiot like Green Day was exploiting popular opinion in the W. Bush era, but I distinctly remember that no one was saying the kind of shit they did at the time the album came out. It's only post mortem with foggy hindsight that we can say "fuck Bush" and all that was cliche.

Sure they weren't as popular as ever, but they'd had "Good Riddance" and "Minority" on the last two albums. Those were pretty freaking big hits.

I have no personal connection to the band other than liking their music, but I feel the need to defend their "image" crisis. When Corgan fails to effectively market his music everyone here jumps all over it. What Green Day did was smart. They tapped into their influences, into a different side of them that no one had heard coming from Green Day music before. And part of that influence was the image and political culture of punk music in the 70's. You'd figure no one had ever heard of a guy named Joe Strummer?

Homage, ripoff, whatever you want to call it, it was a smart thing to do and it worked. It didn't feel forced to me.

I used to love Green Day, but nowadays the only two albums I can really listen to are 'Dookie' and 'American Idiot', and they happen to be their best sellers. When I was a teenager 'Insomniac' was my favourite, and I rated Nimrod. 'Kerplunk!' had '2,000 Light Years Away,' a song that will always mean a lot to me. I liked the 'Stop, Drop, Roll' album they put out under the 'Foxboro Hot Tubs' moniker. Will have to give that another listen, I think.

I'm a grown man. This romanticized idea of "punk" being a cool life style is ridiculous.

do you repeat the line "I'm a grown man" to convince yourself?
just asking, I'm curious why you do it, you seem desperate that people perceive you as "a man."

you want to tell "the kids" what music is worth listening to - although there are only a few posters on here who are a few years younger than you and already have a broad taste in music, while you are 28 going on 12, call your band monkey piss and a halfassed joke picture "a promotion picture for my band", make a living by gambling and want other adults to do the same, post about NOFX, green day or whatever else "grown men" hardly care for, all that on a messageboard whenever you are completely drunk or stoned.

don't get me wrong, obviously I do it, too, but what's up with this grown man talk? have some guys (or girls) repeatedly made fun of you that you are an immature teenager at heart or something?

and for you laughing at punk - I respect a bunch of folks in their late 40ies and 50ies as "grown men" - because they are, and they still live the "punk lifestyle", for better or worse, because that's who they are. who are you to decide what concept of living is ridiculous? how is the wallstreet banker lifestlye of a 40 year old any less ridiculous? or your own lifestyle?

I'm a grown man. This romanticized idea of "punk" being a cool life style is ridiculous.

i just figure it's being against the status quo, sometimes just for the sake of being against the status quo. but you can dismiss it if you like. you glorify grunge culture to the point of being a walking parody of it

by the way if you're a grown man you certainly don't act like it. you're a grown teenager maybe

Johnny Rottens so "punk" with his huge wealth, his big mansion and his lavish lifestyle.

by the way you gonna back this up ? i mean do you know if he has a big mansion ? a "lavish" lifestyle, which is what most of your heroes live

Stranded...lost inside myself
My own worst friend
My own closest enemy
I'm Branded...maladjusted
Never trusted anyone
Let alone myself

I must insist
On being a pessimist
I'm a loner in a catastrophic mind

Elected the rejected
I perfected the science of the idiot
No meaning...no healing
Self loathing freak and introverted deviot

I must insist
On being a pessimist

Stranded...lost inside myself

Worst years of my life are the last three by far. and if i had to name others, i coud pick quite a few before i'd pick 14 to 17.

Between teenage suffering and adult suffering, no comparison...the earlier was a breeze looking back. I cried and hit things a lot and had pathetic stupid daydreams about shooting up the school. Meh. puperty drama aside, once suicide rates aren't just fascinating statistics, but people in your life off themselves or pass away, and the shit you have to deal with is more serious than school bullying, the worst teenage years seem like an alternate universe. at least to me they do. and then you start listening to Wagner and drink more than your liver can handle in the long run (or smoke more than your lungs can handle, or both.) fantastic!

Like I think I might have been less fucked and depressed if I wouldn't have been able to drink and smoke and go to clubs as a teen and had woken up in one pub toilet less. Neither of us can know, though.

as for working to pay your dealer - pretty much, for a lot of people. that gets seriously old though after a while - and is common knowledge, too. you work get stoned to forget how you spend your day and then hit repeat, ever damn day. it is most definitely bullshit.
I had this tipsy panic for a few years in my 20ies, I didn't drink at all.
then I reacted similar to weed eventually. it sorted itself out, kind of, but I know a bunch of people who developed this sort of reaction somewhere in their twenties.

this goes too much into psycho talk, but you don't need the additional depression of hangovers and weed reduction to know what shit feels like when you touch it. (that doesn't translate well, does it.)

do you repeat the line "I'm a grown man" to convince yourself?
just asking, I'm curious why you do it, you seem desperate that people perceive you as "a man."

you want to tell "the kids" what music is worth listening to - although there are only a few posters on here who are a few years younger than you and already have a broad taste in music, while you are 28 going on 12, call your band monkey piss and a halfassed joke picture "a promotion picture for my band", make a living by gambling and want other adults to do the same, post about NOFX, green day or whatever else "grown men" hardly care for, all that on a messageboard whenever you are completely drunk or stoned.

don't get me wrong, obviously I do it, too, but what's up with this grown man talk? have some guys (or girls) repeatedly made fun of you that you are an immature teenager at heart or something?

and for you laughing at punk - I respect a bunch of folks in their late 40ies and 50ies as "grown men" - because they are, and they still live the "punk lifestyle", for better or worse, because that's who they are. who are you to decide what concept of living is ridiculous? how is the wallstreet banker lifestlye of a 40 year old any less ridiculous? or your own lifestyle?

You have no idea about my tastes of music. I like a very vast amount of artists... It's not my fault if people wanna zero in on the few acts that they deem "not worthy" or "childish".

As for you knowing adults in their 40's and 50's being proud of living a punk lifestyle: I can only laugh my ass off. They must be very, very simple people... To say the least.

It's the same reason that SP can go to Brazil and have huge mobs of people waiting for them like the Beatles.

Also, it's pretty funny that Pavementtunes refers to Punk by a bunch of kids with a certain hair-style:rofl:

I think the years 14-15 were terrible, because you're kinda just thrown to the wolves with the whole high-school thing. But by the time I was 16 I adjusted and then it was pretty much the funnest of times.

But yeah, being a teenager was actually pretty fucking sweet.

Well if your teenage years are shit, you're more than likely in for a shitshow in your adult life as well... Unless you strive hard for change... But people are lazy and usually don't bother with that.
