i'm assuming that the ones marked "drone" are just piano demos of the chord changes

also did billy play some of these songs (blank page and crestfallen) on mancow's show?

where was the studio version of i want you to want me released earlier? i can't remember.

oh wait it was the SP radio streams from 2000 - glass towers, punch drunk and dizzy, collapsing cities. might not have been studio (going from memory) but it sounded really really clean.

also the Mancow tracks are almost certainly from 9/18/98 at Q101 studios

I hope we get all of the b-sides from Adore's singles, too, like Puff Daddy's Perfect, Summer, etc. I know we already have them, but it'd be nice to have a complete box set of everything Adore.

And btw, 5 versions of Crestfallen would actually be pretty awesome, just so long as it doesn't take away from or replace other unreleased material.

Reyngel
09-19-2013, 05:43 AM
I'm also really hoping we get instrumentals for ALL of Adore's tracks. It's such a beautiful album, and being able to appreciate all of the work that went into the pianos and synths and strings and ethereal arrangements would really showcase the album.

Reyngel
09-19-2013, 05:52 AM
It would also be really cool if Billy finally let the cat out of the bag regarding the inside-joke behind "17." I think he once alluded to him wanting the album to end with 17 tracks, but Virgin of America told him no because they felt it would be too long. So he recorded 17 seconds using the melody of Blissed + Gone and just tacked it on...? I think the album was originally supposed to end with Once in a While, like the "Part 2" of Blank Page. Which is why the Japanese version has it set up that way.

True - but I really wonder how many discs they're aiming for with this one. I just assumed it would be a two CD/one DVD job like Gish and Siamese were. And if that's the case, then please oh please make me pull out my singles for Czarina, Summer and OIAW and give me three other songs instead.

Overall, I'd have to say that's been one of my biggest beefs with these reissues: loading them full of stuff that the hardcore collector already has when there's other stuff out there that they COULD put on there - when really, I would assume that 80% of the people buying these reissues are hardcore fans who already have the singles from that era.

Cool As Ice Cream
09-19-2013, 09:36 AM

The full color treatment on TAFH was a bit much, can't see how that would look good for Adore.
The color scheme they had for Daphne Descends could look good, if they use Yelena's work a at all.

Billy contacted me personally a couple of weeks ago to let me know about these reissues, and asked my personal opinion about some of them. I spent some time putting together a power point presentation on what I thought he should do and uploaded it to him around 2 am. Approximately 10:05 am, he called again and thanked me and said that he appreciated all of my effort and that he was taking my ideas seriously.

i remember reading at the beginning of the reissue project, that contracts were signed, and that everything up to rotten apples had to be released before the end of 2013.
when i said i didn't believe that would ever happen, someone assured me that there was no way out of it, not for belly and not for emi.
clearly that wasn't true.

Reyngel
09-20-2013, 03:52 AM
The Adore project may be delayed, but, I don't think there's much doubt it will be finished. He doesn't tend to post things like that note sheet or Tweet about a project unless it's coming to fruition. Obviously, based on a lot of my posts, there aren't many people on Netphoria who are more cynical than me about his ability to follow through with release schedules. But for the Adore reissue, I'm actually okay with him taking all the time he needs.

I've said all along that the Adore reissue has the greatest potential to be something special. It was his first true dabble with electronic approaches, and the technology of 2013 is almost incomparable to the shit that existed back in 1997. A true remixing and remastering of Adore, along with a multitude of unheard glimpses into arguably the darkest, most heart-felt era of his song writing, is something I can't wait to get my hands on. If it takes until January for him to jam-pack the boxset full of demos, instrumentals and finished alternate versions, that's fine by me. I just hope we get a little more, then, than we have been. I know I'd gladly pay a higher price for more material.

Reyngel

And speaking of instrumentals, since the album plays more like an opera, I think it could be incredible to inc|ude a disc of strictly instrumentals from the original album. All 16 tracks, no vocals, just the background tracks. It'd be like some sort of movie score.

An even better idea would be to release the sound stems via Creative Commons, along the lines that Reznor did for Year Zero. From just the short Adore documentary that's out there, there appears to be layer upon layer of texture there. It'd be fun to sort of hear things for the first time again.

I used "there" three times in one sentence.

""He pretty much liked everything I did and he seemed very happy most of the time," says Harris. "But there were so many slave reels for each of these songs, so many guitar and drum parts, it was inevitable that the mix process was going to involve a lot of weeding through the things. We both knew that, great as some of the ideas were, they might not make it into the final mix just because there were so many other good parts vying for position. Some of the songs are very acoustic and stripped back, and didn't really warrant my input at all."

During the recording sessions, this combination of quite heavily electronic and almost entirely acoustic songs seemed a little bit at odds for one album's worth of material, but, as Harris explains, with Corgan at the production helm and Harris' old associate Flood coming in at the mixing stage it worked out very smoothly.

"It's quite a testament to the mix job that nothing really jumps out at you as being super-different, which was some of the craft of Billy and Flood getting together for the mixes. You're aware of there being a different approach, but no one thing or the other is highlighted. It's very much a subtle integration all round, and it's really forged its own sound, it's not like 'Here we go, this is electronica!'"

I really want to hear the remixes that he had people do. If I remember correctly, I think he mentioned there was an Al Jourgensen remix of something and some other high-profile people.

It'd be cool to hear rock demos of songs before he went in the direction he did on the album.

Also, I don't think there's anyway we are going to get blown away by LMGTWTY. It's probably pretty good but it can't possibly live up to 16 years of speculation/hype.

The choice between mono/stereo is kind of an aesthetic choice. When given the choice though, 99% of the time it will be a recording from the 50's or 60's, which is when both formats were available. Stereo recording was still in its infancy, so stereo effects, especially panning were used in exaggerated ways to make the difference really obvious. Typically you'd have instruments coming through one channel and vocals coming out the other, or bass and drums on one side and everything else on the other. It's far more suited for listening on speakers than on headphones because of the extreme isolation.

Given the option I prefer mono, because in most cases that's where more time, effort and attention have been given to, and it just sounds more cohesive overall.

Mono can give a different perspective on tracks, but overall it really is inferior IMO in terms of delivering the most balanced, well-crafted sound. The instruments are much harder to distinguish from one another and there is much less separation and space in the mix. On modern recordings, mono just sounds like a novelty to me. I don't personally think there are any inherent benefits to using it versus the alternative. It's practically one step away from inserting fake radio static or vinyl pops and hisses in a song

I would say that engineers back then just simply didn't know better, and that a standard had to evolve over time, in which lower frequencies tended to get panned to the center (because we perceive them centralized anyways). By the early 70s, they had figured it out: kick and snare and vocals in the center; instruments at at 9 and 3, etc. You get the idea.

Also remember that often that's simply how the album was recorded, with a number of instruments bounced onto one track, because they knew the end result would be in mono anyways, and that stereo was simply a novelty. So there was no choice but to have all the bass and drums panned to the left or whathaveyou. In the case of Pet Sounds, the stereo mix had to actually be digitally created by syncing up the vocal multitrack tapes to the instrumental multitrack tapes in ProTools, because Brian Wilson originally bounced the entire instrumental tracks down to one monophonic track!

I was listening to Odyssey and Oracle the other day, and the panning was quite annoying; but I know they recorded it at EMI, and probably was recorded to 4-track. What we here is the only possible stereophonic configuration, more or less.

So anyways, I never liked the mono Adore. The reason Corgan did it was for a more authentic classic vibe, right? ...For this album that was completely modern and futuristic by design? Dumb. Plus, the sonic design of the album lent itself to interesting stereo separation anyways. If anything, Gish should have been the mono-ready album.

Oh well whatever.

I listened to some of the Beatles stereo remasters and they were interesting, but the originals are in mono and I would rather hear it the way it was originally intended. However, anything recorded after the development of stereo, I just don't understand why you would want to hear that in a format that makes it harder to hear the individual instruments and makes the sound less dynamic and complex

Only when there's multiple different remasters. The number of different super deluxe remastered anniversary editions of Velvet Underground & Nico and Pet Sounds is ridiculous.

I think this is why it's best to stick to the original pressings. Sure it may sound "better" but it's still removed (different) from the original.

Eh it kinda depends on the album, idk. I like the stereo pet Sounds much better, you can appreciate all the layers of the album much better. Same with all the later Beatles albums. But all those early ones should probably be in mono.

I'm too much of a purist. I want to hear exactly what everyone else was hearing the day the record came out. Honestly I know that the upmost care goes into beatles and beach boys remasters but the statute of limitations (if there was one) ran out a long time ago and the main people interested are the ones that have the originals memorized. Nothing wrong with that.

Again, sure it may sound better and certainly different than the originals but if I'm chasing history I want the direct historic sound. I've mentioned it before some some early wax sounds amazing because it wasn't recorded or mixed or mastered very well and I wouldn't trade that for anything.

Howie said it best - it's a way to sell the same record twice or in some cases dozens of times.

However, anything recorded after the development of stereo, I just don't understand why you would want to hear that in a format that makes it harder to hear the individual instruments and makes the sound less dynamic and complex

I think, in the case of Adore, the sound is actually more dynamic (pushing air) and I can hear competely new things I can't hear in the stereo version. Other subtle sounds are sacrificed on the other hand. It's worth pointing out that it's not simply a mono version but an entirely different mix, which echoes my post above. It's practically a different album of the same material and interesting if you have the original memorized.

I'll have to track down a mono mix. The stereo mix is very distracting!

The 40th anniversary edition of Odessey And Oracle has both the mono and stereo mixes.

Is Lucky 13 from the greatest hits cd an indication of how clean the rest of the M2 FRIENDS AND ENEMIES OF MODERN MUSIC tracks will sound? Or will william actually make it sound like M1 and mix up the tracklists and make it all sound uniform?

What's happened between 2012 and now that's slowed down progress on the reissues so much? In 2012, the PI and MCIS reissues were released, as well as Oceania. Last year we got the TAFH reissue, and while it has a lot of material in its own right, it's still less than what came out the previous year. It's like the momentum f this project is slipping.

Yeah the pace of this project slowing is a bit alarming for those who are looking ahead to Machina and Zwan. Still want to hear Adore though.

Does anyone who knows anything about such things think that they (SP, primarily BC i guess and the label) are actually making any money off the reissues? I can see it with SD and MCIS, but with the less commercially successful albums it seems doubtful. If this starts to lose the label money the whole thing could just stop, especially if the head-honchos are different now to those that commissioned the reissues in the first place.

The version of Adore Demos that I have has Once in a While as well as Annie Dog and My Mistake removed.

Anyone got the whole thing?
