View Full Version : something to think about

I heard Call Me Maybe earlier, and took note that the orchestral bits, the violin and cello or what have you, sound like they are probably real instruments. Then I listened to I will be special K, and the strings are nauseatingly synthesized.

just something to think about

Theyre not real instruments.

redbreegull

maybe not, but it's still fucking sad that they actually sound like strings, and billy corgan is using some fisher price keyboard sounds

Call Me Maybe is more dynamic and exciting than anything on Oceania.

i think one of the orchestral instruments (the, uh, horn?) on One Diamond is real

i like retro synths. gives an ironic feel. though Everything I Want Is Free could probably have used a real string section instead of a mellotron or whatever that is

I like the synths in The Celestials, they're very MCIS

redbreegull
08-14-2012, 01:11 PM
yeah I have heard it said that there is a lot of mellotron on oceania, and that may be true, but they used the shittiest samples ever. All the synth parts sound like the preprogrammed sounds on a toy keyboard, seriously. They don't sound retro and they don't sound awesome like the MCIS synths. it sounds lazy. bad synths hurt a lot of the oceania songs. Celestials would sound SO much better if that intro was a real cello

I didn't know MCIS had any synths.

Much agreed, that would be amazing. If the first half had a Disarm-like cello throb...

those strings are totally synth pads

billy likes to use his mellotron for string sounds, MCIS and Oach.

I love the sound of melotron.

Also the start of Violet Rays is neat.

I didn't know MCIS had any synths.

Just watch all the songs that you see Jonathan Melvoin playing on in the MCIS tour.
But that's why the synths on MCIS work so well...they are basically seamless with the music.

redbreegull

The mellotrons and synths sound great on MCIS, they are overpowering and insultingly bad on Oceania. I didn't even know it was possible to make a mellotron sound as bad as that.

Lots of busy stuff going on in this song, but never would've guessed synths...guess I just always assumed it was all crazy guitar shit. What parts to listen for, for the synths in Zero?

Call me maybe I mean

I don't mind the synths. Synths are synths to me.

Actually I mean like old school air and daft punk obviously used synths much better than Billy but you know, for his music, I think his use and choice of synths is ok. Could be better arranged, like most of his music, but whatever.

TuralyonW3

i don't inherently hate any instrument or even sound really, it's all about how it's used

redbreegull
08-17-2012, 10:19 PM
maybe not, but I think his point is correct in that the synth sounds on oceania are extremely hackneyed, standard sounding synth sounds. the arrangements suck for sure, but the sounds themselves are just stupid. It honestly reminds me of the way this guy played keyboard in this band I was in when I was 15. We were listening to a lot of 80s music. Also, I remember him talking a lot about how he wished he could make the synths sound more like the postal service

BlissedandGone2

i misread the post, my bad. i thought you said that YOU wanted it to sound more like postal service. no one likes postal service.

as far as my appreciation for the synths being inexplicable, i could explain how i like the synth sounds he picked, and the arrangements, and how i think they mesh really nicely with a lot of the guitar work on the album, but since it seems that that is the exact opposite of what you're saying, i'm assuming you'll still find my point of view inexplicable despite it being subjective.

I don't mind some of the synths... They sound cool in a song like MLIW...

But yeah they do sound pretty cheesy in I wanna love you 101%. If its gonna be the single they should have at least hired a studio musician to play some real strings.
