there's like no consensus on this board anymore i mean is this typical where people who like music come together and if they talk about new music then it's like all the bands that put out a record are on at least one list or something plus i mean most of teh time i'm like i thought i knew a lot of bands but people are bringing up stuff i've never seen before

i'm looking at my discogs page and i've only purchased 12 hard copies of 2014 music.

i say "hard copies" because i've probably bought that many "albums" on bandcamp in 2014 as well but for some reason that doesn't count for me. even if i pay for a download (like on bandcamp) it still doesn't feel like i own it or that its a proper album, etc.

I usually hear only about three or four releases on the same year that they're released because I'm trying to catch up on previous years.

Tobacco - Ultima II Massage was good though I haven't listened to it much

BJM - as above, I almost forgot that it was even released. Which isn't really surprising since it had already been out for a few weeks before I even knew about it. BJM's last two albums, while thoroughly enjoyable, have felt a bit too much like retreading ground, and it just doesn't grab me with the same immediacy as their other work. As far as their later work goes, My Bloody Underground and Who Killed Sgt Pepper are fantastic albums, and far more adventurous than anything that they previously put out.

Have a Nice Life - The Unnatural World was a bit of a sophomore slump compared to their cult classic debut, but it was still enjoyable

To Be Kind not only lived up to the hype but surpassed it

Die! Die! Die! - S W I M builds on their previous work and has some of their best songs on it. I got the CD signed by the band too. Someone in their entourage was like "seriously?" like a stuck up prick when I asked.

At some point I intend to check out:
Aphex Twin - Syro
Iceage - Plowing Into the Field of Love
Mac Demarco - Salad Days
Electric Wizard - Time to Die
White Lung - Deep Fantasy
Interpol - El Pintor
ScO)))tt Walker - Soused
Nothing - Guilty of Everything

Sonic if you like FKA Twigs you should give PartyNextDoor a try. It's a similar aesthetic. Hazy and futuristic.

I'm pretty ambivalent about him actually. I think his whole "drake but weird" thing needs actually both a bit more drake and a bit more weird. If the production was more interersting the songwriting could get away with being so flat, or even vice versa, but as it is he's not impressed me yet.

Catherine Wheel
10-15-2014, 10:22 PM
The production is where his strengths lie I think. The songwriting is a little underwhelming at times. His songs often aren't fleshed out enough especially on his self titled EP. His album TWO is amazing to me just from a production standpoint. It doesn't really sound like anything I've heard before.

Only four albums have stood out to me this year. Everything else I've heard I've either hated or it had no effect on me whatsoever.

"To Be Kind" - Swans
"Melana Chasmata" - Triptykon
"Harbinger" - Mutilation Rites
"July" - Marissa Nadler

So 2014 really really paled in comparison to 2013 for me... but I probably listened to these the most this year:

Ty Segall - Manipulator
Spoon - They Want My Soul
Real Estate - Atlas
Bear Hands - Distraction

I also really enjoyed a bunch of songs from these less solid albums...
The Brian Jonestown Massacre - Revelation
The Malpractice - Mass
The Black Lips - Underneath The Rainbow
Big Ups - Eighteen Hours of Static

which is?

I actually kinds find this video annoying in its indie pop tweeness (8mm film, people on swings, and seriously the girl on keyboard looks like every ontarian indie girl iv'e ever known) It is otherwise though probably my favorite song i heard this year. I can't get it out of my head, the vocal melody is just pop perfection. and i'm hot for Molly Rankin's kinda blase voice.

It makes sense because half the band is actually from there. Molly Rankin is from the Rankin Family (the celtic folk band, her dad was one of them).

edit: actually, correction, i guess the rankin family is from Nova Scotia, not New Brunswick, BUT WHO CAN TELL THOSE TWO GODDAMN PROVINCES APART? I've never been to the maritimes actually. Someday. Sappyfest is a good name for a festival.

mark mcguire has a new album coming out (an EP) in a couple of weeks as well. Apparently he's going to be a father soon and might be looking for a real job.

That's two down

with those two, along with fourth world magazine's (spencer clark/charles berlitz) "pinhead in fantasia" coming any day now 2014 is ending strongly for me. 3 records by three of my top 5 artists all within a couple weeks of one another.

Dirty Beaches is what happens when you find out you can run everything on garageband through an amp simulator, and not have to actually write a song as long as everything else is being blistered by the amp simulator. It works a few times but this guy gets waaayyy too much hype.

Favorite song of the year:

Sun Kil Moon - I Watched the Film The Song Remains the Same

The guitars are so dreamy and Mark's lyrics are honest and beautiful.

i changed my mind how i feel about it. there are some really strong songs and there are some others i'm not so hot about. kind of like roxy music.

no i meant the new bryan ferry. there are some really really strong songs and then there are a few songs where i'm reaching for the skip button. just like all of his discography and roxy music in general
