Some of us don't have that much to live for.

Mind you here i'm not talking about me, I don't have much to live for but I don't give a shit about basketball. There's heritage moments tv ads by the governement here trying to make us care about shit related to Canada's history and legacy, one of them (that's been running for 20 years probably) teaches us a Canadian invented basketball. But the thing is he was in boston and had been living there for years and was by then an American citizen. how the fuck does it count? It doesn't. It was invented by an American born in Canada. big deal. Not the same thing.

I hate to break it to you Trots, but the NBA is 100% rigged. I've just been picking up on this. A long time gambler has been mentoring me. It sounds insane but it's really easy to tell who's going to win just by looking at the lines released by the Las Vegas gaming commission and which way the lines move allocated by the percentage of wagers coming in. Like the line today was San Antonio -5. That was just BEGGING people to take Miama, and the majority of bettors did, and of course San Antonio went on to easily cover the spread.

If you think I'm crazy, I'll correctly predict the outcome of each game in accurate fashion for this series sometime before tip off.

seriously if it's that easy then he should be a millionaire by the end of this series

i also like how it's going to be fixed whether or not the line says miami or san antonio, that's real funny to me. so if miami won last night, it'd be because that was who vegas picked, but because san antonio won it's because the spread "begged" for people to take miami

it's so completely convenient. confirmation bias plain and simple but he's too dumb to see it.

how common is it to see an even distribution of talent among the players of a successful team rather than to have it concentrated in one or two players?

Trotskilicious
06-06-2014, 12:24 PM
i think it's more uncommon to have a team like the former (e.g. san antonio spurs) than to have the latter (Oklahoma City Thunder, Miami Heat)

Jordan's teams were notoriously top-heavy. A lot of times great players tend to bring greatness out of others, the Shaq/Kobe lakers were notorious for turning also-rans like rick fox and derek fisher into solid contributors. The Pierce/Garnett/Ray Allen celtics were on paper top heavy but somehow they brought up a lot of dudes like Rajon Rondo, Kendrick Perkins, Glen Davis to become a really strong team top to bottom. it really all depends

i'd say normally when you have a situation like James/Wade/Bosh there's literally not enough money left over to pay for a solid supporting cast so you wind up with a bunch of worn out junk at the end of the road like rashad lewis, old ray allen and dudes like birdman who (in his case unfairly) is on his "second chance" because they just can't pay good rotation dudes the wage they demand

Trotskilicious
06-06-2014, 12:26 PM
I think so. If you look at other great teams, missing their key guy probably doesn't make them stop having a shot at a series win.

not a basketball fan, obvs, because this is just not factual.

if there was no tim duncan/tony parker, we wouldn't have a shot. no kevin durant or westbrook, no shot. seriously, you cannot win the title without your star players, even if you have two and are missing one (see: thunder, Oklahoma city 2013) you just cannot. it's 10 guys at most and most playoff teams are running with 7 or 8 guys regularly. the biggest dude on that roster cannot be lost, this isn't baseball or the nfl. basketball is almost like some kind of weird hybrid of an individual sport and a team sport sometimes.

basketball is a sport where missing your star player is the difference between being a playoff contender and a lottery squad. San Antonio lost David Robinson off a squad that was regularily a western conference contender and they had plummeted to the cellar that season to the point of winning the lottery and being blessed with Timothy Duncan in the draft the following year.

Look at how bad cleveland has been post 'bron. Anytime the biggest player goes down it's practically the end of your season. Somtimes they can hobble along (bulls both w/o jordan and currently without rose) and play pretty good but they are very far from actual title contenders.

sppunk
06-06-2014, 01:10 PM
I agree with what you say. But all those teams with one guy gone can stil compete well. Without Lebron I don't see Miami able to do so. Wade can't be the sole star IMO and after him it's pretty mediocre compared to those other depths. SA, those Bulls teams, the Knicks, Detroit, LA, etc all had much better role players.I don't mean those teams would be title contended but I think they would still have a decent shot at winning first round series.

Without James would this Miami team honestly be anything more than a 7 or 8 seed at best?

Trotskilicious
06-06-2014, 02:36 PM
uh i dunno the east is pretty horrible to be perfectly honest. without LBJ i mean...i'd put them on the same level as brooklyn probably, so i guess you're still technically correct 6-8 seed, yeah.

they wouldn't make the playoffs or even have a winning record in the west

sppunk
06-06-2014, 03:23 PM

i dunno, without duncan i think the spurs would be seriously hobbled. I think we could manage without parker because of our depth, and the fact that ginobs and bellinelli can run an offense in addition to cory joseph and patty mills at point, but it would be a 4-6 seed in the west

you know i want to also point out that sometimes a team with no depth can be absolutely obliterated just by losing someone that plays one of their thinnest positions, even if he's not their best guy

OKC had both durant and westbrook and they got mercilessly pounded inside by the spurs without serge ibaka, then managed to look competent again once he came back

i seriously underestimated how good ibaka really is, no more. he makes people around him better, namely kendrick perkins who is one of the worst starters in the NBA these days, but with ibaka around to be athletic under the basket he looks fairly competent.

but yeah thanks for trying to take a huge shit on one of the few things i love unconditionally

I've watched a ton of ball for years, big fan. I believe that NBA and Vegas are tied together in a way that other sports aren't though. I can always spot a line that's way off base and always hit it up and watch the game and it's always comical to watch the outcome playout before my eyes.

I hit a line hard during the Indiana vs Miami series... It was something like Miami -8 for the heat at home... just ridiculous, and of course everyone was laying HUGE money on Indiana thinking they had a steal. During the game Miami was down by like 16 or 17 in the 3rd, and I kept on telling my buddies that it's rigged and that I guarantee that Miami wins by more than 8 and they ended up winning by more than 10.

In my mind, the only big time sports that aren't rigged at all is MLB and NHL. I love NFL to death, but you see these lines being acutely exact all of the time and you see fishy reffing and all of that jazz that leads to the "desired outcome".

It sounds crazy, but if you wanna know the outcome of the game, just look at the Vegas lines and look at the percentage of what moneys coming in on each side. Basketball has to be the easiest sport to rig, cause you can easily rig a 5 point spread in seconds. These guys are all just performers making excellent money, this whole charade that they actually care about winning a "championship" is ridiculous.

I've been told that Michael Jordan was one of the marquee players who did his own thing, and refused to participate in the fix and of course he got booted the fuck right out of the league, and his beloved father got murdered shortly after.

It's big business and millions of dollars are on the line each game, these players are all essentially puppets. I'm of the belief that when the books are balanced they have the odd game where they actually legitimately compete. But most of these guys are all coming up from the gutter and living the high life. It's literally all about the money and the "entertainment" value.

ref bribing by teams is actually a concern in soccer, what you're talking about was a ref that was exposed for being bribed to favor certain teams in world cup qualifiers 5 or 6 years ago and not even that long ago, several Serie A teams were exposed for doing the same and penalized for it. Juventus was one of them.

there was also an NBA ref a few years ago that was exposed because he was a gambling addict that was attempting to fix games to benefit himself. mostly what it is is "point shaving" which is usually to get teams to cover the spread

i mean, corruption and gambling is a major concern in sports but the idea that the league and its star players are in on it, and even more hilariously a "non disclosure agreement" to not talk about the cheating is just so alex jones i can't even handle it

in fact fuzzball's comment about the non disclosure agreement reminds me of that part in the wire where stringer notices shamrock taking minutes of the new day co-op meetings and he's like "Nigga, is you takin notes on a criminal fuckin conspiracy? What the fuck is you thinkin?"

I get that, I'm thinking maybe the marquee top guys are in on it. Look, I don't have the answers, but I often times see games end in silly ways in order to cover the spread to benefit Vegas. My best example comes from a game a year or 2 ago. It was the Spurrs Vs Miami. The Vegas line was something like -5.5 Miami, Huge public money was coming in on the heat because the Spurrs had a rough travel schedule at that point. LATER in the day Popovich (the Spurrs head coach) announces that he's sitting out all of his star players. This creates a sense of havoc in the league. The line then move to something like -12 Miami... People are pouring in money in on Miami because theres no way that the Spurrs have any chance in hell against the Heat without their starting line up playing right?

Well hilariously enough Miami, the best team in the league, only manages to win against the Spurrs scrub lineup by 5 points... So the Spurrs and their garbage lineup don't only cover the NEW spread, they cover the ORIGINAL spread with nothing but a scrub lineup. VEGAS CLEANS UP!!!

fuzzyroes
06-07-2014, 05:19 PM
Popovich ends up getting fined a SHITLOAD of money... And for what? Deciding to give his star players a day off? But apparently the NBA decided that "he wasn't allowed to do that".

And you guys wanna tell me the NBA is squeaky clean. That was the most blatant fix that I've witnessed in quite some time.

and pop does that kind of shit all the time because he's figured out that when you have a bunch of old guys it's best to play them maybe 60 games a year

also they had a big game against memphis like two days later, which is more important since it's in-division and in-conference so matters more for the playoff seed than a game against someone in another conference

there are 35 ways a team can gain 4 victories in a 7 game series. I won't list them.

number of ways the spurs can win the series given their 1st game win: 20

number of ways the heat can win given the one spurs victory: 15

How likely is it that fuzzyroes chooses the right permutation of wins and losses.

Come on man, you really think that with all of the Spurs starters out that Miami could only manage to win by a measly 2 buckets? Give me a break. HUGE money was going in on the Heat, and with Pop pulling all of his starters, Vegas should have took a HUGE hit... But of course the Spurs miraculously cover the spread. when i watched my favorite football team for 25 years beat the undefeated patriots i didn't think my sports watching life could have gotten any sweeter

now spurs are on the precipice of destroying the hype monster from the corporate black lagoon. the NBA by michael bay. the miami heat

the only thing that would have been better is to watch kobe bryant pout and fail like dwayne wade

if spurs win on sunday i'm pretty much ready to die.

I'll be shocked if the spurs don't win Sunday. That crowd will be insane.

Make that run even bigger now, Spurs now up 21.

Trots don't tip over any cars tonight.

It's a surgical beatdown. And shows how important a bench is.

this team is embarassing...

watching wade fail so very hard while ginobili plays great is just one of the sweetest things...the only thing better would be to watch kobe fail like this against the spurs

WHY NOT US??

- L. James

So does the pathetic MIA showing persuade James to bolt? Wade's massive contract handcuffs them to resign him and build an actual team with a functioning bench.

good question. what's keeping him in Miami? Lebron - Kevin Love / Carmelo in LA is looking more and more likely.

it's nice that espn allows us to watch lebron's ego collapse from 7 different camera angles as he sits on the bench.

So, Duncan is a Top 5 player ever?

SA's worst season since drafting him was 50-32. They've won 5 titles and never finished below 2nd place.
