This documentary has been a long time coming. Kevin Shields himself would be impressed with the time it has taken and the number of delays there have been in its completion.

Wtf, this Veronica Grey/fysche character (his "ex-wife") even messed with Corgan's imdb profile.

Every book by Fysche features the Smashing Pumpkins. Billy Corgan eventually made her (Veronica Grey) one of his muses for every album after 2001, including songs he works on with Courtney Love like "Pacific Coast Highway" &"Loserdust.

Even though she has had more songs written for and about her than anyone else alive, Veronica Grey did not qualify for a Guinness World Record by being a modern day muse. Guinness World Records felt that although Grey is credited on the IMDB pages of Robert Smith of The Cure, Andrew VanWyngarden of MGMT, Andrew Fletcher of Depeche Mode, Vince Clarke of Erasure as well as the bands of musicians mentioned earlier in this paragraph for partially inspiring their songs, Guinness World Records felt that it was enough for her to be featured on these sites and did not deserve the official title.

What a fucking fruitcake.

Sell it and get a bf-2

If you stick a dummy plug into output A you can get 100% wet sound with your cabling going out of output B (as pictured). Might not sound that great but it's just a common trick for stereo pedals. Just going out of B with nothing in A will make the pedal not work.

I love shoegaze, but i get your point : songwriting wasn't the genre's forte but there were gems in many of these bands' repertoires. It had more to do with a vibe and atmosphere you have to get into. And I don't think there's any middle ground : i totally understand how so many people can get bored listening to shoegaze!
I find it amazing that this genre is reevaluated nowadays and it makes me laugh when pitchfork type, hipster bands, doing no more than recycling Ride/MBV and such, are praised and even getting more recognition than some bands from the early 90s https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n7chK7efc3M . When I was introduced to this type of music in 95 thru an older guy who was a Ride fan, it was already passť, it was gone, and whenever it was mentioned, it was despised. And when i went back and read some press about this type of band when they were around, i found out they were despised even then! Except for MBV, mostly.

My Vitriol would be bigger than they have been if their first album came out now! Because they had some anthemic songs and also a shoegaze sound in 2000. And the two don't always gel. No one was doing that then. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_q4Qcqpu02A

Shoegaze wasn't just about MBV and Ride, there were plenty of other good bands in the genre.

Slowdive (arguably better than MBV)
Catherine Wheel (better than Ride IMO)
Verve (first album)
Swervedriver
Chapterhouse
Pale Saints
Boo Radleys
Lush
Adorable
Curve

Yeah, I agree. Its a lot to do with a vibe/feel as opposed to songwriting/hooks etc. But that's where I think the genre got kinda lost. MBV and Ride had some downright great songs and that's how I wanna remember that genre, not for the thousands of bands that came afterwards with 7/8 minutes of one riff and someone moaning over the top.

My Vitriol were a great band, I always thought they had some similarities to SP as well as the early 90s shoegaze bands.

Maybe you're dyslexic? Because that's not what I wrote at all. The argument was on the debate of the word "noise" in the title of the documentary. I argued that MBV and Ride were the only shoegaze bands to properly be "noisy" whereas the majority of the rest were ambient in the vein of Slowdive etc.

If we're gonna get into it too....i see no reason why someone overweight and ugly and living in their moms basement could not also be an actual authority on music. They're not mutually exclusive. Some things are, but this, i can't see it. At best the argument could be made they're probably still young, but if you're like mid 30's, you probably had time to experience a lot of music from the comfort of your mom's basement. There's a lot of things one can become an expert about without ever living their basement.

Ride are my favourite band from all of the 'shoegaze' bands. IMO they don't sound much like MBV or Slowdive at all. Their first album and early EPs really stand the test of time I love all their albums although they did get less 'edgy' with each release. OX4 from their second album is one of the best songs ever. Live at Reading is my favourite live album ever. ******ce Colbert's drumming is every bit as thrilling to me as Jimmy's :)

Amen to that bro ;)

I love ******ce and I love Ride - less than you in that i can't stand "Tarentula". What a letdown. Ride was a shoegaze band with actual SONGS. They did not rely on effects only, even though they were masters at that too.

The guy who introduced me to shoegaze back in 95 was a Ride fan and was in a band who was basically aping them (or trying to). He also used to be a Cure fan , which i was and still am - and he told me how these bands were "offsprings of The Cure" and how Robert supported them. It all made sense ("leave them all behind" is so curesque, "Wish" shows the noisy pop/shoegaze influence on Robert Smith and i already loved this album). So i started listening to that.He got me into "Nowhere", "Going Blank Again", "Smile", I borrowed his Brixton academy videotape and a bootleg and my head was blown. There are pictures of me in 96 wearing a Ride t.shirt, needless to say, i was the only one in my town at that point :D

I have met Mark Gardener a few years back backstage at a friend's show. He lives in the south of France now and has actually written a song with my friend! So i was hanging out backstage and there he was! I was very intimidated but we did talk. You mentioned "OX4" (what a beautiful song). Mark told me that Chris Martin of Coldplay had confessed when he met him that his band copied this song for "Yellow" - the chord progression is somewhat the same. Chris Martin is a fanboy.

7/8 minutes of one riff and someone moaning over the top.

that sounds great to be honest

Shoegaze wasn't just about MBV and Ride, there were plenty of other good bands in the genre.

Slowdive (arguably better than MBV)
Catherine Wheel (better than Ride IMO)
Verve (first album)
Swervedriver
Chapterhouse
Pale Saints
Boo Radleys
Lush
Adorable
Curve
etc. etc.

If we're only talking about bands from the early 90's, then I would add Lilys (American MBV feet-kissers, wrote some 8 minute one riff songs with moaning over top) and Ecstasy of Saint Theresa (credited with being the first Czech band to release a record independently, wrote some 8 minute one riff songs with moaning over top)

when you've got a good riff, there's no reason to end it so quickly.

Love that song too, I wish he'd put it on one of the reissues like Pisces.

I'm watching it right now. It's not very well done from a film stand-point, pretty amateurish, but it's interesting and has a lot interviews from the legends

Listening to Robert Smith talk about worshiping Loveless is pretty cool

I just watched this the other day so I've been listening to a lot of shoegazey stuff recently like the Medicine reissues of Shot Forth Self Living and The Buried Life.

Anyone ever hear that remix Billy did of "She Knows Everything" with Jimmy on drums? I'd love to hear it but I can't find it anywhere online.

I guess though it had been in production for so long, and had accumulated so many interviews, that they had to see it through to the end no matter how it turned out.
