For a career retrospective show, not a single nod to the Gish era/beginning of his career.

Just left the show. It was amazing! Several standing ovations. He should have ended it at Ave Adore. The last 2-3 songs with the backup singers were awkward. Then when the wrestlers came out thousands of people were cringing in unison. He plays an acoustic ballad with 150 wrestlers on stage? Weird.

Galapogos was a highlight. Bill's voice was really great. Matt Walker was totally unnessaasary. The new songs was rough. Basically a 5 minute noodle fest by Bill with Shredder jamming on bass. Bill was in great spirits. Definitely losing weight. He seemed really blown away by the audience support.

Lastly, that venue is amazing. The crowd was great. Didn't see the usual SP crowd. Really enjoyed the whole experience.

So 24 songs in all?

There was another acoustic song before Lonely, I didn't recognize it. It could have been a Chicago song that I didn't remember.

World's Fair was completely unrecognizable. He had those Siddartha synthesizer things sitting there blinking the whole night and that, of all songs, was the only time they were used. Everyone was pretty WTF for the most part.

There was a song called Burnt Orange Black with Ex-Cops. Might have been their song. There was another song the Ex-Cops chick sang that had Billy's name in it (I think?).

Hopefully everyone had a great time. Set list looks about what I expected, as he did say that he was going to play his favorites. wHATcOLOR
08-31-2014, 04:27 AM
aware that my opinion on this doesn't matter, but figured i'd offer my take anyway:

initial reaction the the setlist, assuming it's correct, having heard nothing:

really would have been excited to hear these:

To forgive
Muzzle
Galapagos
Methusela
33

would enjoy these:

Chicago (on piano)
MCIS
Perfect

really depends on how these were performed:

Beginning is the end is the beginning
Stand inside your love
of a broken heart

for example - if stand inside your love had immediacy and earnestness- pretty dope. if it's phoned in, much less so.

honestly not really pumped on these, don't have much emotional connection w/ them, but give 'em the benefit of the doubt:

Let me give the world
Pinwheels
Rose march

have never enjoyed these:

Crying tree of mercury
Now and then
For your love
Prairie song
Lonely is the name

and hard to be enthused w/ these: pure greatest hits, always played at nearly every show. seems like a waste to have about 20% of your setlist to be of this category, when you've called it out as a really special, unique event. you could take just 1 or 2 of these, and sub in 3 of the "always plays these too" list i put down below and probably be better off while still getting in your quota

Today
Disarm
Tonight tonight
1979
Ava Adore

off the top of my head, some songs that would have been impressive / exciting to have included:
not worth asking
porcelina
medellia of the grey skies
rotten apples
stumbleine
pennies
the tale of dusty and pistol pete
crush
snail
set the ray to jerry
la dolly vita
whir
lily
blank page
beautiful
by starlight
luna
here is no why
try, try, try
this time
with every light
czarina
once in a while
daphne descends
speed kills
rocket

some songs that would still hit the "we've played this a ton of times before" but preferable to some in the list:
to sheila
mayonaise
soma
drown
geek usa
zero

i think what this reinforces for me is that there is no change when it comes to me not connecting w/ billy's view of his work for the last decade+
last time i really connected w/ it i supposed is the last show on 12/2/2000. was an amazing dig through the archives. just a really great job. sure there was some machina stuff in there that kind of dragged, but some of the ones he dug ou treally impressed. don't have that feeling here. that's fine, it's his thing, he should continue doing as he sees best, but i'm glad i didn't seriously consider attending

hoping the adore reissue delivers, have been looking forward to that one at least as much as mcis and tafh. gotta give him credit for those

Show was fun. I updated on FB because I'm old and that's the only social media I use. Trots, Sarah, and others were fucking hilarious commenting on my posts so that made it worth it.

B+/B show. My friend and I sat right next to Peter (fake producer), although I can't remember if he was more of a blamo douche or if there was a crossover with Netphoria.

And there was a couple who were making out non stop for literally half the first part of the set. People were dyyyying around us, some taking pics, Peter's girlfriend or wife or whatever was being funny about it.

Now,,, the long drive back to KCMO. :(

There was a song called Burnt Orange Black with Ex-Cops. Might have been their song. There was another song the Ex-Cops chick sang that had Billy's name in it (I think?).

This is actually a new song:

“BURNT ORANGE-BLACK’ was next, and this is one of those songs that has that timeless ring to it. Slow, languid, but powerful, with a set of changes you could jam all night on. But…Howard said, “It’s no single,” and we agreed. Not that every song has to be a single, mind you, but ‘single’ here is code word for’ it could be better,’ or ‘this idea has more potential that it’s showing.’ With that I tried adding a stuttering guitar figure, and presto! Change-o! We at least had something that sounded radio-worthy, which is funny considering the staccato stuff was the only change. Shows you how thin the premise is a good song vs a great one. Etc, etc. Score: 3-0.

Was that the full version of muzzle? He just kept repeating that one stanza throughout those two minutes. Muzzle has some of my favorite lyrics so I'm not sure how I feel about it, but the music sounds nice (except his singing).

Is it me or does it seem like there's a lot of talking throughout the concert? It's like the music was a backdrop to their evening.

"Piped-in samples also boosted "Thirty-Three" and "1979," part of a suite of stripped-down "Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness" compositions that displayed Corgan's growth as a singer. Replacing volume with nuance and screaming with suggestiveness, he put the lyrics on equal footing with beautiful melodies. Focusing on such details, he drew out extra poignancy and vulnerability, particularly on the fragile note-interlaced twirl of "Galapogos" and piano-based confession "To Forgive."

'Piped in samples' means pre recorded drum loops or whatever. 'Stripped down' means he played the songs without the heavy instrumentation present on the album.

Unless I missed something here about each bit of the song compiled together?

He sold out. That's all. In that article, the mgmt of ravinia were pushing him to play certain songs, at least that's my interpretation of that article with ravinias owner. They wanted him to play the hits.

Not fair to have fans go crazy with dream set lists and then deliver with a greatest hits show. IMHO. Even to tease with the idea of "whir" and the winning set list thing, made everyone feel like this was gonna be unique. Unique-er at least. Having to go through the spfc.org list to figure out what songs to play. He could have just asked any random music exec what to play, which looks like what he did here. He did he exact thing he said he would never do. That's not like billy!

No, you're right. I read it too fast, as I was on my way out, and I thought it said he played samples of each song for the suite.

In that case, not thrilled with what he did to muzzle. Somehow he managed to make such a hopeful song sound like it's drowning in despair and resignation.

A small handful isn't 8 singles...

Eh. It's not even half the set.

Fans would have to be pretty naive to not expect some hits for a show like this, ESPECIALLY a career retrospective. The only shot we have of him playing only deep cut is if he throws together a one off at his coffee shop.

Overall it was a great set that built up from very minimal performances to a very fun electronic section that ended with Ava Adore and got everybody on their feet. The only problem was the last section of songs played in a folkier way with guests (Sierra Swan and Ex Cops); it just felt weaker and unnecesary. I guess Corgan wanted to end the show with his friends but it just felt weird and weak compared to the rest of the set that was really strong and tight.

Does anyone know anything about the song As Time Draws Near? I cannot place it. It did sound somewhat like Mama from the residencies, but I guess it could also be from the Chicago songs.

Forgotten Child
08-31-2014, 04:33 PM
As Time Draws Near is a cover, a traditional song.

I really enjoyed it, I also think the setlist is a little obvious tho. Most of those songs have being played over the previous years.

For example, He could have replaced Today or Disarm by Rocket, which is also a single/hit, but a less obvious choice. Crush, Whir or Suffer would perfectly fit in this setlist.

This was a unique opportunity to play rarer songs, but Billy chose to play a safe set.

That said, apart from Lonely Is The Name, I enjoyed every song!

No real issues with the set. As others have said, he was bound to play some hits. It is an amphitheater show after all.

I am glad to see he pulled out "The Rose March." That still remains one of the best songs from 2007-2008 and one of the best songs he's written since bringing Smashing Pumpkins back.

Never been keen on "Pinwheels" though. I do not know why he keeps pimping that song; it's one of the most forgettable he's written. If he wanted a TbK/Oceania era song that, in my opinion, would have had the same vibe, I'd say "Tom, Tom" or "A Stitch in Time."

Beyond that though, no complaints at all. Cool to see Lonely is the Name (I REALLY wanted that one to be on Teargarden by Kaleidyscope) and a debut of a new song. Debut of "Methusela" is cool as well.

After hearing the MCIS suite in sequence (with the full version of muzzle), I quite liked it, though I found it a bit too depressing; it was heartwrenching at times.

I really liked Now and Then. I actually wish he'd play more of his solo album material. The duets didn't sound quite right to me, didn't really care for them, but at least Billy had fun with it. The guitars through most of the songs sounded great, too. It sounded like he was playing an Eruption tease during Ava Adore.

Hell, I don't know why Billy didn't go down this direction when Jimmy left in the first place.

The mellon collie set was more in the spirit of the demos than the record. Methusela, Thirty Three, and 1979 used the original drum machine samples with only the acoustic parts live. Mellon Collie the song was played the way the demo appeared, a bit faster and with different changes.

To Forgive and Muzzle were piano, and had me wondering if the songs started off that way even though to my knowledge there's no piano demo of them circulating.

It's hard to describe the feeling at the show during Galapogos, it was incredibly moving to just hear a simple, great song played straight with feeling. The crowd seemed to agree, there was a spontaneous standing ovation. Billy joked "don't get too excited, you haven't seen the last third."

And sure enough that's where things got sketchy, several songs were just backing tracks and Billy awkwardly singing with no guitar. Even Ava Adore, only Jeff had a guitar, but Matt Walker made it come together.

My favorite part is he made some poor roadie schlep the whole modsynth monstrosity out for five minutes of bleeps over a meandering go-nowhere version of World's Fair. It sat there the whole show basically to look pretty.

It's hard to describe the feeling at the show during Galapogos, it was incredibly moving to just hear a simple, great song played straight with feeling. The crowd seemed to agree, there was a spontaneous standing ovation.

Sometimes the backing tracks were louder than billy. I don't know why it is so weird to think you could miss him. The view of him was blocked sometimes.

I loved the synths in the background it added interesting ambiance. Especiially for now and then, when the lights came down it looked like the future embrace tour. That was a brilliant moment.

he did that because amc was filming for the show, also to promote the wrestling thing to people who live in chicago. I didn't really give a fuck about that. let him have his dudes in short shorts with shake weights.

Ok, so he was promoting his wrestle-mania project. With AMC there filming, that makes more sense. BUT, we know that. I would have to guess 75% of people there did not. They were like, WTF? I would assume. That must have been a weird scene with everyone looking around at each other like WTF! And the shake weight thing just added to the cheese factor.

And to do it on a self proclaimed BC's favorite song, a serious song, also cheesed it up.

There was cheese on those fries, that's for sure.

I wonder what Monte thinks about it. Monte, what are your thoughts? At least let us know you're alive. And BTW, Monte, Crestfallen sucks now that its all Blank page. "The Why is not important"? It is to ME! :(

It could have been much worse. It was a strange moment but at least they were mostly inaudible from the recordings I heard. I'm still not sure what this AMC wrestling show is really supposed to be about. They've been filming Billy playing a few songs, which I'm not quite sure how that fits into wrestling.

Actually she was nice to me. But some said that she was giving them cut eye at zuzus. But I think if you are trying to get in her bf's pants that might be why. Also, even if you are not if she senses you wanting to get close to him she will not be happy. I think she is funny cause she is so tough and aggressive. She is definitely hardworking, Bill is lucky to have her around.

This was a beautiful night and far beyond what I had expected. The youtube videos really dont do it justice as the night was beautiful and the crowd energy was more positive than any SP show I've ever been to. (only seen SP2)

For me, as a fan of the more gothic, Adore/Machina II vibe... it was fucking awesome to see BC in pure goth rock star mode during the mini set of "Now and then", "The Beginning is the End", "The Crying Tree of Mercury" and "Ava Adore." Especially after the subdued, confessional first half. I thought "Prairie Song" and "World's Fair" were both quite captivating, though I was unfamiliar with them. "For Your Love" was amazing and my girlfriend who is unfamiliar with SP/Zwan/BC thought it was a highlight. The Mellon Collie suite was pretty great, though the 1979 rendition was a bit flat, and Muzzle and 33 didn't quite hit the heights they have in them...though "To Forgive", "Methuselah," and "Galapogos" were spellbinding.

It was playful, eccentric, dark, and really summed up what I respect about BC as a songwriter. Plus it was great to see him really enjoying himself, relieved of the pressure of trying to recreate a "Smashing Pumpkins" experience.

I have to say it was leagues beyond the SP2 shows I've been to, although I thought the 2008 tour was really cool and forward-looking, and the 2011 tour was really beautiful and nostalgic.
