Smashing Pumpkins leader to interpret Herman Hesse novel on February 28 at his Chicago tea shop

"He saw that the water continually flowed and flowed and yet it was always there; it was always the same and yet every moment it was new." That's Hermann Hesse in his essential/existential 1922 coming-of-age novel Siddhartha. We'd have to double-check with Heraclitus, but it could also be an apt preview of Billy Corgan's upcoming free ambient set inspired by Siddhartha. The Smashing Pumpkins leader said on Facebook he'll be building an eight-hour (or more) live show around a synth interpretation of Hesse's book on February 28 at his Madame ZuZu's Tea House in Chicago suburb Highland Park, Illinois.

More precisely, Corgan said this: "On 2//28 I'll be doing a show at Madame ZuZu's Teahouse; start time noon, and due to nature of performance it'll last 8-9 hours. So see http://MadameZuzus.com/ in coming days for details on seating and admissions. As with all our events there is no charge. Performance will be centered around an ambient/musical interpretation of Hermann Hesse's Siddhartha; built by modular synthesis, on the fly. Readings of the text to go hand in hand with whatever is created; + the first @Hexistential poster, and event t-shirts too. Hope to see you there."

Didn't know Corgan was on Facebook? He rejoined in January. As SP fan blog Hipsters United documents, the wrestling superfan deleted his Facebook account a few years ago after fans criticized him on the platform. On the revived page earlier this month, Corgan posted a photo of himself (above) with the caption, "Writing new SP songs." Smashing Pumpkins' last album, Oceania, came out in 2012, and Corgan has been working on a new album for some time.

But don't take our word for it. More Siddhartha: "I can love a stone, Govinda, and a tree or a piece of bark. These are things and one can love things. But one cannot love words. Therefore teachings are of no use to me, they have no hardness, no softness, no colors, no corners, no smell, no taste — they have nothing but words." Okay, this calls for the intro from "Cherub Rock."

I have no idea what that means either. I guess it is like a musical without words, and there will be some readings maybe.

Don't worry crestfallen will be there. Also, monte bought the book on amazon for 99 cents, apparently.

I've read the book at two different times in my life and I'd probably get a lot more out of it if I read it again. I really can't envision what a 8-9 hour musical interpretation of it would look like, but I would be intrigued to find out as I tend to appreciate Billy's musical talent.
I visited the midwest last fall and made the pilgrimage to Madame Zuzu's. There's no way I could be comfortable sitting in that place all day long. And the place can't really fit very many people, so how's this gonna work?

Not the way it happened.

Billy was on Facebook on Christmas eve talking to fans, one mentioned that Christmastime flash video. Billy freaked the fuck out and said something like "You mean the one they post on Netphoria and make fun of me." He then ranted about how it was Christmas and how could anyone do that to him when it was Christmas and he was thinking of his dead mother. He then then deleted the account.

No one made any remarks about his mother. They just mentioned the video and he freaked out and mentioned his mother.

And here it is:

FROM Tony Brunello: Why dont u use all this time on your hands to do something like....I don't know....write your first good song in the last 12 yrs?
BC: merry CHRISTMAS to me
FROM Tommes Tommsen: heīs right ;-D
FROM David Jimenez Leiva: He is so freaking right!
FROM Robin Zamora: Yeah, stop worrying about stupid riffs and focus on chord progression and vocal melodies.
BC: so, like, you mean, stop doing heavy riff songs like this Robin Zamora? And lose all the angsty singing, right? so no more songs like this, right? (posts Spangled)

FROM runo Macedo: hahahaha c'mom, it's funny, kinda rude, but funny.
BC: yes, i love to be told i suck on Christmas. always gets a good laugh out of me

FROM Vin Paul: Someone needs to find the christmas time smashing pumpkins video that was fan made from netphoria thats the best video of all time
BC: you mean the one where they call me Bolly and make fun of me? that was great!

FROM Edwin Mascorn: But critizism is healthy :-) aslong as they aint just being cunts lmao
BC: especially on Christmas! criticism helps me remember the good times with my deceased mother...

FROM Dave Williams: Billy - Any chance of the band doing a quick studio take of "Chrysanthemum" and dropping it on the internet? It's a lot to ask, but it was a great song that never made it to the Zwan show I was at.
BC: sure, coming right up...i'm sure new SP won't mind covering Zwan songs!!

FROM Carrie Thomas: What would happen if you did take music advice from a fan? Would it end up being glitter and fools gold?
BC: everyone would love me again!

ok, got to go back to Christmas now....it's been swell folks. lots of love, over and out, BC

It is supposed to be at noon, some will miss two meals and if people keep drinking tea and eating vegan baked goods there will be a lot of pee breaks and explosive diarrhea.

I wonder how long of an intermission there will be or if there is one, maybe Billy will have someone spoon feed him while he plays.

This is great. I could not think of a better follow up to the Walter E. Smith commercial than this. There are just so many wonderful aspects of this whole thing, the best of which is the idea of Monte attempting to read Siddhartha and possibly spontaneously combusting.

Also, in regards to Billy's Facebook temper tantrum back in 2010, it was proof that he pretty much acts exactly the way he was depicted in that Christmastime video.

that's such a load of bullshit though, those chicago songs. as if anyone thought they weren't worth releasing. i really wonder where he read those comments. also, what does it even matter? i thought he was an "artist" with "integrity" and whatnot. surely such a person releases whatever they want to release, no matter what some twat on the internet thinks about it
i always thought he hadn't released it because he was disappointed with the results of his experiment (record a couple of days in a church, then do one show at the metro, no time to fool around). if he's actually happy with the results, then not releasing it doesn't make any sense.
it's like you say, starla, by the time he decides to release this, nobody will be interested anymore. just like a lot of the archive/vaults stuff: they should have started releasing stuff years ago. if they ever start this up again, it'll fall flat on its ass, as only a handful of people are interested still.

Actually find it funny (and kind of sad on their part) that Pitchfork actually seems to be taking this more seriously than any of Billy's output since 1998.

i haven't been to that site in years but i went to see what you were saying and is

The show will start at noon on February 28, and early reports predict that it will be the most Billy Corgan thing ever to happen.

that what you consider "taking seriously" and how about from back when the wrestling thing was news:

I don't understand why all the comments on this are so negative. They are rebranding Zuzu's, from teahouse to teashop and art studio. Instead of the usual Zuzu's program - a reading or music - it's both, background sound to Hesse while you buy and drink some tea. Every other multi media art student does it, why not Corgan's teahouse?
Or is the weird thing that people with a cultural horizon like Monte buy a plane ticket and expect to sit on their ass for 8 hours?

Either way, if you do something like that, Siddhartha is a really good choice imo.

I find it kind of ironic that Billy is doing this. It just screams 'hipster' to me, along with that t-shirt line he started. I think it's still strange for some people to believe that Billy cares more about tea and wrestling than SP. Yeah, he says he's working on new material, but you know his priorities have changed when the SP twitter feed is full of tea or wrestling news. It's not like there isn't any SP news to share. We know Adore is done mastering, but they didn't bother to tell the fans anything this time around. At this point I'd love to hear anything at all about the Adore reissue.

But there's only "less than 5 in world!" That apparently makes it worth $30. I'm willing to bet money that Billy and co just flipped through some antique material, found some pictures he liked, and ironed them onto some shirts. He should really hire a real/talented artist every now and then.

Great skill and craftsmanship deserves to be paid. It's one area I think that businesses should splurge on, especially in this case when it comes to branding. It makes a huge fucking difference.

But Billy is self-admittedly cheap and lately tends to favor hiring friends/gfs over skilled artists. But people will still buy the stuff solely because Billy's promoting it. That's one thing he's not shy of taking advantage of. I'm kind of amazed that people even buy the antiques that Billy sells at his shop. It's like they don't realize that Billy just buys these things from local antique shows and malls and then resells them at exorbitant prices. I guess the montesque fans just cream at the thought of owning something that Billy has touched.

Totally just found some copyright-free vintage clip art and ironed them onto some t-shirts. So much for "art", eh?

You'd think someone that started a band in their 20s with little money would have the inclination to pay some talented young artists to do their design work, given that they can now afford to and would want to support these artists.

I guess that is assuming said individual didn't get old, lose touch with their past self, and become just as miserly as the old fogies they used to swear they would never be like.

Exactly! It is infuriating that he doesn't support local arts!

Also, I care because it is my career to care about design and DIY is something I am very interested in.

James did DIY stuff for his album it turned out really cool.

This honestly reeks of a profit based business decision and not an art project. He wants publicity and he wants to gauge fans of SP.

Also, yelena's aesthetic was from 33 on. You don't think 33 was an amazing video? Also, adore era she even dressed Billy.

I the the early artwork worked for those albums, but Yelena's photography on the other albums were outstanding. There is nothing intimate about the early albums, it is just post modern stuff and went with early 90s culture/subculture at the time.

I also don't agree Billy was isolated more when yelena came along.

You can tell by the clothing he wore in the adore era that he was being dressed. Yelena seemingly styled him because the clothes he wore are similar to her aesthetic, even today.

I don't have proof but what on this board is complete truth and not mainly based on assumptions?

Moreover, it isn't shocking or THICK to infer that someone who URGED someone to purchase leather pants did URGE him to buy other clothes. Especially considering they often matched

You think Tom Brady dresses himself? no.

i just thought maybe her high art and fashion sense was rubbing off on him. he also acted like a complete gentleman during the adore tour but she certainly wasn't speaking for him. i always suspected it was more of her overall influence than actually she went shopping for him and picked out clothes and outfits for him to wear.

can we stay on point?

8-9 hours of synth.
any ideas what patches he'll be using?
how many oscillators is he working with? any external sources? is that doepfer compatible with other eurorack modules?

here's info I found relating to TFE sessions:
well i worked on this record, so ask me anything... It was quite the process!
Billy has a tremendous amount of vintage analog synths, drum machines, fx, etc that we were using. And the house rules were pretty strict. We could use anything in the room, were not allowed to use samples (from outside sources, we could resample what we had), because he had a real demand for authenticity.
A bulk of the sounds on the record were made with a custom huge Doepfer modular, which Bon Harris put together, and programmed like noone else you have ever seen. I think he is the eddie van halen of programmers, esp. on modular stuff, and i cannot give him enough credit for his taste, production, and patience in teaching matt walker and myself how to program on those beasts.
We had four different setups, bon with most of the modulars in one corner, and matt walker and myself with use of everything from the whole roland jupiter line, to all the crumars, solina's, oberheims, moogs, etc you can imagine. No digital hardware synths were used at all.
Billy was setup in the control room (we were in the live room, since we weren't using "real" drums, and only a portion of the live room was set up for billy's vocal and guitar rig.
It was fortunate for matt walker at the time that ALL the drums were programmed, as he had just torn his acl in an onstage accident, and was in a total leg brace for most of the recording sessions. We used every drum machine made up until about 1985, and the bass sounds mainly came from the doepfer, roland system 100, some came from minimoogs or oberheim xpanders, etc... most of which were then amped and recorded in a room through a variety of amps, if memory serves, the ampeg got the majority of the work.
bjorn thorsrud did a great job meticuously recording this project, as with so many different contributions from different workstations, all being thrown in the pot, it could get to be quite a nightmare, but he held it all together. Most of the synths if i remember, were either amped and recorded back into our DAWS, usually through millenial, neve, or the ssl.

the guitar sounds were painstakingly worked on. Billy is the best guitar player i have ever worked with, and his attention to detail and sound sculpting abilities were labored over with love, as every song has only ONE take of guitar, with one sound, and one pass only. If he made a mistake, rewind, start over from the beginning. It made for some late nights.
I am not sure if he wants me to divulge his signal path right now, but to give clue, it was pretty much made out of one device, and on occassion we threw one of his huge huge collection of vintage pedals. He, Bjorn and I would sometimes spend a whole day making one guitar sound, tweaking until our ears bled, but it was a fun adventure.

there is so much of the process on this record that i can talk about, but whatever, ask me anything, and i will answer as best as memory serves!

I don't know why Billy works for hours and hours and hours with no breaks. No good comes of that. He can be really dumb about things he should be really smart about. Like clearing his brain during the creative process. You get shit done faster.

Also, he shouldn't force others to work the way he wants. Like james and d'arcy not given breaks and shit.

Smashing Pumpkins frontman Billy Corgan will perform at his Madame ZuZu's Teashop and Art Studio in Highland Park on Friday for as long as nine hours.

Corgan is expected to perform a musical interpretation of Hermann Hesse's novel "Siddhartha," according to the Madame ZuZu's website, a show that's expected to last eight to nine hours.

"(The) show will be centered around an ambient/musical interpretation of Hermann Hesse's Siddhartha; built by modular synthesis, on the fly," the website said.

Chloe Mendel, manager at Madame ZuZu's in the Ravinia neighborhood of Highland Park, said they've received calls and emails from people flying in from around the country for Corgan's improvisational art installation.

The tea house seats 38 people, Mendel said, and no reservations are being taken. As such, customers will be rotated as needed to accommodate the greatest number of people.

Corgan will perform on synthesizers, which he collects, Mendel said. In addition to the performance, limited edition posters and T-shirts will be sold.

And while the show is free, customers are asked to drink tea as a courtesy, she said. A special tea called "freak of nature oolong" will be served.

"This is basically an example of how we use Madame ZuZu's as a creative space," Mendel said. "We're all really excited."

The show starts at noon.

I seriously considered it, as I have family that lives in Chicago proper and a train ride to Highland Park is only @ 45 minutes away.

My main interest is how the whole spectacle will be managed. With so many people supposedly flying in and attending and the rotated seating going on and the fact that this isn't going to be a performance but merely a day's worth of ambient/background music while I know so many people don't realize this I'm expecting a trainwreck of sorts.

I can't wait to read the online reviews of this experience.
