Great album. How can anyone actually hate Green Day? Dookie's dope but Insomniac is their jewel, man.

That's true. But I don't really pay much attention to their whole new image or whatever. The new music isn't great either, but theres always 2 or 3 good songs on each of their new releases... American idiot had about 4. As a music fan that suffices.

haha , I had that poster too.

I dunno. I think Green Day holds a special bond in my heart. They were the first band that REALLY got me into music. I was 8 years old and heard Basket Case for the first time and had one of those epiphany moments... Ever since, Musics been my life. I wouldn't have started listening to the radio and discovered SP if it wasn't for Green Day.

Obviously Insomniac isn't some fresh album for me. But I can still turn it on after quite some time without listening to it and fully enjoy it. It's the album of theirs that's stood the test of time the most in my opinion.

I was super into Green Day in freshman/sophomore year of high school and at one point they were my 2nd favorite band behind the Pumpkins, but then they suddenly became boring to me in junior year when I got into Sonic Youth, Pixies, Smiths, etc. It's unoffensive listening and I have nothing against them, but it's been many, many years since I listened to one of their albums

Didn't read past the first few posts but I loved this album and would say it's their best. Brain stew jaded or geekl stink breath whatever was on the Godzilla soundtrack plus the outdo song still gets played on the radio around here.

i think the test of an album is 'if this came out today would it sound good.'

most of green days albums fit this bill. if they were to release their albums chronologically starting now i think they would be bigger than they were back then. less competition for what they do.

as much as I haven't given a shit about GD since about 1998, I learned to play bass partly to this record, dookie and the first two so they will ALWAYS KINDA HOLD A SPECIAL PLACE IN MY HEART. It's like oh I know I should hate this but I kinda can't. still you know i'd probably hide them if someone came over and they were around.

ill say this, in restrospect, once Sum 41 and Blink 182 came out, you realized that GD might not have been THAT bad after all... but they allowed this to happen though so fuck em.

Meh... Not sure why you'd be embarrassed. Dookie and Insomniac were pretty much landmark albums of the time and both hold up pretty well today. Nimrod has some good tunes on it too. Hitchin a Ride was a pretty bad ass single.

Blink 182's pretty good for what they are too. They definitely have some catchy, fun songs.

Yeah I kind of went through a pop-punk phase when I was 15-16 too. I revisited a bunch of those C.D.s years ago and most of them haven't aged well. But it lead me into other cool bands like NOFX, SNFU, Lagwagon, Vandals etc

I used to play Dookie on repeat while I was playing Warcraft against my friend over my dial-up modem on a 486 PC. I still like Dookie and cover Basket Case a lot with my band. It's just a hell of a lot of fun to play and it makes me happy. It reminds me of times when life was a hell of a lot easier. Oh, and hell of a lot. Hell. Of. A. Lot.

I love Basket Case. That was the song that did it for me man. I wasn't even really into music as a kid but when that song first came on it was like a religious experience. My mother took me out to the next day to buy the dookie Cassete tape and I became instantly obsessed. Of course that opened the floodgates and lead to me getting into all sorts of other albums: Siamese dream, Smash, Superunkown etc.

I recently bought a few vintage 94 Green Day tour shirts off a collector who needed some money. 20 bucks a pop. One of the shirts was the basket case shirt. I wear that shit with pride http://www.alt-tshirts.com/files/class_2/images/large/2_16789_581599_1345501392.png

my main problem with nimrod is that the hit singles were the ones about falling off the wagon (i hadn't even been ON a wagon at that point in my life or come close to one) and then the acoustic ballad used in every tv show/high school prom/graduation ever

i'd never been hooked on/seen/or done meth either but at least insomniac felt more relatable

Yeah. With pop punk I draw the line at anything that came out after Green Day and I even draw the line at Green Day post lame ass emo resurrection (American idiot and everything after. This record was only big because they suddenly wore eyeliner. I dare you to prove otherwise)

If GD were posers, the pop punk that came after were posers modeling themselves on posers.

Not really I said :if" because I don't believe in this shit but that's what you know, people who believe in punk cred say. It WAS pop punk for fuck sake. But somehow it seems to me that band like Green Day were still kinda just intelligent enough or maybe should I say not too stupid and also had some sort of spark there in their songwriting method despite it being very much the same and derivative.

Whereas when I hear bands like Blink 182 or Sum 41 I just hear dumb as a brick. Both lyrically and musically. It seems kinda hilarious to say but GD had some...nuances.

And as dumb as most songs on 1039 are, at 16 (which they were when they wrote it and i was when i bought it) it's kinda talking a lot about your life. Like....hanging out at the library and checking out some girl (like at the library above)

I'd say likely. I think it's hard for any man past 30 to listen to dookie, nevermind the earlier stuff, and relate to it. I really don't think you should be able to anyway. Even I in my arrested development state can't do it.

The exploding boy

I think by hardcore fan I would mean people who hang out on official forums of any band..... Generally speaking those people are obsessive.

I know I'm way way over my hardcore fan of anything days. And I did do the hardcore fan thing pretty hardcorely in my teens.

Shallowed
05-30-2014, 08:34 PM
Yeah I mean for most artists (of which there are few) that I am a "hardcore fan" of, I have never met very many other hardcore fans that were teenagers. SP is the only band that I am still a "hardcore fan" of since I was a teenager, other artists have fallen out of my fandom spotlight, and then bands that I was a "casual fan" of in my teenage years I've since become a "hardcore fan" of. Or only discovered since turning 20.

And another thing is that you can only discover so much music in your teenage years, it's not like you can only discover all that there in your teenage years.

What a depressing musical world that would be.
