This is pretty tepid. It's like the most unremarkable parts of Placebo and Stone Temple Pilots. But hey any new blood around here is better than nothin so dont let me discourage you from posting there lil buddy.

didn't they have an EP or something? And yeah tepid is pretty accurate although I do listen to finelines on occasion

Heard of this band but haven't listened to much.

I found myself cringing at the lame pop punkish riff at the start but the song grew on me by the end. There's some elements in there that I can sense were perhaps inspired by shoegaze.

Saw them at the Koko in May on their (yet another) return. Thet've returned a bit like the Pumpkins in a way with a new guitarist and a new female bass player (who happens to be Ringo Starr's grandaughter).

To be honest they sounded just as good as they did 10 years ago and the setlist for a band which has only released one album so far was pretty damn good!

London City Lights
War of the Worlds
The Gentle Art of Choking
Grounded
Moodswings
It's So Damn Easy
Falling Off the Floor
Under the Wheels
Cast Aspersions
Windows & Walls
Get Lucky (Daft Punk cover)
Kohlstream
Cemented Shoes
Spirit Still Remains
Infantile
In the Air Tonight (Phil Collins cover) (snippet)
Ode to the Red Queen
(piano version)
Vapour Trails
Taprobane
Losing Touch
The Agonies and the Ecstacies

Encore:

Wicked Game (Chris Isaak cover)
This Time ("acoustic" on setlist, but wasn't)
Alpha Waves
Always: Your Way
Tongue Tied
C.O.R. (Critic Orientated Rock)

Oh cool, I was there too. Didn't think I'd meet any local MV fans on netphoria. Are you going to their Halloween show?

Haven't got my tickets yet (still awaiting confirmation from others to see how many) but yes, I'll be there. Never been to Heaven under the arches, had tickets for two gigs previous which I couldn't get to.

Yeah. Your feelings on it?

Sonic Johnny

I didn't like it at first but it grew on me. Took me a while to realise that its more about hooks and songs than riffs and big-arms moments. I described it to a friend as "Josh writing Beatles songs" and I mean that in a good way. Dunno if I'd call it a "great" album in terms of like will people be talking about it 20 years from now but it was particularly solid.

New QOTSA is good but then they've always been consistent.

My Vitriol would have been one of the biggest bands of the 2000s if they had followed up their debut album sooner. They basically fused Foo Fighters-esque punk rock with ethereal shoe gaze, but with superior dynamics and guitar interplay. It's simply some of the most otherworldly, beautiful rock music ever made.

At first I was going to say Black Rebel Motorcycle Club - Baby 81 but I think Like Clockwork is just as strong and also it's going to reach a wider audience and so it's going to leave more of a lasting impression.

Black Rebel Motorcycle Club - Baby 81

Totally agree. I don't think I've ever heard a band so effortlessly cool as BRMC. Great, borderline genius guitarists / songwriters.

Catherine Wheel

Finally someone here who shares my enthusiasm for BRMC. I can't say enough good things about their debut album, Baby 81 or Beat the Devil's Tattoo. The most overlooked under-appreciated American band of the last decade.

Baby 81 is the same level of quality as the first album. It's also their most accessible album. Take Them On On Your Own sounds too much like Oasis for me to take seriously.

If you like Baby 81 check out Beat the Devil's Tattoo. It's kind of a mix of Baby and the first one. It's catchy but also moody and quite dark at times.

Trotskilicious
08-03-2013, 01:06 AM
"most accessible" is only applicable to bands who are niche acts, not BRMC

why do you insist on using that phrase for every single band, that doesn't mean something like "best album"

here's an example of how to use it: Loaded is the Velvet Underground's most accessible album, because the songs are tightly constructed pop tunes that still utilize the VU's distinctive and pioneering sound.

here's an example of how not to use it: Thriller is Michael Jackson's most accessible album, because it's packed with popular hits.

Catherine Wheel
08-03-2013, 01:52 AM
But BRMC play shoegaze so they kind of are a niche act aren't they? I mean they also play garage rock and blues rock but shoegaze is a big part of their sound. One of the reasons BRMC never took off in America like they did in the UK is because so much of their sound is taken from late 80s / early 90s British bands.

^definitely. lyrically it's pretty weak but the music is corgan-level visionary. very of its time, yet futuristic and ethereal.

I shat all my pants when I heard the announcement for a new album at their reunion show.

This band is so great.

Waited 11 years for this second album.

Got all their b-sides/demos.

Can't fucking wait.

They've been posting videos from the studio, I think this album will be all the old tracks Som has written the past decade. One of the videos sounds like their song Cast Aspersions.

Anyone who wants to know, download their album, Finelines. Then get the b-sides album, Between the Lines. Then get a Pyrrhic Victory EP.

Kahlo

Som is full of shit, and has spent a decade living off of that first album. I hope this comes out, but until I'm listening to it I will remain doubtful.

Finelines is a great debut, but please stop comparing it to SD unless you are retardedm or also secretly listen to Silversun Pickups.

Bremang

MV have a kickstarter for their new album and reached their goal in just a few days, with a like 400 pledges, including alot of album pre-orders. They have a release date. They have videos from the studio. They are playing 4 shows in October, first tour in years. This is really their last chance to be full of shit. If they don't come through there will be an uprising amongst the fans, and they'll deport Som back to Sri Lanka. He's lived off this debut album for 12 years cause it's that good.

I do actually wonder what Som and Ravi have lived on for 10 years, surely they've had 'normal' jobs at some point? It's not like Finelines made them millionaires? I wonder what they've actually been doing..

Who knows. Ravi and the bassist chick played for Dirty Agnes on a track and at a show.
Som was backstage and in the VIP at every festival and concert on the planet. Didn't Ravi get some kind of degree?

Plus, haven't they been playing exclusively sold out shows pretty regularly, sometimes in pretty large venues? Still, I would be amazed if they could still live off of Finelines. It's pretty amazing such a large crowd still gives a shit after they've been unable to deliver for a long, long time now.

Besides, weren't they dropped from their previous label? That would imply that the first album didn't do THAT well financially.

Radiofred

They were probably dropped because they were no longer the "IN" sounding band. All those indie garage-esque bands flooded the early to mid 00's. They all had shitty guitar tones and tight jeans and leather jackets. Speaking of My Vitriol, Anyone remember King Adora? They completely ripped off SIYL with one of their songs.

The single was 'Suffocate'. That band was embarrassing.

They barely toured. Before their comeback show this year, they played a couple shows in 2009, and only a handful of show between that and their first album.

There are two versions of Finelines. The American version is a different mix. The original is way better. They only had a chance to play 5 shows in America. MTV and Napster basically died before they put out an album. Youtube and torrents weren't around yet. Their demos for the second album leaked early on. The label dropped em.

New Album was supposed to come out today. It was postponed until June 1st. Band claims a "Double Release." New Album will be out along with "The Secret Sessions"

Bremang

lol I honestly don't know at this point. I think if they didn't put something out June 1st, that will be the lowest blow the band has given to it's fan base. This is the first time they explicitly said they will have something to release at an exact date. But given their history, you would have to think they'd postpone it yet again.

Som is Corgan levels of delusional and insane

Just record shit and put it out! Fuck. They had some killer demos from around 2004 that never amounted to anything. I think they rerecorded this album like 3 times or something.

At least the quality is still there
