View Full Version : Offspring Smash: One of the best punk albums ever

For whatever reason Offspring seemingly lost it after this release, but this has to be one of the best punk albums. Has to be in the top 20 at least.

It's just such a powerful album and the energy and sound they achieved on this album is bar-none in my opinion.

Even the crustiest punks out there can't deny the genius of this album.

For that reason I think it's almost underrated in this day and age. It just hasn't reached the legendary status that a lot of other 90's albums have and it certainly should.

It's so rare to find an album that's just that tight throughout. Theres not 1 skip-able song on it.

This is in no way a "troll-thread" despite what you and likely trots will say.

It's a brilliant punk album, and I can't think of any punk band who's put out anything as fresh and different since.

You don't even like good music from the 90s like trip hop or shoegaze or dream pop. Just the shitty American stuff.

I love a lot of the British shoe-gaze. Slouvaki is one of my top 10 fave albums for crying out loud.

I know Offsprings considered mainstream and due to that is glossed over by a lot of music fans but Smash really is a special album.

I mean it was an Indie release that sold over 10 million copies. That just goes to show the pure quality and energy that resonated with people

but when I look at the 90's critically and consider the albums that will really stand the test of time theres no doubt that Smash is one of them.

As much as I love Green Day even Dookie sounds kinda dated in its own right. I'd say the same for Nevermind, Ten, Siamese dream and a lot of those other mainstay albums.

Hey guys, Trots can't appreciate Smash. He's too into the critical darlings like Swans:dammit::rofl:

I mean I'll admit I like "Self-Esteem" and it was one of the first songs I learned to play just because it's just a blast to drunkenly sing with friends

"I'm not a dweeb
I'm just a sucker with low self-esteem"

Yup, I can dig that

fuzzyroes
10-26-2014, 03:16 AM
That's cool. Have you given the rest of the album a fair shake? Cause if you dig that song I'm not sure what's not to like about the rest of it.

For what it's worth that track and it's video was what propelled me to get my Mom to take me to "Music world" to pick up the Smash Cassette

They're like Green Day, I don't hate them or anything, but I never listen to them

fuzzyroes
10-26-2014, 03:23 AM
That doesn't answer my question. Smash really is a stand alone album as far as any thing by the Offspring is concerned IMO. The rest of the stuff is quaint shit... It's weird. So I'm not really talking about them as a band... But strictly this one album.

fuzzyroes
10-26-2014, 03:23 AM
I'm also a Green Day fan boy, but i'd have to honestly say that Smash knocks any of their stuff outta the park.

fuzzyroes

Offsprings definitely a one-album-wonder as far as I'm concerned... Though there is a large sect of people who look at "Americana" thru rose colored glasses

Elphenor
10-26-2014, 03:27 AM
Ummm, listening right now, it's okay, These songs could all be about a minute shorter though, the hooks aren't strong enough to support these 3 and half minute songs.

Yeah Green Day was the real deal. I was so enthralled with them as a kid, and today, 20 years later a lot of it still sounds great.

Dookie and Insomniac are 2 albums by a band creatively firing on all cylinders. The rest are hit and miss but theres been great stuff on each subsequent album... It just seems to be getting less and less as the years go on though.

10-26-2014, 03:58 AM
I'd be a little kid at the drugstore while my parents were running errands and literally be so excited to see Green Day on the cover of Hit Parader or some shit magazine like that that they had at the store. I'd plead for them to buy it for me and sit at home just starting at their pictures in awe.

Elphenor
10-26-2014, 03:59 AM
They were still cool when I was in high school I don't know why. I had the biggest crush on this girl that was really into them.

fuzzyroes
10-26-2014, 04:03 AM
haha yeah, they definitely had a full-throttle resurgence with American Idiot. At the time I hated the album and was pissed off that they were wearing eye-liner and jumping the shark. My girlfriend at the time knew I loved them and couldn't believe I wasn't even going to the show and surprised me with a ticket the day of. I went and it was pretty damn good.

Since then I think a lot of American Idiot is pretty great. Whatsername and Letterbomb are two Primo tracks that stand high with the rest of their catalog

Elphenor

I asked her to go to the Green Day concert
She said she never heard of them

It really picks up in the 2nd half eh?

The last songs gotta be something you can get behind, right?. And it just kicks ass. Still sounds as great today as it did then

Elphenor
10-26-2014, 04:21 AM
I mean it's okay, the "Come out and Play" + "Self Esteem" combo is a ton of fun, but the rest of the album just isn't very memorable

THE RECOGNITION IT HAS RECEIVED IN THE 20 YEARS SINCE ITS RELEASE IS NOT ENOUGH

i remember reading an insomniac era interview in one of those magazines where it talked about billy joe's black on black converse so i began searching for a pair (never even knew they existed until then) and then it mentioned patching tears in his black chinos with red dental floss and so i had to try that too

heh that's awesome. I always read about countless musicians claiming Green Day as the band that got them into music. It's definitely interesting, I guess maybe the simplicity and straightforward approach resonated with the youngsters.

They didnt get me into music per se but...i learned to play bass partly along their first four records whether i like to admit it or not... Not JUST Green Day but i did play them a lot and i can sometimes recognize still today the influence in some patterns i play even if i don't do pop punk at all.

That's cool man. I'm the same way to a much greater extent. It's not like I still go around with Green Day blasting on my headphones. In fact I rarely listen to em at all anymore, but it still doesn't take away from the strong influence they've had on my musical upbringing.

Though, when I'm hammered some place and their only decent CD is Dookie it still makes for a rad nostalgia trip. Insomniac and a few tracks from American Idiot are the only Green Day tracks I ever revist now and again.
