Do we have another abandoned project? The last thing I remember seeing was the storefront with a coming soon sign plastered to the windows.

Very late last year, Billy Corgan revealed he would open a 1930s-style Chinese tea house in Highland Park. Originally he planned to open in March or April, but due to construction issues it's been pushed back. Now, Corgan aims to open Madame ZuZu's in about six weeks, just in time for the start of the Ravinia festival season.

That's the most recent news I can find about it and that was in April.

According to a tweet by Chicago area photographer Paul Elledge, Billy Corgan’s Highland Park teahouse, Madame Zuzu’s, is set to open on September 13. Elledge has photographed the band multiple times over the years, including recent promotional shots for Oceania. Corgan sat for Elledge again today on location at Madame Zuzu’s. UPDATE: Smashing Pumpkins friend site Crestfallen.com says Billy Corgan plans to perform on piano for Madame Zuzu’s opening.

Yeah I don't know about this place exactly having a "teahouse" vibe either. But it looks like a cool diner. In all seriousness, though, I do wonder who he will be entrusting to run this place? I wonder about his business acumen when it comes to things like this, and if employees will be treated like shit or not. Or the type of people who will show up and if it's because they actually give a fuck about who Billy is.

<img src="http://chicago.eater.com/uploads/Madame-Zuzu-090712.jpg" width=800>

While he had hoped to open his suburban tea house in the spring and then again in early summer, even Billy Corgan couldn't avoid construction issues. But now that it's moving into fall, the Smashing Pumpkins' rocker is finally ready to open the doors to Madame ZuZu's next Thursday, Sept. 13.

Corgan told Eater that he's "relieved" the 1930s-style 30-seat Chinese tea house, set inside the former U.S. Post Office station in the Ravinia neighborhood, is finally opening. Back in December, Corgan told Eater that he wanted to create a cool space for 30- and 40-somethings to gather and exchange ideas. But now, he said, they're getting incredible response from the neighborhood. "It's so much better than I could have hoped for," Corgan said. "It's people of all ages, even seven year olds are telling me they want to come to the tea shop."

The space was completely renovated and now features a long dark wood bar, black-and-white flooring, metal plating on the ceiling, red walls, deco lighting and a piano. He previously mentioned they'll open up the space for people to display art, host talks, do live performances and more, but they're focusing on getting the tea side of the business up and running first.

"We didn't want to try and do too much too fast," he said. "We want to focus on the quality of the experience instead of having a three-ring circus all at once. Once we open [things] up, we won't have any shortage of people who will want to play or show their art."

On the menu, Madame ZuZu's will have a rotating roster of about 12 different types of loose leaf tea from all over the world, including Morocco, Japan, China and India. They'll likely always have three types each of green, white and black and some other flavors, according to Sharon Mackin-Norberg, Corgan's partner in the tea shop who also owns Ravinia Wine Shop across the street.

Mackin-Norberg added they'll have pour-over coffee from Intelligentsia and a rotating selection of vegan desserts, like pies, tortes and cookies, from Highwood's Bent Fork Bakery. They won't serve alcohol (you'll have to pop across the street for wine), but they will have Wi-Fi. Madame Zuzu's will be open Monday through Thursday 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. and until 10 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. They're still setting Sunday's hours, but likely from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.

As a special opening day treat next Thursday, Corgan will do some acoustic sets. The performances will be very casual and he isn't scheduling any set times—so if you're a diehard Corgan or Pumpkins fan, you may have to camp out and drink a lot of tea. Isn't that what the space is for anyway?

It looks and sounds pretty good. I'd check it out. It might end up feeling a bit too sterile and faceless for me, I like my tea place because of the owner more than anything. I hope he gets some people in there that know a lot about tea and are passionate about it.

Still a bit iffy about the concept of great tea and sweet vegan snacks. But maybe I could be persuaded. And I'm a bit iffy about the tea coming from so many different places...yeah. I hope somebody who really enjoys tea from netphoria will go along and post a review.

I've hardly had any Japanese or Indian tea and not a lot from China, compared to the amount I've had from Sri Lanka. But whatever.

I think when you spread yourself too thin things suffer. Tea from those different places are very different. I would expect them to be prepared and poured differently. And food as well, I mean they're ordering it in fon somewhere else. I hate that. To me the less a place is trying to do, the more likely it is to succeed at what it does.

Actually that may come down to the technicalities of permitting. In many localities there are technical differences between what is considered a "kitchen," what can be defined as a "restaurant," "preparation" of food, etc. By preparing food off-site you are also avoiding a whole new level of hassle - there's a lot more shit you have to deal with if you are classified as a restaurant.

i've learned how to use coupons so that i can afford to eat fresh food

all of my shampoo, conditioner, razors, toothpaste, etc i get for free with very few exceptions. mostly at CVS

then there's this site iheartpublix.com that tells you exactly what coupons are where that are good for the sale the upcoming week at publix. i frequently get 60-70$ worth of groceries for like, $15 max. and thats healthy stuff. if you want to eat fruity pebbles and pop tarts you can basically eat for nothing

like if i really want to next week i could get 20 6oz jars of almonds for less than $10 with about 20 minutes of work. but thats a lot for one person so i probably will just get 4 or 6. i dont like having too too much stuff.

this allows me to donate a shit ton of health and bath stuff as well, and give it to my family etc

recently i got thirty big rolls of scott paper towels for 7something. which im thinking will last me about a year

well it was really 60 rolls for 14 something but i split it with my sister because why not

I guess you didn't grow up watching your countrymen play cricket against both nations so have less appreciation for their separateness. My current doctor is originally from Sri Lanka; if you like, I'll ask him whether he considers his homeland "geographically part of India" and whether he thinks that Sri Lankan tea is actually Indian tea.

Sure, it was a generalization but you can't deny that those 3 countries are 3 of the top 5 or so in the world biggest exporters of tea, just at a guess? So while it may not be true for you, it's true in a general sense. Yes, Sri Lanka is in that top 5 too, in my head I kind of lumped it in with India because they produce similar tea to India compared to Chinese and Japanese (it's actually a different camellia plant).

Oh, and I didn't call you an idiot, I asked if you were stupid but that was just because I was in a shit mood. My bad, sorry.

I suspect it would be really tedious to learn ifhe began playing as an adult but it would be nice to be proven wrong. I'd actually rather hear him play Beethoven and thatwould be easier to learn.

I've been saying that for years. Imagine Billy solo doing the Bob Mould/J Mascis thing and playing songs from his entire catalog including Zwan.

They would probably rank as some of the most amazing performances I have ever seen, too bad he's an insane douche bag and is afraid of his own legacy out shining him somehow.

And Bob Mould:

Not sure why Billy is afraid of doing these types of shows. They also manage to play solo, form new bands, and have made up with their old bands and toured. Mascis seems to have a new project every month.

So very true... can't remember who said it on here, but somewhere between now and 2008, somebody said that the SP reunion would have been better had it included BC, an acoustic, and a wooden stool. Sometimes I still think that to be true.

Geez, people are reading way too much into this sort of thing. You all are so jaded that even when he's not being an asshole, that is what you read into his actions nonetheless. Clearly he's teasing her. One the greatest guys I've had the pleasure to know also happens to be a ruthless, aggressive teaser.

This event looked very fun. Anything that offers Billy positive and successful alternative roles in his life is a good influence on his psyche, I think. He's too caught up living in his own shadow.

No, you're missing the point. If you paid good money to attend a concert that would be one thing but in this case no guarantees, either explicit or implicit, were made about the type of performance you should have expected. If he wanted to stand up there and drunkenly fart out the tune IMO he could have very nearly gotten away with it the context of the event.

Hm. I hardly ever have to pay to see any performance, so I don't make that kind of distinction. I somehow expect every musician to give his best, no matter if it's a free/intimate/spontaneous performance or a $100 arena show. But I understand your point now, stumpycat.
