View Full Version : I can't believe Dire Straits where the biggest band of the 80s
Catherine Wheel 11-15-2014, 12:50 AM I was looking at this list of the 100 biggest selling albums of the 80s and Dire Straits are on there like 4 or 5 times. Jesus fucking Christ the 80s was a horrible time for music. How the fuck does a corny pub rock band get to be the biggest band of that whole decade?
Elphenor 11-15-2014, 12:52 AM The 80's were the best decade for music ever
Pretty sure the best selling groups of every decade were shit
dreams of glass 11-15-2014, 01:01 AM Dire Straits are awesome. I'm sorry you don't see that.
Elphenor 11-15-2014, 01:11 AM I don't even know what they sound like
Catherine Wheel 11-15-2014, 01:18 AM I just know that for this decade it will probably be Maroon Five.
The Omega Concern 11-15-2014, 01:25 AM I don't even know what they sound like
For guitarist, their song Sultans of Swing is the type of song one needs to be aware of to play the instrument 'properly'. It's a lesson in how to be delicately tasteful with the chops.
Elphenor 11-15-2014, 01:27 AM Oh that's Dire Straits I like that song
Sonic Johnny 11-15-2014, 01:38 AM Kimani do you seriously not understand why shit music sells lots of copies or are you just phrasing your whinge in the form of a question?
Sonic Johnny 11-15-2014, 01:39 AM The 80's were the best decade for music ever
Man you know in the other thread I was talking about how you constantly post in grand declarative statements?
Catherine Wheel 11-15-2014, 01:45 AM No I definitely get it. I was kind of thinking it would be the Cars or Duran Duran which are just as bad in a lot of ways.
Elphenor 11-15-2014, 02:04 AM Dude The Cars are brilliant what the fuck
Go back to listening to Coldplay
Catherine Wheel 11-15-2014, 02:19 AM Everything the Cars did in the 80s was horrible. Basically the same thing that happened to the Police and Vampire Weekend happened with the Cars. They got worse over time until they were just really mediocre and boring.
Elphenor 11-15-2014, 02:36 AM lol
Elphenor 11-15-2014, 02:40 AM Shake it Up is such a good album
Trotskilicious 11-15-2014, 03:16 AM Catherine Wheel lives in another reality. This thread proves it.
fuzzyroes 11-15-2014, 03:49 AM Shake it Up is such a good album
Shake it ups one of their worst:o
Trotskilicious 11-15-2014, 03:51 AM hipster
Elphenor 11-15-2014, 03:51 AM It's not their best but it's not their worst either and even Cars at their worst are still okay
Trotskilicious 11-15-2014, 03:52 AM i like the police a lot no lie
fuzzyroes 11-15-2014, 03:54 AM Police are one of those bands who have fantastic singles, but way too much filler on their albums.
fuzzyroes 11-15-2014, 03:56 AM This is my Karaoke jam

Fucking sweeet tune
Elphenor 11-15-2014, 03:59 AM Honestly gotta admit that The Police are an 80's band I just can't get into
fuzzyroes 11-15-2014, 04:01 AM Police are a band for intelligent people, it's probably why you can't dig em ;):P
Elphenor 11-15-2014, 04:04 AM The Police and Duran Duran are bands that show that even post-punk can be lame
Elphenor 11-15-2014, 04:06 AM But then again I've heard so many people swear by The Police there has to be something great about them
Just not my thing
fuzzyroes 11-15-2014, 04:08 AM lol police sound nothing like Duran Duran
fuzzyroes 11-15-2014, 04:09 AM Honestly, I think it's impossible not to like songs like Message In A Bottle and So Lonely at least a little bit.
Trotskilicious 11-15-2014, 04:30 AM But then again I've heard so many people swear by The Police there has to be something great about them
Just not my thing
so don't call them lame again, fuckweasel
Trotskilicious 11-15-2014, 04:30 AM because i know it's STING and all BUT
Trotskilicious 11-15-2014, 04:31 AM besides how can a person like morrissey and not forgive sting
Trotskilicious 11-15-2014, 04:35 AM you know what i think this is my destiny i actually liked the sting records i had as a kid yes i had sting solo records as a kid and you know what the guy is pretty maligned. i know his music is basically white people doing yoga rock now but i can get on some fields of gold and fortress around your heart
Trotskilicious 11-15-2014, 04:44 AM listening to Sting right now

fuzzyroes 11-15-2014, 04:47 AM I've never actually listened to his solo work aside from the few huge singles or whatever. Would you recommend checking any of it out or is it just something that you enjoy for nostalgia purposes?
Trotskilicious 11-15-2014, 05:09 AM i thought you knew this by now: I don't do nostalgia
Trotskilicious 11-15-2014, 05:09 AM he is super serial though, jesus
Trotskilicious 11-15-2014, 06:20 AM so after relistening to dream of the blue turtles i have remembered the reason people hate sting is songs like russians, children's crusade and moon over bourbon street. the first two are that kind of stone serious lets heal the world with my song kind of political 80s stuff but you know i don't have a problem with that but these songs are boring, they're like sermons ugh. but then we work the black seam is like that as well but the overall mood is darker and the chorus is catchy, and horrible at the same time. so it works. what can i say. moon over bourbon street is boring like the other two but he's trying to be clever and fails.
3 police songs on her kick ass, if you love somebody set them free, love is the seventh wave, fortress around your heart
weird how srs he is tho, there's lots of funny police songs i guess that was early on
i'm going to change to a sting avatar
fuzzyroes 11-15-2014, 06:22 AM What are some good Sting songs to check out? I've always really enjoyed a lot of Police songs but never bothered checking out an iota of his solo records.
