For those of us who will inevitably have their spirits crushed by falling production standards, and standards generally, of this epic tv event.

Arya is still my favourite. Also...I can't believe the king slayer still wants his sister...gross.

I love how George RR Martin looks like a character from his own books.

Yeah i dunno what Vix is on about... sure it was more or less just an hour of exposition but of course that's going to be how the season starts, as far as i'm concerned if you just put on an hour a week of Charles Dance spouting random dialogue in character as Tywin i'd watch the hell out of that.

best character so far this season is The Hound

"lots of people name their swords"

"Lots of cunts!"

also, they replaced Daario with Michael Huisman (from Treme). His character seems completely different.

working on the second book, tough sledding. there is way too much description of food. ffs

450 pages into a 900 page monolith and i can't even discern a general plot, it's just a lot of fucking about and lots of food and every now and again you get to catch up with jon snow who isn't doing anything, catelyn stark who isn't doing anything, bran is having board meetings etc etc and then it's tyrion and suddenly stuff is happening

i'm not sure if i'm going to finish or bother with the tv show. i do want to see the esteemable sean bean (why isn't it shon bon?) as ned stark doe

and of course mr. dinklidge

Forty sacks of onions, twenty seven wheels of cheese....

Trots, keep going. Book three is absolutely worth the pain of reading about high fantasy food.

oh and i really did love the ned stark tragedy of the first book, it was almost as if martin was me<k>ta-slaying archetypal fantasy fiction at the same time. ned symbolizes every single honorable knight of every dimestore fantasy book that was ever written

clash of kings doesn't seem to have the same narrative direction

it's like iron man 2 compared to iron man. you know it just sprawls all over the place with no real act structure and you're left going "what the fuck is supposed to be going on" sometime around hour #2, instead of being riveted to your chair about what happens next.

To be clear - the premiere was great... But I have an uneasy feeling of impending doom about what is to come - it's going to take years to finish and it's like any big project. Or maybe I was just irreparably burned by Lost.

I tried reading the first book when I couldn't wait for series 4, but I preferred the tv series. And I read a lot of negative criticism about the later books so I decided to just wait and watch. I'm kinda lazy like that.

One of the others turned crasters kid into another
Seems fairly obvious
They never showed it in the books but it's long been the theory
The others are supposed to be pretty though so that's a weird change

I'm more concerned with why they made The kingslayer rape his sister and then not acknowledge it in the next episode when it was a consensual scene in the books
The answer is that they didn't mean for it to be a rape scene but I'm not sure how disturbed you have to be to not realize that's what you filmed

scottytheoneand
04-28-2014, 01:04 PM
when I saw that last 30 seconds it made me wonder if they'll continue to ******* tidbits like that which aren't revealed in the books. My initial thought was that they felt they needed to ******* that type of a scene because the series hasn't done much to communicate the fact that the really big threat from north of the wall isn't the Wildlings.

I don't see what's so confusing about the rape? He forced himself on her. Look how she treats him in the last episode. She hates him.

The confusing part is he 100% does not rape her in the books. GRRM also stated he was not consulted about the change. Moreover it was completely unnecessary.

That's kind of a huge deviation from the book's character. He's actually a likable guy who turns his shit around in some pretty cool ways. You know, actual meaningful development that makes sense.

MusicMan4
04-28-2014, 01:12 PM
But also the director of the scene said it wasn't meant to be a rape scene which is a staggering lack of awareness on the part of everyone involved with the show except George himself who wasn't consulted about any changes to it
It's clear in this episode that they really didn't mean for it to be rape and they are keeping Jaime on the redemption path and yeah I don't understand the level of tone deafness. She was cold to him after the scene in the books too, but it was clearly enthusiastically consensual there

I just am stuck in a loop repeating myself that they didn't mean for it to be a rape scene
It's just astonishing
The director said it was consensual
like this stands as definitive proof that rape culture is a real thing that a major production like this can stage a scene where a woman keeps yelling no and beating a guy who throws her on the ground and fucks her in a church and nobody involved went "hey wait this isn't supposed to be a rape scene"

She does like saying no a lot each time they fuck in the book. But it could honestly be my blindness to rape that I saw her initial token resistance as just that. I think they embrace lovingly though and she usually says something about feeling whole when he's inside her. And their dynamic is tough to read because she's the one with any notion of ambition whatsoever, whereas he would be satisfied moving away with her and living like a hobo. She's the powerful one who mocks him and tells him what to do. ...Although privately he's always mentioning her cunt.

edit...

I'm assuming that the horned guy is the Night's King???

http://awoiaf.westeros.org/index.php/Night's_King

According to legend, the Night's King lived during the Age of Heroes, not long after the Wall was complete. He was a fearless warrior, who was named the thirteenth Lord Commander of the Night's Watch. Later he fell in love with a woman "with skin as white as the moon and eyes like blue stars", he chased her and loved her though "her skin was cold as ice", and when he gave his seed to her he gave his soul as well.[1] (Her description matches that of the Others.)

He brought her back to the Nightfort and after the unholy union, he declared himself king and her his queen, and ruled the Nightfort as his own castle for thirteen years. During the dark years of his reign, horrific atrocities were committed, of which tales are still told in the North. It was not until his own brother, the King in the North, and Joramun, the King-Beyond-the-Wall, joined forces that the Night's King was brought down and the Night's Watch freed. After his fall, when it was discovered that he had been sacrificing to the Others (possibly in similar way to Craster), all records of him were destroyed and his very name was forbidden.[1] It is likely this led the lords of the North to forbid the Night's Watch to construct walls at their keeps, ensuring the keeps would always be accessible from the south.

that would also make him a Stark

I hadn't read any director's comments. When I watched the episode I assumed that it was a rape scene. And reading media comments all of last week it seems like a lot of viewers did too.

I find it hard to believe that nobody involved with the series didn't bring that up before they finished editing that episode.

I don't really think an Other would be able to escape across The Wall. It's got spells woven into it, and is proven by the fact that not even Cold Hands can go under it.

When Sam leads Bran underneath, Sam has to say the words to open the gate because he's a man of The Watch. So although The Night's King could've opened the door, I don't know how she could pass through it if she were an Other. Remember, since The Night's King is a Watchman, that means Bran the Builder already made the wall and wove its spells.

I think the Others have some leader, presumably "The Other" that followers of R'hllor won't name, who threatens to bring darkness and the cold of night etc... But not The Night's King. The Night's King was just some high-level henchman who brought about the long winter.

I don't think the leader of the Others has been revealed. They might not even have a solitary leader, who knows.

His writing is pretty pedestrian I reckon - he reminds me of Stephen King and Asimov, you can feel that milady vibe seeping out of the text. i've learned that if i was to ever attend a live televised sporting event that the only way to do things is to not sit anywhere near the action (including likely spots for foul balls and home runs in baseball) and to just politely sit and stare ahead and lightly applaud while otherwise keeping your hands motionless on your lap
it's the only way to do it
unless a kiss cam or dance cam ends up on you, at which point the only remaining option is immediately biting down on a cyanide capsule

Also gotta wonder about the 'milady' references from trolly vix. What is milady about a book full of rape, whores andgraphic pre teen sex. Get your fucking terms straight if you want to troll hard with a vengeance.

Star wars is milady fic

I'm fat and on the internet because I became a mum and quit smoking and drinking. What's your excuse, neckbeard??

Miladies are into all kinds of gross shit because they're deluded enough to think that as long as they present the right way on the surface and treat a woman the right way to her face, what they do when her back is turned doesn't matter. Their over the top courtesy is obvious over compensation for their temporarily suppressed perversions... GoT is sexually disgusting and yet look at all of you miladies up in here all like OMG they turned a non- rape scene into a rape one! And then tried to say it wasn't rape! As if Charmbag is gonna be like oh man look at all these gentle loving guys who sat through pages of food description so they could bust their nuts over the whore raping and virgin deflowering...now that they've expressed that opinion I think I might date one of them

Taking human life should always be a very serious thing. There's something very close up about the Middle Ages. You're taking a sharp piece of steel and hacking at someone's head, and you're getting spattered with his blood, and you're hearing his screams. In some ways maybe it's more brutal that we've insulated ourselves from that. We're setting up mechanisms where we can kill human beings with drones and missiles where you're sitting at a console and pressing the button. We never have to hear their whimpering, or hear them begging for their mother, or dying in horrible realities around us. I don't know if that's necessarily such a good thing. You see this same moral struggle all through history. It's always the question, when you're at war, do you do whatever it takes to win, or do you actually maintain your own moral standard and ideals? Should we be waterboarding people? What if we get valuable information that saves our lives? Well, even so, aren't we compromising ourselves? But if it prevents another 9/11, is torture worth it? I don't know, but it's a question worth asking. Do you commit horrible crimes to stay alive so your side should win?

Ruling is hard. This was maybe my answer to Tolkien, whom, as much as I admire him, I do quibble with. Lord of the Rings had a very medieval philosophy: that if the king was a good man, the land would prosper. We look at real history and it's not that simple. Tolkien can say that Aragorn became king and reigned for a hundred years, and he was wise and good. But Tolkien doesn't ask the question: What was Aragorn's tax policy? Did he maintain a standing army? What did he do in times of flood and famine? And what about all these orcs? By the end of the war, Sauron is gone but all of the orcs aren't gone – they're in the mountains. Did Aragorn pursue a policy of systematic genocide and kill them? Even the little baby orcs, in their little orc cradles?

Jaqen H'ghar gave her the coin in a previous season. He was the guy who could change his appearance. The assasin that was posing as a soldier when she was at Casterly Rock pretending to be a boy and waiting on Tywin Lannister. I still refuse to believe Jon is the Rhaegar/Lyanna Lord of Light offspring of Stark ice and Targaryen fire. Something about it just doesn't feel right, but I can't put my finger on it.

That'd be cool if he were the son of Ashara Dayne somehow... Even though time-wise it'd be unlikely. Unless he's like Brandon Stark and Ashara Dayne's son.

I think what's going to happen is Bran ends up taking control over a dragon, along with Howland Reed, and they defeat a Mellisandre-controlled Drogo.

I did read a dance with dragons and it was almost exclusively terrible outside of I think the Theon and Victarion chapters but what are you gonna do
When the HBO series veers from the source material it's been 90% the worst fanfic nonsense imaginable. The Theon torture in season 3 was nearly impossible to sit through and they dumped on that story even more with the "Yara" stuff this season
Anyone else finishes the story it's going to be even worse
I'm not a an unquestioning fan here
I'm just choosing to hope that the stories will get better and he knows what he's doing as he gets closer to the end because hopefully the only reason the last two books were bad was because he wrote the entire first 3 planning on picking the story back up four years later and couldn't make that work

Of course as far as I can tell the only reason a several year gap couldn't work was because when we left off the Others were basically about to march south on the wall and it would have been incredibly stupid to just say "yeah they decided to just chill out for a while"
Then for two books they are basically not mentioned while Jon mopes around and Sam gets on a boat and fucks
The point of the series is how meaningless all the political scheming will be when this threat comes and then two thousand plus pages of some of the most boring political "intrigue" since Star Wars prequel trade routes
I might only be invested in Arya at this point
Tyrions chapters in DWD were terrible, I doubt the Theon stuff is as well written next time, whatever happens with Jamie/Brienne/Catelyn is going to be fucking stupid, Dark Sansa is gonna kill Littlefinger and I love Littlefinger, I can't believe he still has to write a bunch of shit about Davos hunting for Rickon and Osha, I don't want to read another word about the fucking Martells or Aeron Greyjoy
Just good lord
Oy vey

The climactic scene of a 1,500 page novel, the fifth of a series, was possibly the story's most important character wandering around the desert with diarrhea and bumping into her old murdering horde of brown people

I believe that he can't figure out how to get to the end of it all, so he's filling pages with mindless prose. After all, several thousands of pages of pointless exposition isn't exactly necessary if in the end he's going to wrap it up with a glorious reveal.

I also get the impression that because of his sales volume his publisher and editor apply zero pressure when it comes to curbing his verbosity.

Hopefully he just kills off the Martells and Greyjoys and Griff/Joncon within 350 pages of Winds

Anyone who hasn't read the last two books, none of this is a spoiler because nothing happened in these books except Dany flew around on a dragon to go take a shit
That's literally literal

if martin does die early there will be decades worth of endless fan arguments about how amazing the ending off the series would have been.

it will become the biggest nerd circle jerk of all time

if you want jon's parentage confirmed there are a bunch of interviews where the show runners say they met with martin and he asked them point blank "who are jon snow's parents" to gauge how serious they were about the show and their answer satisfied them

if the answer was so important and it turns out to be "random whore king robert mentioned" or ashara dayne i will stab myself

and then be reborn in the light of r'hollr

Ashara Dayne's son wouldn't be so bad imo.

1. Her brother was the greatest swordsman of his day
2. Eddard loved her before he was forcibly betrothed to Catelyn
3. Purple eyes
4. Barristan Selmy thought she was beautiful
5. Ned killed her brother, who would be Jon's uncle, and thus there's a cool Howland Reed tie-in

I don't think it'll be her, but that's probably my favorite possible baby momma. Although I wish I had more info on the fishwife story.

The problem with Ashara is it doesn't fit the timeline at all... Ned had no time to impregnate her. His last contact with her was the Tourney at Harrenhal, wasn't it? It's a little too much time, although it gives Ned time to have slept with her prior to being Catelyn's plan-B.

Part of me suspects it's something horrible like Brandon and Lyanna may be the parents... Lady Dustin had some pretty terrible things to say about Brandon.

Arthur Dayne is supposedly actually only great because of his sword anyway
If you take away the Dayne's sword I put a lot of people over him
Selmy and the Kingslayer would mop him up

I might be misremembering it
Only the best Dayne's get to use the sword but I'm fairly sure the sword is supposed to have some kind of power

If the mother was Ashara he didn't need to hide her identity
If purple eyes were the problem then House Dayne would have been completely wiped out by Robert
It's the combo with silver hair that makes a Targ
Jon has to be a Targaryen for it all to make sense

If it does have some power, that's awesome.

Those are definitely the top 3 swordsmen imo. I think I'd put Dayne above Selmy and Lannister only because everybody agrees that the Kingsguard back in those days was comprised of the best fighters in the land, so he got offered the white because he's got to be pretty good. Rhaegar might've been pretty good, but Robert in his prime was unbeatable with that hammer so that's a tough comparison.

He could've been hiding it for the sake of Ashara's honor, kind of like how Robb marries Jeyne Westerling to protect her honor.

When Jamie's golden hand turns into a real hand and he kills Ser Robert Strong in an epic fight that also features the return of Sandor Clegane (he's still alive, only "The Hound" is dead) I'm gonna bump him up to number one

I figure killing frankengregor is even harder than the red viper's job of killing the real one

I don't think he's a good swordsman, but he's easily the best all arounder. I think the best under him might be turn out to be Hodor warged by Bran.

Also I'm betting Sandor died. It's the perfect end to him. Sad and miserable, like his life. All he ever wanted was to kill Gregor, and Gregor died.

It's possible he became a monk now, but with GRRM you know he probs dead.

Strong, blatant, lasting, clear.

I just want to know who the Stark warg is who started it all since it runs in the family. And was Ned a warg? Did he warg into another body right before dying, thereby avoiding death? omggggg

scottytheoneand

No warg for Ned

I'm still pissed that they wrote Lady Stoneheart out of the TV series. Biggest miss so far for sure
