<a>"A lot of times when I do remixes, rather than get the artist to pay me, I work on a barter system," Moby explained. "Right now my debtors, people who owe me, are Soundgarden and the Smashing Pumpkins, I did remixes for them and they didn't pay me anything for them.

We did it with the understanding that they were supposed to do a remix for me, but unfortunately... with the Smashing Pumpkins I did a year and a half ago, and every time I see Billy I ask him where my remix is, but I can understand he's kind of busy."

Guess this means Moby is now a candidate for "news conduit" for the band.

@ pavementtune - that's what happens when you make your living remixing

Unfortunately, yes.
Although I'd guess Moby did alright in the end, financially I mean.

didn't he also make another (better?) remix that everyone liked, but then ended up not giving it to them? if i'm not mistaken, the pumpkins really hated the moby remix that ended up on the single.

i guess moby shouldn't have expected much in return if he decided to hold on to the remix everyone liked, and gave them something they hated.

i remember an interview where d'arcy expressed their disbelieve when they heard the moby remix. "what did we ever do to him?" was the general feeling.

There's an unreleased "disco" mix as well.

I think.

I dunno, but the track length matches this:

why is it that a band that relied so heavily on b-sides and extra material has such a low output of vinyl singles. i've always thought that the output of singles from MCIS-onward was just sad.

there's like, the 12" version of 1979 that has Ugly on it and that's all that's really coming to mind. super rare single from machina that has "speed kills"

i understand that electronica was getting really popular again so i can understand all the dj-oriented singles. i love those types of singles but really as a compliment to more complete ep-style singles.

yeah, there aren't that many interesting singles, i guess. if you leave out promos and singles with remixes, there isn't much left, indeed. the only ones left from mcis-adore-machina are 1979 12" and ava adore 7".
there are a couple more promos (zero, perfect, stand inside your love) with proper b-sides, but really not that much.

this is what i think was released on vinyl:
bwbw/1979 7" (jukebox)
1979 12" (+ ugly, believe, cherry)
1979 mixes 12"
zero 12" (promo, + tribute to johnny, pennies)
teitbite remixes 12"
teitbite 7" (italian jukebox, extremely rare)
teitbite fluke remixes 12" (promo)
teitbite remixes 2x12" (promo)
ava adore 7" (+ czarina)
ava adore 7" (jukebox, + czarina)
perfect 7" (jukebox, + summer)
perfect remixes 12" (uk)
perfect remixes 12" (us)
stand inside your love 12" (promo, + speed kills)

such a sad list imo. not enough variation at all. a lot of the cd singles would have made great vinyl EPs.

i always forget about that zero promo. standout of the bunch is clearly the 1979 12"

well, the tafh reissue is supposed to come out on vinyl. everyone who is a millionaire will be able to own all of mellon collie's b-sides on vinyl then.

i think the other moby remix will never be released. same with that puff daddy remix of ava adore. i don't believe they can pull that off. there's a reason they weren't released in the first place (permissions/rights/monnaie).

I'd sooner buy a Ava Adore/Czarina 7" than the 1979 12", given the option. The 12" doesn't even have Set the Ray to Jerry :(

Jimmy talks about the Moby remix in the new interview >>>

Jimmy mentioned that it took Moby forever to send it to them.
When they received the remix, they thought that he must have hated 1979.

This is the problem that I have with any remixes like the ones that Moby did. Why are they considered "remixes?" Besides sampling the distorted "ooooooooooh-dun-uh-duh" they have absolutely nothing in common with the actual song... No similar chords, structure, etc. They might be good songs in their own right (personally not my cup of tea) but as "remixes" they fucking suck. Say what you want about the Puff Daddy Ava Adore remix, at least it was a fucking remix. It had the same structure as the original and used essentially all the lyrics and anyone who listened to it (who knew what the original sounded like) would say "Hey yeah, that's Ava adore.

If you didn't know that those remixes where of 1979, would you pick that they in fact were?

Considering that the second one contained the entire first verse and chorus of the song, i'd say so. I guess when you're vegan you don't have the energy to actually finish remixes

Ha! Yeah friggin vegans. :D
Actually, I didn't listen all the way thru with the second one and you're right; I missed the bit where he samples the lyrics. Man, he couldn't even get that right - the sample is not even in sync with the rhythm of the song.

I find Moby's brand of "Im so alternative that I wear my red sweat gear with thick rimmed glasses to a music awards show" douchebaggery to be quite jarring...

honestly, as long as i've known about the remix, i wouldn't have guessed those two (or three?) were friends of any kind
