View Full Version : Billy's most under appreciated lyrics

Monuments to an Elegy is easily my favorite thing Billy's done since the Machinas. It finally sounds like he's making music for himself, even though it's a calculated "sampler" for radio as someone else on here said. still, it's honest and BRIEF - an SP album that's 33 minutes is pretty cool and long overdue. Whatever you think about the record though, I think pretty much everyone agrees the lyrics are non-lyrics & extremely repetitive. but his vocals sound great mostly and are mixed well so it's not really a big deal. also One and All is totally The Viper.

but reading a lot of people on here wishing Billy would write lyrics like he used to. honestly, i think something like BWBW or Jellybelly isn't any more lyrically advanced than Being Beige or One and All, it's just the attitude. for the first time in his career, BC actually sounds happy and never angry on MTAE.

what are some of your favorite SP1 lyrics that either get shit on or never discussed? i've always loved the desperation of the chorus of TOASE-

I
LIE
JUST TO BE REAL
AND I'D
DIE
JUST TO FEEL
WHY DO THE SAME OLD THINGS
KEEP ON HAPPENING?
BEYOND MY HOPES
THERE ARE NO FEELINGS

Zwan Mary Star of the Sea

Hell, he didn't sound angry on Oceania either.

And I completely disagree about BWBW. They're not fantastic lyrics but it's quite clear what he's singing about.

I feel joy
I feel just
Like a boy
You know I
Play with my toys

Nothing's really changed
I don't feel sad
You know I
Don't feel mad for my age
I'm happy just being

I feel joy
I feel just
Like a boy
And now I
Play with my noise
Nothing's really changed

I feel joy
I feel such
Happy joy
As a child I
Owned the noise

Wound

there you are
as you always were
in bathing light
and naked blur
you're a part of me
eternal wone
my grand design
and setting sun

if you wait, i will wait
taste, i will taste
if you love, i will love
run, i will run
to my last breath

last night i turned around and thought i saw myself turning
inside the strangest dream of life unloved and cities burning

awake in my arms
you cry unharmed
our age of the hours
when they still devour all

so take it all
i doubt if we
will know it's gone
cause we've been here
since time began
begged god awake
and make these plans

wound opens
reveal this broken man
and soon there's notions
of blood on his hands

if you wait, i will wait
taste, i will taste
if you love, i will love
run, i will run
to my last breath

last night i turned around, i thought i saw myself turning
last night i turned around and thought i watched the world ending
inside the crushing i felt a pang, the tide was turning

destroyed in the wake
the jealous ingrates
will tear this world down
to spite god above
with his own love
with his own love
if you wait
if you wait

if you wait, i will wait
taste, i will taste
if you love, i will love
run, i will run
to my last breath

That's a nice line, it seems almost out of place in Heavy Metal Machine.

fuck yes, wound is absolutely one of his best lyrics. it stands beautifully on its own. i love the acoustic demo lyrics too:

wound opens
reveal a broken man
soon notions
blood on his hands
stop, stop, pop tart
taste of your demands

if you wait, i will wait
if you taste, i will taste
if you run, i will run
if you love, i will love
to my last breath

tomb opens
reveal a stack of gold
cool poison
the taste of growing old
sit down, downtown
in your tower of steel

if you wait, i will wait
taste, i will taste
if you run, i will run
love, i will love
to my last breath
my last breath
to my last breath

wound opens
reveal a broken man
soon notions
blood on his hands

if you wait, i will wait
taste, i will taste
if you run, i will run
love, i will love
to my last breath

if you wait
if you wait
if you wait
if you wait

yo, the thing about MTAE is he just repeats the fucking title of the song like three dozens times, in addition to the necessary lovers and love is strange and running.

besides, the gish lyrics rule for the most part for what they are- acid-drenched, not burnt out yet. "rhinoceros" is full of great lyrics. there's a lot of classic rock stuff you know like "tell me tell me what you're after / i just wanna get there faster" "i am one as you are three" "i love you too / surely i do"
it works

i like gish era lyrics and its cooler than lalala lovers but if you want to get into how insipid the newer stuff is a lot of the pre-SD lyrics are on the same level

also i thought this was that lyrics bashing thread my bad. i guess you could say i'm the burnout!

i mean if there was a song about ice cream and baloons on tbk i don't think it would've went over as well

Elphenor

Gish lyrics are just abstract enough to portray the message of the album which is "Holy fuck I'm tripping balls"

And every song is different and strange lyrically you don't get "lover" in every track

pretty much anything off Adore and Machina. SD and MCIS have some great lyrics but I really think 97-99 was his peak as a lyricist.

To Sheila, Annie-Dog, Behold the Night Mare, Blank Page
This Time, Glass and the Ghost Children, The Crying Tree of Mercury, Age of Innocence

yeah the lyrics on machina i & ii and especially adore are fantastic. imo his best moment as a lyricist is "Rotten Apples," which distills the whole essence and message of MCIS into one song. and a song like 'Vanity' - there's no way he would've/could've written that early on (or now...)

yeah i always liked wound though i wish he didn't reference god twice. But i can always overlook the line. This song made me weep like a child in the machina days and it'sone of the few SP songs that can still get to me sometimes.

The biggest joke is that people think you need to be on drugs to make psych rock or spaced out music. Pink Floyd (aside from Syd) and Radiohead for instance...two bands that were/are mostly drug free.

Soot and Stars

the words flow
decisions made
idea's mine
but the inspiration not
dreams of hangers-on
dreams of getting well
spells of esmeralda
amarose fortold

splinters in the eye
sentiments remain
bones are never asked
where are we going to
it was never up to me
and yet i pushed until it broke

i love the open road
and all that it suggests
wheelwagon dust
weeds and infidelities
and always swore our love
never questioned why
in a wooden house
immovable and silent
and drinking strawberry wine
forever lost in town

and through the sleeping streets
nightbound and heavy
wheels in a spoke
just a spoken foreign sound

know my gates are high
my friends even higher
forgotten in my mind
yet the scars still lingering
cloud the blue skies
i'm jealous of you birds
was the only truth
in a world full of words

hear the prairie sound
in a friend called neil
the heart is pointed down
but my spirit pointed up
his voice the siren
of greek mythology

i pause with my pen
i begin to defend
every action taken
every moment sealed
when i was quick
it coursed through open veins
the will to live
the urgency to move
behind a panel door
sealing cherry stain
i played my guitar
and lived those lonesome notes

like a dog that's down
in a corner just aside
waiting to be called
waiting to be yours
ghosts of a machine
without purpose or will

i'll often speak of you
but the you was always me
'cause when i speak of me
it's me i ask of you
so let there be no truth
just trickery in rhymes
time the only thing
waiting still is death

i hope for resolution
pray one defining moment
pause without restraint
barren without child
a child is who i was
a child is who i'll die
a child is who i'll die

soot in my hair
and stars in my hands
soot in my hair
and stars in my hands
soot in my hair
and stars in my hands

Not his lyrics but I love that he covered My Blue Heaven

That song really fits the MCIS turn of the century aesthetic

Day is ending
Birds are wending
Back to their shelter of
Each little nest they love

Nightshade's falling
Lovebirds calling
What makes the world go 'round
Nothing but love

When Whippoorwills call
And evening is nigh
I hurry to my blue heaven

I turn to the right
A little white light
Will lead you to my blue heaven

You'll see a smiling face
A fireplace, a cozy room
A little nest that's nestled
Where the roses bloom

Just Molly and me
And baby makes three
We're happy in my blue heaven

You'll see a smiling face
A fireplace, a cozy room
A little nest that's nestled
Where the roses bloom

Just Molly and me
And baby makes three
We're happy in my blue heaven
We're happy in my blue heaven

Soot and Stars is awesome.

although, there are some clunkers in there "hear the prairie sound in a friend called neil" and "
his voice the siren of greek mythology".... i think the lyrics are really good but the production and fantastic vocal performance put it all together into a very magical recording

Syd was not the only one in Floyd that took psychedelics was he? I've never really thought about it.

Radiohead plays very sobering music, but Johhny and Thom did do plenty of drugs. I'm assuming a lot of MDMA was done in correlation with the making of Kid A

I looked it up and yeah all of Floyd's good albums were made when Roger was also doing psychedelics as well

Stellar

Is it wrong to say
I'm lost in your embrace?
Is it wrong to say so?

Within a dream I had, some vista vast
Meant for the poor of soul
Struck from the firstborn

Leapt from a ray of hope
Into a body I once knew
Built a mere kingdom of self abuse

Hitched to some rainbow
Once more, it's always yours
Once more

The wait hurts worse than the blows
The wait hurts worse than the blows

Words buy new life
Dust clears, no scars
Burnt but bright eyed
The sun's out, a still night stirs

The wait hurts worse than the blows
The wait hurts worse than the blows

Is it wrong to say
There's God and then there's faith?
Is it wrong to say so?

Withstood a thought so sad, I had to laugh
Cut from some polished bone
Crawled out of broken homes

Slipped on the afterglow
Into a worry and a curse
Stole from the Bible chapter and verse

Stitched to an old sail
Once more, it's always yours
Once more

The wait hurts worse than the blows
The wait hurts worse than the blow

Ah yes, Stellar is a great one. Should have been an actual album track instead of a bonus track.

VANILLA

do you scream
or do you dream
i am vanilla
i might consider this an invitation, yeah

more than you think
i need a drink
i am vanilla
i might consider this an invitation, yeah

she is my only friend
i'm with her till, till the end
yeah, they talk about me
i'm with her all the time
and i wish that she, she was mine
yeah, they talk about me

i am
i am vanilla
i am
i am vanilla
i might consider this an invitation, yeah

do you dream
or do you scream
i am vanilla
i might consider this an invitation, yeah
i might consider this an invitation, yeah
