it used to be a tradition when a new album rolled out i'd listen to the whole thing right away. but i'm older and pumpkins aren't a big part of my life like they used to be. so when oceania leaked i shuffled through a few songs, listened to a few that i liked during workouts or whatever and never really went back to it.

so i went on a roadtrip and decided it was time to put the cd in and listen to it from start to finish. i was surprised how good it was. it didn't BURN THE LIES OFF MY SOUL and didn't redeem alot of billiam's bullshit the past five years (or not entirely) but it took the siamese dream - adore era sound and contemporized it in a way that wasn't a rote rehash. even when the album's lesser second half where it goes all punk pop, songs like chimera were pretty good. i'll probably get sent to the shed for this but i didn't have any problems with the drumming.

it think the only song i didn't like was glissandra. violet rays kind of drones on, seems overly dramatic and doesn't go anywhere, but alot of people seemed to like it so i dunno. oceania and PALE HARSE did some cool things new to "the band", probably more than the entirety of zietgeist. but ultimately i agree with the pitchfork review that not a whole lot of new terrain was to be found here

8.0/10, would buy from them again

some of the songs have potential and some moments of brilliance peeking through (like all bill's work, even zeitgeist), but ultimately not that rewarding because it does nothing exciting. lyrics are very bad in general.

still, it's such an improvement over the other teargarden material, it's pretty striking comparatively.

Don't dislike the album, just don't find myself going back to it too often. Oceania (song) was murdered in the studio, pity. Still like Panopticon and One Diamond every now and then.

The bad news is Oceania has no staying power. While you may think it's pretty good now, a year from now it will be 'meh'. Oceania is not good for repeat listening.

redbreegull

I agree with everyone who said it has no staying power. I was pretty pumped about it first listen, but it fades quickly. I kind of dig Glissandra though... the emphasis on shoegaze thing is really the only part of Oceania's sound that sets it apart from all other SP records. It's like Siamese Dream w/o the Sabbath. Chimera is the worst one by far, it's fucking horrible. Even there though, the guitar solo fucking kills. So frustrating to hear little moments of greatness drowning in shit

Hated this album on first listen. I've tried to like it, and I guess the hate has turned to dislike. Still, the only songs I ever find myself wanting to hear are Pinwheels and Oceania. Sometimes I lazily let the rest of the album play after those 2 and it isn't horrible I guess, but nothing I would go out of my way to listen to.

Zeitgeist & friends are great, though.

it's more than 6.

the album is pretty good, just well short of any original SP release. I find it does stand up well to repeated plays. I really disliked the last 4 songs initially but they've grown on me. would jimmy have pushed some of these songs further? maybe so, although of course he did play on the 2 TbK EPs so possibly not. the lyrics are pretty weak in places. actually, I think the band did about as well as could be expected with the songs - the opposite to Zeitgeist, where virtually every one was messed up to some degree.

think you're mixing up actual objectivity with your subjective opinion. if you look hard enough you can find some people who rate one album above another, even against a general consensus view. your opinion is right for you, but you cannot expect others to share it. it is highly unlikely you would find many SP fans who share your opinion, even with Machina.

James and D'arcy weren't on Oceania too and imo it was a lot better than Zeitgeist. the songs written for Zeitgeist weren't necessarily bad, it was the way they went about putting them together for the CD. effectively, Billy and the producers sabotaged the album. there's so many things i dislike about it (like i said, every song has something that jars or irritates) that i don't even think a remix would fix it.
