View Full Version : Mellon Collie w/o the "hits" vs Oceania

I know that this is a slightly dumb question, but I'm starting to feel that only real difference between SP2/3 and the old days is that Billy isn't writing any transcendent A+ material, and that's ultimately what most people want. However, he's still writing decent B+ songs. On the other hand, he isn't writing throw-aways like "We Only Come Out at Night" & "Tales of a Scorched Earth." Basically, he's losing all his highs and lows (ain't it funny how the .... ehhh sorry).

Imagine if Mellon Collie didn't have the handful of songs that are generally regarded as the "hits." Is Mellon Collie still significantly better than Oceania? I'd still say yes, just based on the variety of material and ambition, but not by that much. Mellon Collie was pretty uneven at times.

1. "Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness" 2:52
-
3. "Jellybelly" 3:01
-
5. "Here Is No Why" 3:45
-
7. "To Forgive" 4:17
8. "Fuck You (An Ode to No One)" 4:51
9. "Love" 4:21
10. "Cupid de Locke" 2:50
11. "Galapogos" 4:47
-
13. "Porcelina of the Vast Oceans" 9:21
14. "Take Me Down" Iha 2:52

1. "Where Boys Fear to Tread" 4:22
2. "Bodies" 4:12
-
4. "In the Arms of Sleep" 4:12
-
6. "Tales of a Scorched Earth" 3:46
7. "Thru the Eyes of Ruby" 7:38
8. "Stumbleine" 2:54
9. "X.Y.U." 7:07
10. "We Only Come Out at Night" 4:05

No, not really. That's what makes MCIS such a great album: all 28 songs are strong songs. The ones you are singling out like WOCOAN and Tales aren't poor, they're more idiosyncratic.

I'd say you are still in the causal-fan stage here. I'd recommend to avoid starting any new threads or contributing to any conversation.

stupid question indeed. i think oceania is an okay album, but in 5/10 years time, i can only see like 2 or 3 songs on there that i'll still be playing from time to time. mcis i'll happily listen to the whole way through 16 years after i first heard it.

I don't even like the "hits" a great deal, except sometimes in isolation.

the guitar solo in Here is No Why is more powerful than all of Oceania combined

I'm really happy seing people preferimg MCIS so much over Oceania.
I got truly scared when loads of people here in netphoria gave 4/5 to Oceania when it came out.

I personally almost had forgotten Oceania exists.

And for the record: Lillly and We only come out at night are amazing songs, not Oceania almost OK songs.

lol seriously, spiral you need to invest yourself in some things that actually make a difference in the world or something

I would like to change the weekend to 3 days instead of 2 but the the capitalism is too strong nowadays, it is practically impossible to make it happen!

I am tired of listen people at Sunday complaining 'oh shit tomorrow is Monday, I hate this', at Monday: 'oh God I hate Mondays, the weekend was so short' and at the rest of the week: 'damm never It's Saturday again!'.

Actually indeed I am doing my own project of life and test my luck! ;)
