Anyone here ever work a job where your hours vary tremendously?
My job has work a complete random bullshit schedule every week.

I had to start at 3am, then the next day at 12pm, then the next day at 6am.
So I'm always tired or awake at 2am like right now.

Yeah that's bullshit. I've had jobs like that though, when I was your age. Now I work at a store where I can tell them when I'm available and they'll give me whatever I want. The worst I get is like working until 10pm and coming back in at 9am on a Sat/Sun. But I can't really remember the last time that happened.

If I had reduced my availability right away after being hired as "open schedule" it would have looked bad. But now they value me and will work with me.

So basically: Assert yourself or find a different job.

in my experience managers who are scared of firing people make shifts like that for people they want to get rid of

Elphenor
05-11-2014, 03:32 PM
I'm about to get a promotion actually.

I work at a grocery store as a bagger and just general work mule for all the departments to drop whatever shitty part of their job they don't want to do.
"There's an inspection today, and the baseboards in the walk-in freezer need to be cleaned. That's gonna fucking suck! Let's get the bag boy to come in at 3am to do it."

I'm getting moved to Deli though, but there's only spots open because everyone who gets moved there quits within a few months. So yeah, maybe they're trying to get rid of me.

The exploding boy
05-11-2014, 03:50 PM
Doesn't that job make you want to kill yourself? I know it would for me.

I worked in a convenience store for a year ages ago. I'd say worst job ever but actually not true, I've had worse. Probably the worst I ever tried was picking raspberries in fields. You know that scene in Napoleon Dynamite where he goes to work on some egg farm and it sucks and he gets home to like 6 dollars? There's pretty much how this was, including the awkward break for lunch. They ask you will you come back tomorrow, hmm, what do you think? No wonder they hire Mexicans. No white privileged citizen in their right mind would lower themselves to this.

Elphenor
05-11-2014, 03:54 PM
It's so much better than my last shitty job, that I don't even find it that bad.

I don't think there's a job I can get that doesn't suck. I'm starting college very soon, so idk, eventually I'll get to do something that doesn't require scrubbing baseboards.

we have a strange shift thing at my job.

12 hour shifts, 3 or 4 days on, then 3 or 4 days off. each shift period you switch off doing night and day shift.

so you work mon-thurs 7am-7pm, have a few days off, then come back and work 7pm-7am for some days. and keep flip flopping like that.

it's kinda weird but it also kinda works. you always have a 3 day weekend and never work more than 4 days in a row, sometimes less, and night shift is a breeze compared to day so everyone takes turns with shift loads to make it fair.

The Deli sucks. Only department in my store that consistently gets complaints. Everyone hates working there. I wouldn't call it a promotion, even if they do pay you more. They are constantly looking for people to train to pull some shifts over there because everyone quits. No thanks.

You can't tell them you can't work before 6am or something? That's not an unreasonable boundary, no?

They are probably using scheduling software, if it's a decent sized store/chain. It's just putting you wherever it wants. They can limit where it puts you, but that might make you have less hours but it's not like they can't put more in manually if they want to.

what did you do

I worked at a shipping warehouse on 2nd shift. I started on 3rd shift and was there for 8 months before moving to 2nds...I just couldn't handle it...so I asked to be moved and took the first available spot.

Anyway, the work on 3rds is laid back but different from 2nds, which is faster paced.

To be continued...

it was that or 8 in the morning with no weekends

although one thing is that they offer "vto" which they open up all the time for you to just go home at a certain time and use your PTO...i'm hoping i can use this because SWANS plays my first week out of training and i've already missed them on the last two tours

i go to school from 10a-2p Mon - Thur, work 4 out of 5 days (usually, sometimes all 5) Tue, Wed, Fri, Sat, Sun. Two nights during the week (5-9:30 usually, sometimes to 11:30), and generally mid shifts on the weekends (somewhere between 8 am and 8 pm) with some rare exceptions. 25-30 hours total per week.

We don't have set schedules but you can put in availability, so I'm off Mon/Thur and only after 5 Tues/Wed. I am completely their bitch Fri-Sun.

I'm usually in the building 9-2 Mon - Thu, then 9:30-12 on Sunday.

I have a random (non existent) work schedule when I have to organise something for an event... So sometimes I'm up all night and in all weekend. But it's flexible too, so if I have errands to run, I can usually leave early or come in late, during a normal week. The family-friendly nature of working for a church offsets the minimum wage pay, for the most part.

I would answer and then just tell them no. Now that I got promoted I might consider coming in if they really needed me since there's only like 8 of us that can do it vs. 30 cashiers or whatever could do my old job. But just by setting down the pattern of not coming in I know if they were to call it'd be because it was the last resort.

Also I never tell them why. I figure I don't owe a part time job a reason why I can't drop everything and come in. Honestly I think it earned me some respect points with my manager. I do my job well and if they need to switch around shifts a day or two in advance, that's fine as long as it doesn't conflict with prior school/doctor commitments.

there are jobs where they don't act like mistakes are the end of the world and have a positive approach to employee feedback. i don't understand these places that think a whip is going to motivate anyone worth two tugs of a dead dog's dick
