Monuments

I feel alright
I feel alright tonight
And everywhere I go is shining bright
alright! alright! alright!

Love can ___ you easy
As you'd know
And does this make you feel strong (?)
It's when ____
And you'd ____
I know, I know you'd ____!

Lover, you're strange
Lover, you're strange
Lover, you're strange to me

I feel alright
I feel alright tonight
And everywhere I go is shining bright
alright! alright! alright!

____

____

Lover, you're strange
Lover, you're strange
Lover, you're strange to me

And what do you want me to do?
It's all got mad!
And what do you want me to say?
I'm lost like you

I feel alright
I feel alright tonight
And everywhere I go is shining bright
alright! alright! alright!

Decent song. Slightly offputting lyrics as usual, which aren't as easily ignorable as others because of fillers like "alright alright alright". Unfortunate dynamic range, it would have a much bigger impact if the quiet parts were actually quieter.

I like the synth holding the one note while the bass and guitar riff around it.

I actually like the lyrics, not in a poetic sense but the alright alright alright, comes across like he has sorta given up. Also, I like the "Lovah, you're strange" and "what do you want me to do, it's all gone mad".

it is lazy but it seems like a song about someone who has surrendered and become lazy.

The man feels alright, let him sing about it!

I actually think its maybe the coolest song Billy's done since 'Dross' (not as cool obviously).

Its not supposed to be poetic. Think its just about moving on from a girl and not feeling broken up about it and feeling...alright.

How many albums is he going to write about the Veronicas chick

as long as he can't come up with worthwhile lyrics - as many as he can sell

Jessica Origliasso says she and former Smashing Pumpkins boyfriend Billy Corgan would jokingly pretend to argue so they could write tortured and inspiring lyrics to clinch record deals.
'We [Billy Corgan] joked that we would fight all the time so we could both get good records.'

Lisa elaborated saying: 'Artists are such tortured souls, aren’t they? There is no greater inspiration than heartbreak or heartache. I find it hard to feel inspired to write when I am really happy and balanced.'

don't know where the tortured and inspiring lyrics are - "you ruined me" vs "it's alright"

11-29-2014, 01:27 AM
yeah, i was gonna say... to me its like a cross between Inkless and GLOW, but a lot better than either of those. i really dug the preview clip but hearing the whole song at the show the other night, my initial reaction was kind of...meh... the parts where the guitars cut out just sounded super out of place live without an actual keyboardist.... but the studio version is actually pretty dope.

i actually really dig the lyrics of Inkless... "come unlace your light". and the solo kicks ass. it's just too similar to hummer, and the vocals and production suffer from the overall Oceania softness

BloodstainedJar
11-29-2014, 01:47 AM
I think Inkless is amazing. Whether it was a case of Corgan trying to copy his old sound or not, that song takes me back to the SP glory days. The lyrics aren't the best, but he has a few passages in there that I absolutely love:

No loss spared
For losing you aint right
You haunt where
Spirits take their time
Its time I can't seem to fight

This is pretty awesome. It's one of the only songs where I think that the syntn actually sounds cool. Tommy just rocks too. He may not be technically proficient but he's just such a good rock drummer. I think hearing this new shit really illustrates just how badly Mike Byrne sucked (if anyone wants a reminder, just listen to the "when I'm wrong I'm right" part in Chimera. just an embarrassingly bad primary rock beat)

Oceania was the only Pumpkins release I haven't bought (I even bought TBK vol 1&2 for it's cool content) but I'm definitely gonna go out and pick this one up when it comes out

Well done SP

[QUOTE=Elphenor;4118658]I just can't get behind the chorus[/QUOTE

Easily the best one so far.

fuzzyroes
11-29-2014, 08:07 AM
I think people need not get too upset over the lyrics. For lovers (ha) of Billy's work, we like the complex lyrics and so getting more simplistic ones is a disappointment - but I think it needs to be realized and accepted that Billy is probably very intentionally dumbing down the lyrics in order to appeal to a larger audience. Half of what made SP so radio-unfriendly was the complex lyrics. Remember that these 2 albums have been very much about reaching a broad appeal again, perhaps for the last time. That's kind of the mission behind them. I don't think Billy has "lost it" or forgotten how to write a deeply meaningful song lyrics-wise. Just accept where we are at this part of the SP journey and enjoy the music, even if it's simple. The song still rocks and every song we've heard so far has been catchy (and VERY radio friendly.)

As for Mike Byrne vs Tommy Lee - I feel like Byrne's drumming on Oceania was a lot about precision, but it kind of lost the bombastic quality that Jimmy and TL have that make listening to drums enjoyable for the ear. That being said, when I heard Mike drum live, I enjoyed it.

Nicely and thoughtfully put Beltte. I agree. Billy isn't looking to pour out his soul and divulge into his demons right now, he's just trying to make an awesome album with an appealing feel and he's definitely achieved that goal. So far I'm super surprised and happy with what I've heard.

It has the potential for being another classic album

Elphenor
11-29-2014, 08:16 AM
 unless you're being sarcastic, the majority of SP material isn't very radio friendly.

SD and MCIS both produced multiple radio hits that were absolutely huge at the time, are still played on the radio today, and are even recognized by the most casual of music listeners.

Ram27
11-29-2014, 10:54 AM
I wouldn't be able to tell Lee's drumming from anyone else's given clips to listen to. But with a drummer like Jimmy I for sure could.

He's really unremarkable. He doesn't do annoying fills like Burns which is nice but that's it.

fuzzyroes
11-29-2014, 11:00 AM
Yeah, but Lee knows how to make simple guitar riffs sound intense. He knows how to create a groove from a simple piece that'll make you wanna bob your head.

If you listen to the sound texture and how the drums create scenery for the music on these Monuments songs and then listen to what Byrne did you'll realize the difference. Tommys drums have depth and precision where as Byrnes drums sound tinny and hollow.

fuzzyroes

Really nice song, some great guitars, I like the synths and that bass during the bridge is fucking hot. But it suffers from the same as all the others so far: it needs that something extra to take it up a level - could be a guitar solo, a counter melody or just some heightened passion. Corrigan never used to be satisfied with repeating a hook without bringing something in over it; he does it a lot now.

prob somewhat worth noting that the (studio) version of monuments we're hearing at the moment is more than likely "double-compressed," since it was already mastered for the album and whatnot and was probably goin through some type of radio/broadcast limiter for the show it was ripped from so
