seriously - i think losing courtney to kurt at precisely the moment when Nirvana blew up and the Pumpkins stayed in clubs is what drove billy crazy and still does. he's the woman he always wanted to marry.

songs off the top of my head abt courtney: luna, silverfuck, zero, fuck you, xyu, blank, rotten apples, in the arms of sleep, love, by starlight, muzzle, ruby, beautiful, cherry

but i agree about silverfuck begin about courtney. especially the way you see him play it in '91.

So glad I wasn't the only one who started wearing black during the Adore era.
I was infected with the black garments meme around that time too. It hasn't resolved itself, I'm afraid. :D

Sometimes I get the urge to wear a bright color such as orange but then black is just too damned good to me.

i always assumed the box underneath my bed line was the same box referred to by cobain in "heart-shaped box"

and i remember some story about billy's love letters being in the box or something? i dont remember now

but that's what makes me think silverfuck is about CL

"i'd write a letter to you...and there'd be nothing to it"

charles cross' HEAVIER THAN HEAVEN kurt bio references billy's love letters to courtney

that line from blank really makes me think about what Billy's mindset was going into MCIS. one of the other major things he was depressed about was "not having any cultural significance/not having an archetype" as spelled out by CL in the Spin 94 artist of the year issue. he was really depressed about not being iconic like kurt. hence shaved head, ZERO, pants, etc.

i mean, i think it worked for a lot of ppl - when i was growing up, Corgan was always a CLOSE second to Cobain in terms of 90s icons. Vedder was a pissant. it surprised me to learn later on that Billy didnt see himself that way, neither did a lot of people

reprise85
07-19-2012, 09:40 AM
i was too young to know before MCIS, but he definitely was after that. but he doesn't seem to get respect for it these days. none of them really do anymore, and maybe that's the way it should - then again i don't know how teenagers view them in general

i agree that vedder didn't get talked about much - i'd say chris cornell was more than vedder... and even scott weiland, for that matter

I know that Yelena was his longest relationship (or at least I think? Correct me if I'm wrong), but I thought they left off on pretty bad terms. I've heard a lot of rumors about it, like that Yelena had a spending problem with his money, she was just in it for the fame, that she liked another guy.

I heard Billy got a divorce because he was cheating on his wife...? And I thought Muzzle and Galapogos were about Chris Fabian...

As for Courtney, it seems to me that Billy's opinion of her changes like the weather. I think he still talks to Frances, but I don't know for sure

nah there's gotta be a bunch on mcis about her. they were still together the month the album came out and when he shaved his head, they actually did a radio interview together in the middle of october, and she speaks very briefly. seem on good terms on the surface, but billy met yelena in nov or dec 1995, they shot the zero vid in feb 96, so they were prolly doin it by then. maybe thats what spurred the div.

galapagos definitely, muzzle is about his fame/relaish with the press/world right?

here's a clue
you don't have to actually write about a specific person in order to write a song that seems to be directed at a specific person. and there are many different levels of a song 'being about' someone/something. i never assume a song was 100% about any specific person unless it's explicitly stated like "song for bob dylan"..or otherwise obvious. as far as sp, the song "love" always seemed like it was at least somewhat inspired by CL

Billy normally doesn't reveal who or what the direct inspiration behind a song is. Crush, Soma, Mayonaise, 33, and Muzzle are just some songs where he did say was for or about his ex-wife or marriage. Mellon Collie is filled with songs about a dissolving relationship and infidelities, and it makes sense that a lot of those songs dealt with the ending of his marriage and overall relationship with her. There are definitely some songs about Courtney on there too. Adore probably has a couple of songs about his ex-wife too. Billy has mentioned Blank Page, and Perfect is an obvious one. Other than those two on the album I couldn't guess which other ones could have been about his divorce, but he has stated that the album dealt with that.
