Or, you know, coincidentally, when he stopped writing about her the entire music business shifted to a completely different business model and "hits" became less of a thing. Either one of those, I guess.

yeah cause BC never wrote a hit past SD......

uh, she mentioned at least 2 songs from mellon collie but okay

never knew where boys fear to tread had anything to do with trent reznor, always thought it was just one of his more abstract songs about nothing (i.e. Jellybelly?) that he was kinda actually having fun with and whatnot, doom samples and all

Courtney can (still) be such a bitch. The fact that she thinks that Billy wrote Today about her is absolutely bizarre.

It's her getting an inch and taking a mile. Billy has admitted he has written songs about her. Right off the top of my head he mentioned in the Siamese Dream liner notes that "Luna" is about her. Also, in some interview in 2004 (I think at one of the poetry readings) he called her one of the "loves of his life" or something along those lines.

But for her to say he wrote songs like "Where Boys Fear to Tread" and "Today" about her is ridiculous. He has told the story about what "Today" is about dozens of times, and he mentions in the notes for Mellon Collie that what Mals Marola said is pretty much spot on; "Where Boys Fear to Tread" was a riff he came up with on the spot and wrote some nonsense lyrics for.

I can see why he wants nothing to do with her.

Mals Marola

Right off the top of my head he mentioned in the Siamese Dream liner notes that "Luna" is about her.

that was one thing that kinda blew my mind and honestly i'm tryin to forget

the sweetest-sounding song on the album this side of spaceboy and it's pretty much about his adultery

i guess that's siamese dream for ya, just always thought that one was kind of the exception

Araneae
10-14-2014, 12:48 AM
She's also kind of dismissing the two women that Billy spent a decade of his life with, respectively. He wrote a couple of songs about her, but she's not the reason why he was successful, which is essentially what she's trying to claim here. But she says a lot of things and she can be a bitch like that. During the 90s she started claiming that she was on the cover of PI and that those songs were about her, again that turned out to be untrue as well.

Ram27

Narcissistic Personality Disorder is characterized by a long-standing pattern of grandiosity (either in fantasy or actual behavior), an overwhelming need for admiration, and usually a complete lack of empathy toward others. People with this disorder often believe they are of primary importance in everybody’s life or to anyone they meet. While this pattern of behavior may be appropriate for a king in 16th Century England, it is generally considered inappropriate for most ordinary people today.

I couldn't believe that Luna was about her and that he didn't write it for his wife (or fiance at the time of the song being written). Courtney was not deserving of such a beautiful song. She was the "other woman" that broke up his marriage cause he kept going back to her. He had some weird emotional addiction to her.

Also keep in mind that the horrible suicidal depression BC always talked about that led to Today and Disarm was caused in large part by the enormous success of Nevermind compared to Gish, and by the fact that his ex-girlfriend had married and conceived a child with the biggest rock star in the world, and the messiah of the alternative nation that he always wanted to be and probably never imagined would get as big as it did. with regard to the depression that led to Today and Disarm, he talked a lot about how he "wanted to be a rock god" and failed at posing, so he wrote these open-hearted pop songs.

candy cane walks down
to build a bonfire, to break my fall
my baby, my sweet thing
just maybe we could lose ourselves this time
king of the horseflies, dark prince of death
his tragic forces are heaven sent
in sweet things, in a lovers breath
in knowing this was meant to be the last
a go-go-kids, a go-go-style
a suck suck kiss, a suck suck smile
as always, in young need
a velied promise to never die
on dead highways, her black beauties roam
for june angels, so far from home
for a love lost, a faded picture
to tread lightning, to ink the lavender skies
so get on the bomb
get back where you belong

No I really don't think at that point before he'd gone more gothy that BC would have referred to himself that way. IF that song really is partly about Trent, then that line must surely mean him.

Why does the lyric have to refer to a real person?

Araneae
10-14-2014, 08:24 PM
“Corgan is one of the greatest bass players actually, he’s a better bass player than a guitar player. He’s a hell of a guitar player, but he just can’t seem to get over the lump and become relevent again. It’s really weird, he’s doing all sorts of wackydoodle things to do it, and it just doesn’t seem to work for him.”

“So many of them are about me. Most of Siamese Dream is about me. There’s a song called ‘Bodies,’ and ‘Today’ is about me. ‘Tonight, Tonight.’ Then he stopped writing about me, and he stopped writing hits. I don’t know what that’s about. They’re not all about me, one’s about me and Trent, and how mad he was about that. I think it’s called ‘Where Boys Fear To Tread.’ Not everything on Mellon Collie is about me, another girl came around, and he started writing about her. But it’s a mix, Siamese Dream is, there’s one called ‘Spaceboy’ about his brother, the rest are pretty much about me.”

Asides from being a catty and narcissistic bitch, I wonder how she reasons that Tonight, Tonight was written about her.

If the world were perfect Eddie wouldn't have written "Black"!!!

In my school, after "Ten" was released, it was a commonly told story that Eddie had been walking in some kind of forested area, had come across a bunch of kids around a campfire singing "Black," and had come over to ask them to stop because the song was so personal and painful

Why absolutely no one ever questioned this story, with its odd parallel to the lyrics about taking a walk outside and being surrounded by kids and so on, remains a mystery to me; I suppose we all just thought it made the song seem that much more, y'know, meaningful and deep and parents just don't understand

But it was Elphenor. People loved punk in the early 1990's. Loved it. It became mainstream. Michael Jackson became punk and Nirvana became Sinatra.

Can I see some evidence for this?

Like what Punk bands in the early 90's were mainstream. I don't even think I can name a 90's Punk band

Elphenor
02-25-2015, 01:54 AM
Well, I mean, Nirvana pretty much was a Punk band, but fuck all else from that era is Punk

Fugazi (who I think of as an 80's band) and Jawbreaker are super great though and I've seen Bad Religion live and they were okay.

Because they're rooted in Hardcore and the song in that video was first played in the 80's and I think first released on the compilation "13 Songs" in 1988 or 1989

Elphenor
02-25-2015, 05:29 AM
Along with Pixies they are the band that was playing the type of Alternative Rock that Nirvana would bring into the mainstream so MTV and such could cash in on it.

Idk if you think because they're wearing T-shirts it makes them a 90's band or what

there were a bunch of popular 90's punk bands, sublime, lagwagon, bigwig, guttermouth, gob, pennywise, propaghandi, NOFX, reel big fish, no doubt, L7, hole, bikini kill,
+ a bunch of emo bands
green day (even though renaldo said they weren't punk)

i just listed the bands my friends listened to. it's important to understand that genres evolve... i didn't like 90's punk (except the grungy type, most of it was 'ska') but that's still what the scene was, and since i was in high school i know it was there. you can't say that there was no 90's reggae just cause the bands didn't have a roots sound.

this moved me. made me a little sad. melancholy, if you will.

Nardwuar is interviewing Hole at lollapalooza 1995. Courtney is very fucked up and literally being held up from falling down by an handler. there's a great moment in the beginning when Kim Gordon walks by off camera and Courtney yells at her. this is only a day or so after Courtney punched Kathleen Hanna in the face.

anyway. Nardwuar is doing his thing, giving them stuff and asking questions about their rider. At 2:45, he hands Courtney some trading cards, and she starts, like...cry-laughing. She hands them to Eric and he bursts out laughing, too. At 3:05, we see that one of them is a card with Billy on it. It's impossible to read but Courtney says Bill is listed as "Mr. Charisma."

The thing that got me is the way Courtney looks at the card. She's on the ground, getting picked up by her handler, still sort of heave-laughing as if she's crying, and she just STARES at this card for 20 seconds, lost in reverie. And then, at 3:43, "I'm not interested in the other two, I don't sleep with them."

Kurt was not at all friends with their lead-singer Billy Corgan, Billy was Courtney's former boyfriend and Kurt still was very jealous of him (Kurt wrote Heart Shaped Box after he had found a heart shaped box filled with Billy Corgan's love-letters, Courtney had kept this box. This incident made Kurt extremely jealous.).

...whereafter she took a cab to the Metro and saw Nirvana and consummated her romance with Kurt.

according to Billy, she called him the next day and asked if she could stay with him - he responded "well, if you slept with Rockstar A, you can't go back to Rockstar B. and then she followed him to Minneapolis..."

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kw0UG8PeQMY

but who knows? Nirvana opened their acoustic instore the day after that with "Where Did You Sleep Last Night"
