you know - the sort of album that doesn't necessarily try to sway your vote one way or the other because in a sense the album feels like a reflection of you. you can put it on at anytime (which you admit you don't do often enough) and it just makes you feel so very cozy and like everything on the planet is going to be ok. these records help to reinforce what you think you think about the world.

you know the sort of thing i'm talking about. limit your answers to no more than three.

so far all i've got is:

graham nash - songs for beginners (1971)
rameses iii - i could not love you more (2009)

I hate to be a bore but...

The Cure - Dinsintegration.

Though it's a playing it safe record in a way because its so homogenous except for maybe like the singles (lovesong, lullaby, fascination street) which sound a bit different. But its like "hey i have a good song, let's write all the songs on the record to be like this one". Still, there's not one bad song on it. Maybe one or two weaker song like Homesick but not enough you want to skip it. Even if yeah, i dont feel that record lyrically now as much as i did when i was a teen or young adult.

And maybe a bit out of left field but it just crossed my mind.

Tears for Fears - The Hurting

If only they'd remained that good on every subsequent record. But that's pretty much the only record they have i like. But i feel there's not really a bad song on it.

And in more modern times, I think Chvrches - The Bones of What you Believe is pretty much nearly perfect EXCEPT i suppose the two songs where the guy(s) sing lead. Maybe i just feel resentment to be denied the perfection that is ****** Mayberry on those two songs. i don't know. But that record really resonated with me last fall and winter. It motivated me to write and record a lot even if what i (attempt to) do musically has nothing to do most days with synthpop. It was just...really inspiring to me somehow.

I can think of another but fear of ridicule is keeping me from mentioning it.

I also associate Cranberries' To the Faithful Departed with cozy, rainy days. I think because back when I was a teenager, I had to hide my "secular" music and so I'd either hide out in one of the bathrooms or in my room with the door locked, and listen to that album. I remember one time in particular it was raining so that kinda makes me think of that. I kinda wish they'd reissue it on vinyl because the original pressing is like $100+.

i am very behind on godspeed

it's like sit down and turn off everything demands your attention music. i should just buy vinyl modern prog and be all super hilarious and dated when i'm 50 like dudes into asia and yes were (dr venture basically)

i think that would be good for me, to turn everything off and just listen to a record instead of having this eternal combination of music + activity

The exploding boy
10-18-2014, 09:07 AM
i like a lot of post rock but not godpseed because they have like 20 minutes songs with changing patterns of which about only 5 mins of the song is actually any good and i prefer bands like mogwai who repeat one really good pattern with minor variations over and over for like five to ten minutes instead. I know it sounds dumb but really that's the assessment i made of Godpseed some years ago.

Keep in mind my brain analyzes all music as if it were pop. It always looks for a hook.

I've only heard F#A#infinity and Skinny Fists, but I prefer the former album by far.

No man, it's all about the hook (a stupid word but i don't know how to define what i mean better). I did give a try to more "challenging" (kinda hate this word too, also, not that godspeed is challenging) music, realised i didn't have the brain for it. basically all the music i really like is either pop or disguised pop (since most of it is not defined as pop but really, to me it is). I blame it on my upbringing.
