It's the best Pop song Corgan wrote.

Going back to SD, I really think the acoustic studio version of 'Mayonaise' could have been a big single.

Mayonaise gets played on the radio all the time here

always has

but if reading comprehension is not your strong suit: he said acoustic, for some reason.

acoustic reworkings of songs like mayonaise is fucking dumb. the whole appeal of that goddamn song is the gigantic guitars from space

Isn't there a studio-acoustic version of Mayonaise that was released on Rarities & B-sides?

Isn't there a studio-acoustic version of Mayonaise that was released on Rarities & B-sides?I think there is.. it's basically the vocal track from the original song with an acoustic instrumental of the song.

But the acoustic version of Mayonaise was on the original verison. "mother weep the years I'm missing" They probably have a track under all the electric guitars with just the acoustic.

I want to hear acoustic Silverfuck

It would need to be completely rearranged to make it on the radio, but yes, absolutely.

The acoustic outtake version from 'still becoming apart'. Yes, it's just the vocal track with acoustic guitar added (aside from the 12 string acoustic that was already there during the bridge). In my opinion it would have been a good single for radio because it's more immediate without the extended intro and outro, and you really get the full impact of the lyrics and the prettiness of the vocals without all of the sonic bombast of the Siamese Dream version. With that said I still love the original version too.

One of my Top Ten Smashing Pumpkins songs for sure. I was very happy that Billy spoke very highly of it in the liner notes of The Areoplane Flies High.

A few years ago, back when the Smashing Pumpkins Web site had daily updates, they interviewed Jeff and he mentioned "Pennies" as being the one old Smashing Pumpkins song he'd love to see played again. I had some hopes it would be dusted off, but it still hasn't.

I don't think they ever played it live. It's really pretty.

Eye, Tear, Once upon a time, Starz, Beautiful, Porcelina...should have been singles.

Was a single, fuck no, maybe, Anything from ZG should be entirely forgotten, no it starts off too awkward and just isn't single material (That bridge tho), this song is like the opposite of a single seriously nothing says single more than almost a full minute of soft ambient build up

The simple subject matter, that catchy guitar hook, the short length and standard song structure.

Fuck no. Plus you weren't alive at the time. No one would enjoy corgam proclaiming "pennies for sale" at the end. Pennies is a real weak song.

There's a Lollapalooza show during which Billy said that he heard "Mayonaise" on the radio without the intro and without the solo. Apparently, some radios took it upon themselves to make it "more immediate" in the US at the time...

As for "Pennies"...One of the great b-sides. Love it.

Trotskilicious

i think it's pretty obvious that the song was written as a pop song for the radio due to its shortness and teh lengthy outro

i thought it was supposed to be some wordplay pennies/penny's like "penny's for sale", referring to the girlfriend or whatever.

why is it so objectionable in the first place

"Pennies for sale"

Means like "pissing in the wind" or just doing something meaningless.
What can you sell pennies for?

Elphenor

I think it's a really good outro. He's saying how pointless his whining is but he's doing it anyway

Yeah. It was in that Guitar World breakdown of TAFH songs. I love how backhanded the song is.

"One of those songs that I wrote in 10 minutes and can't seem to shake off. I like this song a lot, and find myself humming it about the house, as it is a very rare example of actual Pumpkins humor in a song. Recorded live to a 8-track cassette, with a few acoustic 12-string overdubs just to give it a little zing. This was our second choice for a take; the better take was lost when the engineer forgot to press 'record.'" -BC (Guitar World 1/97)

that last part is unfortunate

Not to be a complete smartass, but it technically was a single, just the b-side. In the old days when they would send out these 7" singles the b-side was usually just filler but could have been played by the radio if they wanted. It usually was ignored, unless it was the Beatles. Of course, the single with Pennies had like 6 songs on it or something so it's really more of an EP.

I always wondered what the point of singles were when the album replaced the old singles format. Just marketing shit I guess. "We, THE RECORD COMPANY, think that this is the best song. Push it at nauseum on your radio station. The rest of the album is shit and can be discarded."

Pennies did not have what it takes to be a commercially successful radio single in 1996. That's not necessarily a bad thing though. #Old Man Crotch Rocket 1996 FUCK YEAH
