Courtney is a frontwoman singer-songwriter type but people try to take her to task for not being Jimi Hendrix or Whitney Houston or whatever. I'm not sure it's always misogyny but I don't think it's fair in any case. I think she's a great entertainer

Despite some regrettable things i've said in the past that i wish i could take back, i think its kind of pretty lazy and wrong to say that anyone who doesn't like Love or think she sucks is necessarily a misogynist. The fact remains i don't like her for various reasons but i like plenty of women in rock.

Also...the fact that you don't even know what the hell she could do in this fictional band and say maybe she could play bass cause like it's easy and anyone can do that...could be seen as misogynist.

And yeah anyone can play bass like anyone can play guitar like anyone can play keyboard like anyone can play drums, playing an instrument well is something else though. But it is true a lot of bands treat bass like it doesnt really matter...

Blah blah blah feminist drivel. The bashing of Love has to do with the fact that's she a psycho bitch who, if not directly involved, definitely drove Kurt Cobain to suicide. Just listen to "You Know You're Right" by Nirvana for proof of that.

Er... 4. Rip, Kurt.

And before you poo poo your pants and scream misogyny, Kim Deal would be a better example of someone on par with the others. Courtney married the right guy and made friends with people to keep her in the spotlight. Money helped continue that for years.

Courtney has far less talent than any of those three.

It depends on what you're judging her by, musically maybe not. She's certainly an intelligent but ruthless person who has used that to her advantage.

Elphenor

Musically Manson has like zero talent whatsoever and I love the guy. He's just a performance artist with a cool sounding vocal tone

Araneae

Yeah, I personally don't think either of them are all that musically talented but it's a toss up.

Anyway, there are much, much better female rock figures from the 90s (and late 80s) who are a better representation of women in music during her time.

Araneae
12-04-2014, 03:41 AM
I find it difficult to really defend Courtney when she has thrown a lot of shade towards her female contemporaries, that and fact that practically all the men in alternative rock that were giving her praises were sleeping with her. Again, she's intelligent, savvy, and charming, but a great musician/writer she is not. She knew how to get into circles, talk to/sleep with the right people, promo herself, gossip, etc. It's certainly a gift, just not a musical one.

houseofglass11
12-04-2014, 03:58 AM
Pretty subjective

Yeah it must be when you've already admitted that you've never even heard Courtney Love's music.

houseofglass11
12-04-2014, 04:05 AM
Yes, this (houseofglass11's post) is so fucking dumb I don't know where to start.

What's dumb about it? My post simply stated that I believe Courtney Love drove Kurt Cobain to suicide. She's a nutcase, even her own father thinks so. Haven't you seen
the Kurt and Courtney documentary? It's well documented that she was a big time exhibitionist and fame seeker who would do anything to be famous, and who was looking for a rock star to sink her hooks into. That's coming from the mouths of people who knew her best.

It's been documented that Kurt was seeking a divorce from her at the time. Whether or not she had a direct hand in his death...who knows for sure, but she definitely had a lot to lose from the biggest rock star on the planet divorcing her, and a lot to gain with him dead and her gaining rights to all his estate's royalties.

Really though, there's no point in preaching this to Courtney Love advocates. Your mind is already made up clearly.

null123
12-04-2014, 04:11 AM
Kurt obviously thought she was pretty cool at some point considering he married her, knocked her up and publicly paraded their relationship

There is no way to accuse Courtney of what you're saying without also accusing Kurt of being a little fuckboy baby bitch

houseofglass11
12-04-2014, 04:21 AM
Well yeah, he was. He was an insecure, needy, and messed up guy. Someone like him was ripe for the taking by someone as dominant as Courtney Love. She has said publicly that he acted like a big baby all the time especially when he was on heroin and that she had to mother him.

She played the same mind games with BC even. She said in an interview how she deliberately kept their relationship unbalanced and the power in her hands by never saying "I love you" back, amused at how enamored BC was with her.

Elphenor
12-04-2014, 05:11 AM
This is pretty typical. Messed up Insecure girly dudes fall for sexually agressive messed up women.

Blaming Love for Kurt's suicide and not the insecurities, depression, and drug abuse that made him need her is stupid

Grox
12-04-2014, 05:29 AM
incredibly stupid! he fetishized suicide in his early teen years - watching the budd dwyer suicide tape over and over when he was dating tracy marander. his heroin addiction + stomach condition + pressure of success/conflicted feelings on whether or not to continue or go away and make music on a 4-track - all this only accelerated what was inevitable.

Anyway, there are much, much better female rock figures from the 90s (and late 80s) who are a better representation of women in music during her time.

That is certainly true. I just have to balk when anyone calls her a feminist icon. There are some of those in rock music, she isn't one of them. The fact that she did in fact pretty much sleep her way to fame puts her as ANYTHING but a feminist icon. On the other hand, the men who let her do it are as guilty in my mind.

But i think most of her issues are all due to drug problems (basically why people call her a psycho, that ends up being most people on drugs, they act in weird and irrational ways, she's no more psycho than most guys who ever had a hard drug problem). Which she's clearly not the first to have in rock music. But yeah probably got more shit than a lot of men for it. Still i dont give a pass to any men who have behaved in a similar way. And i don't consider Manson to be a more worthy artist than Love for sure. both wouldn't be much of anything without the people they surrounded themselves with. Though i suppose both have a talent to build an image that people responded to

It is stupid to say she caused Kurt's death though. Like let's absolve Kurt of all blame for his own SUICIDE. What? For one if she's such an awful person and Kurt is such a great guy, why did he end up with her then? i don't buy into this whole actually misogynistic way of thinking like...some bad girls can just ruin some perfectly great men....

That's fair...but it really depends. There are a lot of differing viewpoints in feminism, it's not like it's a unified set of ideologies. Some would argue that what Courtney did was empowering to herself and she used men the way that some men use women. She essentially reversed the roles while keeping the upper-hand.

I love Courtney and I love Hole and I think she and Kurt were a terrific couple and what happened was just bullshit tragic life, shit happens, it sucks, her life was more of a mess than it was before the suicide, she's one for the girls.

When I was in the psych ward at the hospital and busy thinking that being innocent and sweet were the best thing to become, and pure, and holy... Somebody brought in celebrity skin and played it to me - she was a lesbian with a shaved head. She was like remember this shit? You gotta get outta here. And I was like damn. Fuck this shit, you're right, I'm outta here. Courtney is one for the girls...she's the big sister who threw her life on the fire so you could see for yourself what it looks like when someone gets burned alive, or swallowed up, or consumed...so we don't have to do that now.

But her face D: OMG why :( Courtney you were so perfect, just stop screwing around with that shit. The last thing I need is for you to go full retard and pull a Michael Jackson/ Joan rivers on me, right now. Just please stop.

Manson's new song is better than anything on MTAE

This. Point in fact I'd wager his whole album's going to be better. Deep Six sounds like the studio version will be damned good.

They've both been putting out shitty albums for the better part of the last decade, but it's a toss-up as to who's become a sadder display.

Ugh...

So who else thinks about a minute into performing Ava Adore Billy was like, "Maybe this wasn't such a great idea."

I kinda feel bad for Billy here, you can see he's trying so hard to save this disaster.
You see him laugh and try to play it off, but it's instantly followed by a sullen and serious face.
But Marilyn Manson is just drunk and oblivious to how terrible it sounds.
I heard this is the equivalent of MM's shows lately, him just drunk and barely able to sing and complete a song live.

I'm gonna be serious while singing my song but act like a complete drunk fool on yours, Billy.

Did anyone see MM's recent performance of The Beautiful People where he had Johnny Depp on guitar and Ninja from Die Antwoord?
That was pure chaos and all over the frigging place. Looked like they were all having fun, but they didn't trainwreck the song.

This was on Halloween at The Roxy...

Definitely. Based on the raw energy and vocal delivery, I'd say shes held up better than any of the other 90's vocalists that I've seen... And I've pretty much seen em all (who are still around nowadays).

All of the local media outlets gave the show raving reviews as well.

I kinda went to the show on a last minute whim. I had just got paid and found out that I wasn't due into work, so I went down to the club to try and find a ticket. The show was sold out. I was having no luck and I was waiting at the box-office with some other girl (who loved my Zero shirt and was a big SP fan) hoping that they'd release a couple tickets... Then some drunk mid 40's guy came walking up to us and was like "You need tickets" ya... he pulled out a pair, and was like here take em... Just outright gave em to us and didn't want any money in return.

I was willing to spend up to 150 to get in too.

Was a hell of a show, great set list, get energy. Might be one of my favorite 90's acts I've ever seen live.

what is this supposed billy/manson feud all about? i've tried looking it up and haven't found much.

Some excerpts that give insight into the whole Corgan vs Love vs Manson vs Corgan issue...

Corgan got tiffed at Love when he felt he hadn’t received proper credit for songwriting duties on Hole’s 2010 Nobody’s Daughter LP. He told Rolling Stone, “I have no interest in supporting her in any way, shape or form. You can’t throw enough things down the abyss with a person like that.”

"I asked myself what is the last band in the world I would ever, ever want to tour with, and it was Hole, beyond a doubt," Manson told the San Francisco Examiner before Hole's exit. "But then I thought, I love a challenge, I like to surround myself with aggravation, it helps me perform better. And I thought, well, here's a chance to show Courtney the difference between being a celebrity and being a real rock star." Manson then added, "She never talked to me until I sold a million records. Sometimes we talk and it seems OK, other times, she's just a bitch. I really don't like her too much."

Read more here:
http://www.rollingstone.com/music/news/courtney-love-billy-corgan-and-marilyn-manson-end-longstanding-rift-20141206

Corgan and Manson apparently hadn’t talked in 15 years after the latter told the former that “it would be a good marketing idea that if he sold Charlie Brown T-shirts and bald caps at concerts… He does look like Charlie Brown a little bit, in fairness.”

i have doubts billy took the charlie brown thing too seriously.

I think he's pretty sensitive about his lack of hair.
-Gets very angry at guy on JJJ march 1996 who asks billy how his chemo treatment was going. pause... "how does this sound, FUCK OFF"
-That much music thing from 1998 when billy makes a joke about D'arcy riding james, says "ya just grab a mane of hair!" d'arcy laughs and says "yeah, and look who doesn't have their hair anymore." billy is clearly taken aback and embarrassed.
-august 1995, losing his hair, someone asks if the anti-christ walks the earth. billy points to james. everyone laughs. billy says smarmily, "He was tall and good looking....Always wore his hair long."
countless other times. I'm pretty sure Manson's heavy drug use and limited abilities contributed to billy burning that bridge for a bit.

Gotta believe Billy's having that executioner's dress he wore during the Machina tour let out for this.

Girdle.

Do we know why there's a difference in the list of tour dates between what's on spnexus and what MM posted on his facebook page?

Howard Stern talked about it today:

"The Smashing Pumpkins and Marilyn Manson are going on tour together. Well, Billy Corgan said
we can make this announcement..."

The poster looks like one of those 90s documentary preview clips of like, "my next door neighbor shot my dog" type stories.

If they had photoshopped Billy just a little more to the right it would look like he was sitting on Manson's lap.

I haven't seen Mr. Corgan in concert since the Machina tour and this is the first time I've been sorely tempted to see him one last time

Just wish I could attend that last one in Cincinnati of all places where they end the show by waving to the audience, then linking arms to drink from each other's poisoned chalices and collapsing dead on stage

the chalices are poisoned? were they wrought with poison, suffusing the molten iron with a pernicious marrow which would later seep out of the treacherous metal, thus poisoning the chian wine?

I hope there is some band overlap/guesting.

I'd love to hear Twiggy play with Mark Stoermer.

first SP tour since the reunion that i'm not even tempted to go see.

i saw the new band play Thalia Hall and it was okay... but not interested in him playing a greatest hits rock singles set to a bunch of Manson fans.

happy he'll finally get something of a crowd but i really don't know how 48 year old Billy is gonna go over with the Manson crowd.

Well I was thinking they could plagiarize Shakespeare by quoting Macbeth before drinking:

But in these cases
We still have judgment here; that we but teach
Bloody instructions, which, being taught, return
To plague the inventor: this even-handed justice
Commends the ingredients of our poison'd chalice
To our own lips.

But yes that's it exactly.
